1. All,

I recently put some Spirocore Lights on my DB (following suggestions in an earlier thread). I really like them and now of course I fancy a set on my NS CR4 EUB (currently fitted with the NS/D'Addario "traditional" strings). Thing is though I wonder if they'll fit in terms of their length. I've a feeling I need to buy 4/4 length. Before I whip one off the double bass and try it on the EUB, has anybody else been down this route?

    It's a genuine inspiration. Seriously.

That's really kind of you. I'm very lucky to be in a band fronted by a really great songwriter and with a bunch of talented, sensitive and almost entirely ego-free musicians (all of whom are young enough to be my kids :-).

Whale song is epic, well done all of you! Is that a posted price?
Yes Tom, could well be the posted price. Depends on where I'm posting too, but as I say in the OP, I'm basically open to offers.

I've never really got on with VVT.

I like to keep a little volume back on the bass to quickly dial in during parts where the guitarist gets over excited and that's not really possible on a VVT without changing the tone.

It's fine for "set and forget" stuff but if you need to make adjustments on the fly it's not really the ideal setup IMO.

    Exactly!

  4. I've just bought myself a lovely Squire VM PJ Precision (Lake Placid Blue now you asked), but as ever, I don't really get on with Vol/Vol/Tone. I'd much prefer Vol/Blend/Tone.

I'd be perfectly able to do a mod, but I could do with a circuit diagram and some pot suggestions. Anybody know where I'd find such a thing?

just found this - you've an orange one too! https://www.youtube....h?v=xR8I0uSSpFI

LOL. No, I swapped the fretless neck over to the blue one. I'm keeping the orange BEX4 as the fretted one.

Thanks for the comments about the band. I'm 'just' the bass player - Ben, the singer/guitarist, writes all the songs. He's not half bad at it too. Lots more here: www.thegalleons.com and on Spotify etc.

  6. Just to tidy this loose end, I went with a slightly used set of Spirocore Lights. They're great, just what I wanted. Only snag is that I now want a set for my NS Design EUB.

  7. You don't see many of these. In fact you almost certainly won't see another...

This is a reluctant sale 'cause it's a unique and fabulous instrument, but a long hard look at what I've got and what I need means this one should probably go (and I'll almost certainly regret it).

Anyway, it's a Yamaha BEX 4 with a fretless conversion by ex-Brighton luthier Paul Aguilera (http://www.bbc.co.uk...laguilera.shtml). Paul didn't just pull the frets out, he replaced the fingerboard with a lovely piece of dense ebony (no problem with round wounds). The neck got a new truss rod at the same time and there's white side dots at "fret" positions (3, 5, 7, 9, 12, etc.). The bass plays beautifully and with the currently fitted LaBella White Nylons sounds completely unique. It's well up in the mix on this:

For those that don't know, the BEX 4, it's a semi-acoustic, 34" scale with piezo and mag pickups. One of the best inexpensive basses that Yamaha don't make anymore I reckon. There's a volume and pickup blend control on the front, and there's a side-mounted three-band EQ control. Being Yamaha, the build quality is very good and the bass is in great condition. The only real blemish is some slight marking in the finish on the front.

I've priced it as a ball-park really 'cause I don't honestly know what it's worth. So make me an offer (bearing in mind of course that, as I don't really need to sell, I'd be mad to let it go for peanuts). I'm potentially open to trades and happy to ship to UK or Europe.

    Here's a bunch of pictures:

    Price drop edit: £375

  8. Custom World Guitars don't have anything fretless at the moment as far as I know. I've been after a maple 'board fretless for ages. They told me they're not likely to stock them again. Didn't realise their necks came via Eyeparts (http://www.eyguitarmusic.com). Wonder where they buy from?

  9. The problem I've experienced with Squire tuners is not that they don't basically work, it's that the pressed steel lollipop bits are not fixed particularly well in the shaft, so they rattle. I put a set of Wilkinsons on one Squire. New screw holes were needed but the old screw holes were hidden.
