    This is a great (i.e. essential!!!) resource for anyone playing bass in the UK.

    The natives are very friendly, :) so just pitch in anytime you feel like it.

    There used to be a great site called OLGA where people could post bass tabs but it got shopped.

    Active bass is good for lessons and midi samples. They have a whole section on funk lines.

  6. Fickle as we all are I've fallen out of love with my MIA P Bass since my Stingray arrived so she needs a new home.

    Serial number is N7271139 which makes it a 97 according to the Fender Website. Someone out there may be able to spot a reissue here, but to me its a US Standard (no S1 switching), through body stringing. Maple neck and fingerboard.

    Have to disclose that when I first got this (about 4 years ago) I couldn't get on with the lack of thumbrest so I glued a couple on to the pearloid scratchplate (yeah I know :) ). They are gone now but the glue marks remain (see pic). Would probably look better with a bit of light sanding and polishing though. Apart from that it has a couple of tiny dings at the top of the headstock.

    Can't find the exact colour on the Fender Website. Its a darkish red. I thought it was Candy Apple but its darker than that.

    Comes with Fender Hardshell Moulded case, Fender Truss Rod, Manual and Tag.

    I'm in Esher in darkest Surrey. Never sent a guitar through the post before so not sure how all that works. Would prefer pickup from Esher, or I will drive out to meet half way up to 30 minutes from home. Looking for £500.

    Like you I played when I was a kid and then stopped for about ten years for work/marriage/kids/house etc. I guess I missed out on a lot of playing and gigging experience over ten years, but I came back to the bass with a different understanding of the instrument and its role. For example I spend a lot of time trying to get the tone right rather than practicing a bunch of slap riffs designed to impress. You get older and your perspective changes I guess.

    Plenty for me to think about here. Thanks for chipping in on this.

    Jakebass ... especially like that concept that the kick is the front point of the bass note.....

    I played with a drummer for a couple of years who tended to slow up on the the tempo as the song progressed, so I got into the bad habit of playing in front of him to drag him along instead of trying to fix the problem at source. I've since left that band and hooked up with a funk trio....... but I still have this tendency to get ahead of the beat.

    I guess I have to work on the idea that tempo setting is the drummer's role ... not mine.

    I keep hearing about our duty to 'lock in with the kick'. What does this mean? Surely its not to try to play on each kick. That's impossible knowing the drummers I play with.

    Playing quarters under the kick beats is downright dull and they might as well run some keyboard loops and let you go to the bar.

    I'm thinking its to lock in on the [i]predominant [/i]beat in the bar (e.g. the 1 for funk). Is this what they mean?

    What really p***es me off is when the Guitarist tells you to 'lock in with the kick' .... but then they can't explain what that means.

    What am I missing? Please enlighten me.

    You've come to the right place if you are starting out. Lots of diamond geezers and geezerettes to help you on your journey.

    The thing I love about bass is that you can get great enjoyment from it without having to be an accomplished instrumentalist. I've been playing for 20 years and I'm a stunningly average player. I love just playing around three root notes and concentrating on getting the groove right. Suggest you get your funk CDs out and go for it (fewest chord changes of any music I can think of).

  11. I have that rig ... ITS THE DOGS ...!

    Had to put some heavy duty castors on mine to save my spine but deffo worth humping around.

    Does anyone know if it makes any difference which input you use at the back of the XL cab. I don't see any info. at the back so I just plug into either jack. Can't really tell any difference in sound/tone/power.
