1. Hi Mike.

On the back of the SWB there's a threaded hole which is the right size for a camera tripod. I picked up a cheap one which is sturdy enough to stop it toppling over. Having said that, I've done plenty if gigs where I've forgotten the stand and just wedged it into a corner out the way and not had any disasters so far.

(Maybe I should have started a proper thread and not hijacked this poor guy's intro)
Yeah - sorry about that.

A proper South West bass bash would be great if 'someone' can find a bass friendly venue and we have enough confirmed attendees to pay for the bugger. Any ideas?

:) Class!! There's nothing like a fretless bass, dark stage and a crap foldback mix to help you fill you trousers.

++1 - which will go a very long way to avoiding the point above.

There's some gems coming up here. Good work guys!

  4.
Talking of which what happened to the idea of a Bristol/Bath/Somerset meet?
It never got past the idea stage - nobody seemed willing to organise anything.

If we're just talking about meeting for a beer then it shouldn't be too difficult. Anyone in Brizzle fancy a bass related pint?

  5. Why are people suddenly unloading their Sterlings? There seems to have been a rash of them up for sale recently.

I reckon you're all f#@*ing mental, I'll give up my Sterling when you prise it from my cold, dead hands.

  6.
Hi Rev

Thanks matey, like you said, more space less notes, I find myself mostly playing roots or 5th above or under, and the impact comes from the feel of the note and when it's played.

    What EUB are you playing?
It's an Aria SWB Lite. I don't think it sounds terribly close to a proper DB but with a DB playing technique (or as close as I can get!!) it's definitley passable. Plus it fits in my car!

TBH, when I bought it I was actually looking for a new fretless but it popped up on the for sale forum on Bassworld and I thought 'what the hell'.

  7. Nice one Sub!
I've only been playing upright for about 8 months but I've found you can do a lot with one note, a slide and a bit of vibrato!

I wouldn't worry about your stickers. my EUB has dots at the harmonic points and I'm happy to admit I'd be lost without them. Anyway, no-one else can see them but me....

  8.
Well after an interesting visit to my LGS today during my lunch break, he's given me a really good price on the Aria SWB so Im going for that!!
Good choice sir.

I've only had mine for about six months and I'm loving every minute of it. It's a bit like learning to play all over again but already knowing what you're supposed to be doing.

I'm also playing more gigs and sessions than you can shake a stick at - there's something about upright bass that makes people take notice. Sweet.

  9. The Stagg looks like a copy (licenced??) of the Aria SWB Lite - probably made in China which is why it's so stupidly cheap.

I've got an Aria Swb Lite and I'm pretty happy with it. Although I can see myself wanting to upgrade in a few years time.

I've no idea what the quality of Stagg stuff is - it seems good quality for the price but without trying it first there's really no way of knowing.

Generally you get what you pay for so if you've got £700 to spend on an EUB, then that's what I'd do. Spending £300 may be a false economy.

  10. I didn't hear a basss line and decide to be a bassist - I wanted to play rock music and everyone and their dog was a guitarist.

The first bass line I learnt was Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC.

The first bass line I heard that made me sit up and take notice was probably Badge by Cream.

  11. £750??

You got a real bargain there, mate.

Funny you should mention an end to GAS - I bought my Sterling in 2000 and it's totally ruined me for other basses, they just have no effect on me.

I'd quite like a fetless one though :)

  12.
"everybody here wants you" - jeff buckley. not sure who the bass player was...might have been jeff, but it's a stunning bassline.

simple and effective, and responsible for the key change after the middle 8.

if i am ever having trouble improvising a slow groove i actually try to emulate the feel of this bassline. it works a treat. i got a huge ovation once in scruffy murphys in watford after shoe-horning this bassline into some horrible cover we were doing.

one of the greatest songs ever written as well.

if you disagree, then well you're wrong. :)
Jeff's bass player was Mick Grondahl. I love his playing, especially the bass line ot Last Goodbye - the double stops in the chorus are just perfectly placed. Beautiful.
