I just thought I’d start a general reggae thread where anything reggae or ska related can be  posted , like videos , events,  news , techniques, equipment,  anything your working on , or just about anything really 🙂

I started bass lessons when I was about 15 and was taught by a blues bassist , but I quickly found out that reggae was my passion, so I was playing blues and reggae, this was one of the first tunes I played ,

This one's called rollin. No lyrics recorded yet.

    Just that.

Since the lock down I've been playing guitar more and... I keep wishing for a Telecaster. Instead of that, I bought a PRS SE I found locally as I was missing the dual humbucker thing (I sold all my guitars except for a Stratocaster and a P90 Les Paul type).... and I still want a Tele.

I think I'll probably get a Squier Classic Vibe, but there's a few other cheaper alternatives and I'm wondering if any of them are decent. In particular the Harley Benton ones look good and people seem to like the basses. Any experiences?

Gotta be maple fingerboard, ideally lacquered/tinted, but definitely maple regardless.

    November 2020 edit:

Metallic red SX and metallic purple Classic Vibe Squier ended up being the winners... but quite a few other cool alternatives out there.

If you exclude my handwound exotic pickup choice, my Tele cost me four hundred dollars with the warmoth Tele neck. I could've went with a 51 P pickup, and totaled at less than 500, but what's the fun in that? With my pickups, it's about a grand total.

We normally get the set list on Saturday, or Friday at the earliest, with keys chords and words.  We meet around 8.45 for a 10.30 service start, so plenty of time for rehearsal, and some fellowship.  We use iPads while we are playing, so key changes aren’t a problem.

Yup, pretty much. Except with us, we get handed a three to four song list, with lyrics and chords, at 930ish on Sunday morning,, and quickly run through them once before service at 10. No heads up, no practice, no big deals.

    Hello people!

I’m keen to follow more bass stuff on YouTube. Who do you recommend?

I’m big into ‘all about the bass’ on Andertons, Scott’s Devine of Scott’s Bass Lessons is interesting to watch too, not just on the Bass Lessons front but with the interviews he does and the brand history sort of stuff - I love all that kinda thing. Adam Aarts does pretty cool gear demos, particularly of pedals to give you an idea of how it sounds on bass, which is what pushed me to buy my Walrus Audio Slö Reverb (which is nuts by the way - might do a review of that soon)

I’d quite like to find some more interview sort of stuff cause that’s always cool to watch or stuff that engages the audience somehow, like jam tracks, posting in photos whatever!

If anyone’s got any recommendations - put them on me!

    Cheers 😁

I also love all about the bass from anderton's. But I watch my own channel mostly. Seeing as how it's really just a place for me to keep track of the random misc things I come up with on the fly to expand on later, or to check my tone/new gear. Yes, I post videos for me, not you :) well...most of the time.

I really love listening to all kinds of punk but although it's fun to play I struggle to find any really interesting punk bass lines. There are a few exceptions like Rancid and some of Anti Flags ska influenced songs.

Are there any really great punk bass lines that really stand out?

Im wondering what other peoples experiences are with these two types of pickups. Im talking of Jazz type pickups of course. Every time I have a split (hum cancelling) set in a jazz bass they seem to sound a little dull. Im aware of why but my ears may be different to others.

I had an MIJ Fender jazz with a pair of single coils and it sounded amazing. Im not sure I like the hum cancelling sound of hum free Jazz pickups, they seem to lack something like the sparkle, blah blah.  Im literally about to pull the trigger on some Aguilar AG 4J 70s pickups. Everything Aguilar I've owned ive loved.  Any experience/thoughts would be welcome on these pickups or general. Any other pickups I should consider.?

BTW. The bass is a Jazz bass with pickups in the 70's position..

Splits are dull. Well, in the top end at least. They are much more full of life in all other aspects though. But, my experience is that a jazz is n I t a jazz without singles. Anything else can go any way. You can not ever get a jazz bass sound without 2 specifically placed single coil pickups.

An opportunity to play in my church band arose last week and so I jumped at the chance.

Obviously I plan to lock in with both the drummer's kick and the pianist's left hand but are there any other pointers that any church bassists can give me?

Chill. Worship music is about the lyrics. Vocals and piano rule. And the worship leader will make that very clear time and time again :) we just do our jobs. Hold it down. Nothing fancy unless it calls for it. Know what I mean?

  9. What's up guys? I'm Jeezy, I'm new here, and I've been playing for 22 years. Ampeg lover. Got quite a few basses and rigs. Play pretty much anything. In a funky rock rap reggea band right now. Calle Royale. Life's good.
