Wow that's beautiful

Wonderful thanks!

Well that's exactly what prompted the search. I was discussing using an electric upright, but the affordable ones all look terrible. My other half suggested getting a 'real' bass instead; id always assumed that would be off the cards due to space. Result! 😎
The only other worry is that my usual practice time is after the kids have gone to bed. We'll have to see how that goes.

I reckon it’s best to start out on a proper acoustic upright if you can. The shape of the body is such a huge part of learning the muscle memory
That's what I've been reading. I also really like the feel of the sound against the body. I guess you don't get that on an eub!
Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. I'm now refreshing every marketplace I can find constantly hoping for an affordable jewel to show up. 😁

Well I'm no way as handy (or patient) as you @The Guitar Weasel your restoration has been really impressive to read!

Yes I think you're right.
Had a really good chat with bassbags who were very encouraging and would make everything easy. They would give me a call if their van was heading to Scotland, but even with shared travel costs it's going to be pricey.
I'll keep my eyes out for a beater bass in the meantime to get started.

Cheers, that's what I feared.
I was going to call them tomorrow to see what the deal is anyway.

Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of dipping my toes in to DB. Mainly to play in a first wave ska band, but I'm also interested in getting some lessons on jazz and rebuilding some classical knowledge.
I was wondering if anyone has advice about renting a bass in the first instance before taking the plunge with a purchase. Is that worthwhile approach? I was just having a look at the bassbags website, not sure if they would be able to deliver up to Glasgow from Derbyshire?
Other options are keeping an eye on the classifieds and eBay for something nearby or giving a cheapy eub a go.
Jas anyone gone down the rental route?

Would consider trades for a medium or short scale something, or a EUB.
What do you have?

Price drop to £375?

As someone asked I realised I hadn't included this info in the ad:
String Spacing is 17mm and weight is 4.2kg on the bathroom scales.

Excuse the blatant promotion, I have a nice cort b5 artisan in the for sale section. It was my first 5 string and was a good intro.
Ergonomically it's brilliant. It fits my body well and balances perfectly. Much less awkward than a jazz me.
I've tried to sell it a few times and make the mistake of playing it before sending it off.
I'm only selling it as I'm totally skint at the moment and it doesn't really suit my retro band.
Let me know if you want more info.

Sold an Ashdown grail short scale to Benedict.
Great buyer, lots of good questions and turned out we ok new each other IRL from years back.
Cheers

Have wanted one of these for ages (in this colour), they only seem to come up when I'm skint!

It's a hard line - every not counts, and terrific fun.
Here, a version with the "weww-weww-weww" slides. I think that I am ready to try that extra bit, having learned the line a few years back.
Had to give this a go last night. Lots of fun!

Hi everyone,
Just wondered what approaches you have when the tempo starts to drag unexpectedly.
We currently have one or two songs in our ska band that occasionally slip. I try to push the beat with a hope to pick it back up to tempo, but this can mess with the feel.
What do you do?
Thanks

Yes happy to ship this. Have just ordered a couple of shipping boxes.
Will always pack securely!

*Price drop £375.*
Including shipping.
Would trade for a barefaced one 10 or two10 with appropriate money your way.
I've tried to sell this a few times and changed my mind... But it has to go now!
Really beautiful burgundy red colour on an open pore swamp ash body. Resonant, light and nicely balanced.
5 piece walnut and panga panga neck and roasted maple fretboard.
Bartolini mk 1 pickups with markbass preamp.
Any questions let me know.
Cheers

Enhanced pic from our gig on Saturday: Warwick star bass fretless > tuner> jhs pulp n peel comp> house peavey 300w 15" combo. Rattly, mid Focussed and loud enough on the small stage but pa support was massive adding the required weight for the ska and reggae set.
Katana perched on top for the guitarist sounded good too.

First gig with the first wave ska band the Long Shots supporting ska punk band Rudebeard.
Pretty decent turn out considering the trains were off after the storm.
We played pretty well for a debut, lots of really positive comments.
Played my Warwick star bass fretless through the rattly house peavey combo, but the sound guy did a great job.
This was my first proper gig for over 12 years so pleased it went so well.
