1.
Interesting, that - I'm pretty sure that's a hybrid, a Silver Series J neck on an older P body. The earlier Ibanez 2369 featured a P/J layout & block inlays but I've never seen this on an SS. The big black oversprays on the body suggest a laminated construction (probably butcher block/veneers) which I don't think an SS would have. I might be wrong, in which case this is a proper rarity - I think you should post some pics on the Ibanez Collectors forum. Is there a serial number on the neck plate? The first two numbers will be the year - although '79 would be very surprising, Ibanez stopped making copies around 1977. Jon.
I've joined up over at Ibanez Collectors, and found a link to a really good vintage Ibanez site. It doesn't look like mine is a rarity unfortunately. Same model, just a different colour. I've started a thread and posted some pics over there anyway, so thanks for the info.
2. I bow to your superior knowledge sir - this is the only Japanese Fender copy I've ever played. :-)
3. No worries, I probably shouldn't have resurrected a thread in the Marketplace as I'm actually not selling any more. Its just that Schnozzalee asked me what the serial no. was ages ago, this is a (very) belated reply to that question. Cheers.
4. I'm at work at the moment so I'll check the serial when I get home. As far as the neck goes, and assuming the necks follow a similar profile to Fender, it certainly isnt a Jazz neck profile. (its a lot fatter than any Fender Jazz I've ever played, definitly closer to a Precision type). I'll chuck some pics on that ibanez collectors forum later. Thaks for the info.
5. Bernies explanation of the harlequin effect :- "The construction of this bass is a Brazilian Mahogany core with man made veneer back and front and on the headstock. The veneer is individual dyed pieces of wood glued together and sliced at an angle which gives the Harlequin effect."
6. Correct. Unfortunately its not well liked/known enough in this country to attract a decent bid. Decided to keep it now.
7. 1979 (I think) Silver Series PJ, modded with Badass II bridge and Seymour Duncan QP pups.
8. Thread necromancy ahoy! Finally got around to checking the serial no. (only took me just over a year. I'd love to say I've been busy, but unfortunately its down to pure laziness). Serial no. is 0029.
9. Thanks Russ, thats some really interesting stuff. Finally got around to taking the neck off mine for the first time, serial no. 0029. Any ideas how early that might make it? Still with the original Hiscox Goodfellow case too. I was trying to sell it, but for some reason its not really attracted much attention in this country (unless I'm willing to near give it away). What the hell, I reckon I might just keep it.
10. Schnozalee - Bernie told me the serial number is in the neck pocket and under the pups, so I'll need to get around to whipping the strings off and taking a look. As far as the dints go, thers a couple of small chunks out of the laquer on the back of the headstock, and some minor scratching on the the lower left bout, mostly on the back, one on the front. I'll take some pics, might be hard to pick up the damage though as its not overly visible. Will get the above done at some stage during the week. Thanks for the interest.
11. Haha yeah I had to admit I did a double take when I saw the "Hi there gorgeous", after which I noticed the comma and realised Andy was referring to the bass.
12. Thanks for all the advice and bumps guys. Andy - I've already been in touch with Bernie, just to get a bit more info on the bass and to let him know how far across the world his work has travelled. He is indeed a top bloke. Thanks again everyone.
13. For sale - My original Goodfellow Harlequin, handbuilt by Bernie. Its in great condition considering its 25+ years old. A couple of minor dings, nothing major. Plays great and sounds great. To be honest I have no idea of its true value, so offers please. Selling because times are as tough here in NZ right now as they are anywhere else in the world. No idea how much it would cost to freight from here to the UK. Will look into that if anyones genuinely interested. Comes with original Goodfellow branded case, also in solid condition. Cheers
14. Cheers for the clips guys, nice one. I particular like the way the Style Council guy completely nails my tone. Despite the fact that Live Aid occurred 4 years before I started playing.
15. I emailed Bernie a little while back when I first got the bass, and was pleased to receive a response. Part of the email gives the following information :- "The construction of this bass is a Brazilian Mahogany core with man made veneer back and front and on the headstock. The veneer is individual dyed pieces of wood glued together and sliced at an angle which gives the Harlequin effect. From what I can see of the neck it is Maple and possibly Puduk laminates with an Ebony, Macassa Ebony or Rosewood fingerboard, it is hard to tell from the photograph." I've had a close look and I'm sure the fingerboard is rosewood. Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated. Glad to be part of the club!

Jake
Done! Cheers for all the welcomes guys, much appreciated.
17. Just thought I'd add my Goodfellow Harlequin to this thread. One of Bernies originals. Not as pretty as some of the more recent models, but I guess its the daddy of them all.
18.
Welcome mate good to see you here - I enjoyed my all to brief time in NZ - indeed a great country. Nice basses too - I spoke to Bernie about those finishes he did when I met him a few months back - not sure if the pic is a bit out of focus or I have had a bit too much cider, but if I keep staring at it I am sure I will start seeing a picture of a naked lady or something.
Cheers for the welcome mate. Yeah this is a fantastic place, just about every kind of scenery you could ask for from rolling fields to snowy mountains. And the weather! When Neil Finn wrote "Four Seasons in One Day" he wasn't joking... Those pics are a little out of focus, not a great camera unfortunately. I've found that staring at the finish for too long can do strange things to ones eyes, never seen any nudity as yet though. I'll give it time, and more beer. Lovely bass though.
19.
Hello from another New Zealand lover! Where in Auckland are you? My dad's in Birkenhead on the North Shore, which is strange because I live in Birkenhead on the Wirral...same place 11000 miles away...
Cheers mate, I'm on the other side of the bridge in South Auckland, Botany Downs to be precise.
20. Cheers guys, yeah all is well here. Great country.
21. Hi All, new member here. Currently resident in Auckland NZ (since 2006) but born and (in)bred in the Isle of Man. Been playing bass about 20 years, and probably should be a damn sight better than I am for the time I've been playing. I've had long layoffs from playing through the last 20 years though. Thats my excuse... Not playing in a band at the moment, still waiting for the right one to come along. Prefer to play mellow acoustic type stuff. Seems to be a lot of "rrrrock" bands in this country.... My current rig is :- Goodfellow Harlequin Bass (handmade by Bernie, early 80's) 1979 Ibanez Silver Series PJ (modded with SD QP pups and Badass II bridge) Trace Elliot GP12SMX Head SWR Goliath III 4x10 Cab Photos of the basses below, no pics of the amp at the moment. (Ibanez pic is pre-mods) I'm already a member on Talkbass, somebody mentioned this forum on there the other day so I thought I'd come check it out. Glad to be here! Cheers.
