Why is there such a huge miss to hit rate with heavier music?

To be honest I think this statement is true whatever type of music you're talking about. Vast deserts of mediocrity with just the occasional oasis of brilliance at which to slake your thirst.

  2.
I got two independent texts almost simultaneously saying "Your job is safe"

A second text from the drummer merely said "Shambolic"
This would be the point where I'd tell them to stick the band up their arses & let them come begging..... :)

  3.
They may have crept up a bit in price recently, but that has to be as a result of their reputation.
It's got more to do with the exchange rates than anything else, though they are great instruments.
Totally disagree with this - if it is a custom instrument then yes, it should be built to be exactly what you want (providing your luthier knows what you want). But a boutique bass I see as being more like a high end car. You get one because it does what it does, not so you can change it to do something you think it ought to be able to do.
Absolutely.

It's one of my favourite Yes albums. Absolutely brilliant & contains some of Squires best bass work ever.

That's what i thought of too.
That's the one, thanks guys. :)
(I was listening to "Far beyond driven" earlier today too - my brain is rubbish).

  7. I've used straplocks ever since my brand new custom built Jaydee came off the strap and smashed headstock first into the floor - I'd just picked it up from the shop & had been playing it for about 20 minutes when it happened. :)
Luckily the bass was undamaged, which was more than could be said for my underpants.....

I use the Dunlop & the Schaller ones - I prefer the Schaller models as they're not as big & clunky as the Dunlop ones.
Lots of guitars & basses come with the Dunlop compatible buttons as standard - Hamer & Musicman are the two that spring immediately to mind.

For the small amount they cost using a straplock system of some type is a no brainer IMO.
