Yup, £300 is a bargain for a Peavey rig of that power (as long as there's nothing wrong with it!). I used Peavey stuff for years in my pub rock band and it always did the job for me. I only moved away from Peavey when I discovered Bassworld, had an attack of GAS and decided to become an 'amp snob'!!

+1 on the advice to spend money on a decent bass to play through it. A Stingray or decent Fender through a Peavey will sound a lot bbetter than a cheaper bass through a more expensive amp.

I think Ric 8 string basses were strung the opposite way round. Not many of them about though.....

That's a really neat job. I like the way you've got the grille mounted at the front of the cab - how did you attach it to the sloping horn?

The mark I Fender Urge basses (Stu Hamm signature) were 32" scale. They turn up occasionally on Ebay. If you do see one, make sure it isn't a mark II Urge which were 34".

The dealer should be able to order the whatever colour and neck options you want. Either the distributor will have one in stock or they can assemble one from stock items, or failing that they can order it from the factory. Mine took about four weeks to arrive from the US, which I thought was worth it to get exactly what I wanted.

Colour wise, my favourite Sterlings are electric blue with black plate, white with black plate, honeyburst with black plate or transparent teal with white plate. I also really like the black onyx one, but they were a special edition and probably a bit hard to find.

I don't want to add to your dilemma, but have you thought about the H, H/H & H/S pickup options?

I tried doing that using an ultrasonic water bath - it cleaned the strings up lovely but the ultrasonic vibration had the same effect as ten years of playing - they were dead as roadkill. Jamerson probably would have liked them though.

I've put EMG pickups and EQ on one of my basses running on 18v. It certainly seems to have boosted the output - it's now on a par with my 9v MM Sterling!

The first one looks like the results of crossing a Warwick with a MM Bongo.

I use a capo on a couple of songs that use chords or drone strings under a moving bass line - that's proably what the Kasabian bloke is using it for.

Was the 4005 the semi acoustic one? I seem to remember Mani's splattered one had a slash shaped soundhole.

I've used a bass string to clear the drain hole at the back of the fridge.

I always wondered why there wasn't some sort of recycling facility for steel - maybe it's not cost effective.

I bought a SB301 in 1993 (I think it's a '91 model) for £400 and still have it, though now it's got EMG pups and electronics.

I don't know if I'm adding anything new to what's already been written, but from what I can remember of the original Bass Collection basses imported by the Bass Centre, there were three ranges over the years - the SB300, SB310 and finally the SB320 range, each range an 'update' from the previous one. They also had a couple of very nice Jazz copies which were pretty expensive and by all accounts really nice to play - I'd be all over one like a shot if I ever found one.

The 300 range had something like 6 models: a passive 4 string, an active 4 string, active 4 string with an ebony board and brass nut, a 5 string and a high end mahogany bodied, maple topped 4 string. There was another maple capped bass but I can't remember what the core wood was. 4 stringers were P/J, the 5s were J/J configuration.

The 310 range was very similar and may have just removed the passive base model. I think they had slightly different hardware too.

The 320 range dropped the ash bodies for sen maple and see through colours with gold hardware. I think by this stage there were just the 4 and 5 string models (320 and 325 probably) but I could be wrong.

I don't recall there being a 330 model but Bassist magazine ran a competition to design the new range so that could have been the 330 range. I've no idea if it ever went into production before the company went bust.

As for name users, there was Shakespeare's Sister's bassist (Clare somebody?) as already mentioned, Culture Club's bassist, Nick Fyffe and Chris Wolstenholme from Muse.

Don't panic chaps - I was already swinging towards 2x12s and I just wanted to know if anyone had anything good or bad to say about the Nemesis cab in particular. TBH, I'm not particularly demanding about cabs - most of the ones I've owned have been perfectly good (except for 4x10s, just don't seem to like 'em) and also, in my experience, playing through a cab in a shop bears little resemblance to what it'll sound like when the drummer kicks in.

I started out on bass guitar (about 19 years ago..). At the beginning of this year I was looking for a new fretless bass and came across an ad on Bassworld selling an electric upright. I'd always liked the BD playing of people like Danny Thompson and Ali Friend (Beth Orton & Red Snapper) so I thought 'I'll have that instead'. Been having a whale of a time ever since.

Has anyone tried the Nemesis NSP212?

I've had enough of lugging my Hartke 210 and 115 up four flights of stairs so I'm going to go lightweight.
I'm not mad about 410s, a single 15 is a bit too bassy, a 210 isn't bassy enough so is a 212 the happy medium?
