4. Just to re-ignite this thread again,

I received all of the parts and Wayne is sending me the body this week so once I have it with me I'll put the bass together and then do the official handover. Once again guys and girls, thank you very much for all your help with getting all the kit sorted out for Vicky, I think she doesn't believe in people anymore but all of us here on basschat are about to change that feeling.

Cheers
Jack

5. I got the fisrt bits today so it's all goin well,

Paul if you have a nut it would be really appreciated as this is the only bit missing so far,

The build will be documented on here and I have a little plan on the headstock decal as well but this will be soon revealed, the plan for the body is a sort of blue/purple burst which are Vicky's favourite colours!

Cheers
Jack

6. Guys and Girls,

Thank you all very much, so far I have everything offered apart of a nut and it's truly amazing. Once I have everything ready and deliver the bass I will show Vicky this thread so she can see how great you are, I can pretty much guarantee she'll be crying from happiness and disbelief that so many people are willing to help. This is really great :)

Thank you all again
Jack

7. Hi Guys and Girls,

I have spoken with Ped about posting this and he has agreed to it so here it comes...

I have a friend Vicky who I consider my best friend and I love her to bits because of that. Unfortunately she recently has left her husband who pretty much took everything from her including all her bass gear and I just can't stand watching her not having anything to practice on so I had a look around and I have a 4 string P-body and neck that I will happily give to her but I'm missing the following bits to make the bass playable :

Nut
Pickups (Precision bass)
Bridge
Knobs+Jack socket
Pickguard
Strap Buttons

So I wanted to ask fellow basschatters if they have any of the above parts knocking about that they don't need and could donate to a good cause as I'm sure Vicky would apreciate it and she would finally have something to put her mind to rather than thinking about her recent issues.

I'm not going to ask for money as it's not needed, but if people would offer it I would rather it go to one of the mods who can then buy the parts and send them to me.

I normally wouldn't ask for this sort of thing if I had the money to buy those things but I'm struggling a bit myself at the moment so any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Jack

8. Well most manufacturers (big companies) will buy in bulk and have stuff custom made to their spec, the smaller boutique builders will use what the market has or at a push go for custom to be 'different''. The US also has a much better supply of things like that in general, even when it comes to painted rectangular enclosures they have so many more options available...

9. Will this do :

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1681

Or this :

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1694

10. Anyone know where I can get these in UK > http://www.reliablehardware.com/mediumrece...usingblack.aspx

And also this is the sort of wire mesh I'm looking for but can't find anywhere :)

11. Right, thanks for the input peeps, I think I finally have it nailed as to what I want :)

2x12'' cab with those speakers http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/pair-...ker-p-1069.html

Size of the cab : 75 x 40 x 35 cm - almost identical to Barefaced SuperTwelve

Covered in red tolex

Now things I still have problems with :

1. Still can't find the grill, I want the big one that will cover the whole cab as opposed to the round one just for the speakers, if anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly apreciate it.

2. I would like to put the cab on wheels so my question is : Does it matter if the main orientation of the speakers is horizontal or vertical ? I would ideally like to have it vertical, it just looks cool that way.

3. I will do a open back so do I use any sort of foam lining inside the cab or is it pointless ? Also is it a good idea to attach the grill to the back where the gap is to protect the speakers from possible damage etc ?

4. Birch Ply is apparently the best but what thickness ? Is 12mm enough or should I go for 15mm?

5. Is it possible to wire some sort of a switch into the cab to swap between the speakers being wired in series or parrallel ? To have the option of either 4 or 8 Ohm ?

I'm sure I'll have loads more questions on the way so I'll post them as I go along and once again thanks to everyone who contributed so far to my attempt at building a cab with complete lack of any knowledge

Cheers

12. No it isn't for acoustic, basically I like the sound of this speaker, the tweeter is probably overkill but I just thought why not? Guitars are really not my thing so the only thing I have for this cab is to be small and lightweight...rest is in the process of looking for the right thing!

13. Right, had a look at the eminence website and I think I'll go for these :

http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/emine...aker-p-889.html

+

http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/emine...over-p-834.html

All of it for about £110 which isn't bad.

Few questions, where on earth can I find some nice material to cover the cab ? I'm after some funky bright colours and also where can I buy the speaker grills, I want the sort of wire mesh that covers the whole front, preferably in Funky colours as well, I could paint probably so this is an option :)

14.
A single 12" in an open back cab? Unless it's acoustic guitar amp, I wouldn't worry about having a two way driver system or anything like that.

Pick a driver, build a cab, barely has to be larger than the driver itself even, and job done.
What would be the difference between open back and closed? Is it really just that simple?

Cheers
Jack

15. Hi Guys,

Do you have any recommendations on building a DIY guitar cab ? It has to be small and lightweight a preferably just 2 speakers like 15'' and 6'' or 12'' and 6''. I know it's completely different kettle of fish when it comes to guitar cabs but any pointer will be greatly appreciated. For the record I did have a look at BFM design but it's too bulky so something smaller will be desirable.

Cheers
Jack
