I’ve heard reports that the earlier ones develop glitches/problems is this true?

I do hope so. Some Scrote stole mine so It would make me really happy to know that whoever it ended up with now has a dud.

Seriously though, I used a blue one for over 8 years, loved it and it was fine for the duration. However, when the insurance payout came I replaced it with a Tech21 Bass boost chorus which I feel is much better.

That's tasteful slap. Nowt wrong with that.

Think someone mentioned the extreme slap killer earlier. This is nonsense to me.

I was there. Went down from Edinburgh with a mate. We looked in on the markbass room for about 40 seconds and left in a hurry as the sound was appalling. Mind you, the sound across the whole of the excel was awful. Didn't seem to be any control over volumes. I'd recently bought some EBS NEo speakers from Bernie Goodfellow so we tried to have a chat with him and Dominique DiPiazza but it was a waste of time.  Went to see Stanley clarke at the jazz cafe in the evening and had an interesting chat with some polish bass players who despised Wojtek !  Stanley didn't seem to be in a good mood and didn't play School Days which was a bit of a disappointment.

Remember Guy does a stand up comedy act as well so has an advantage there. Guys more natural.

I went to see Guy at the fringe about ten years ago. Almost the entire show was culled from his book which was a bit disappointing - a funny story's only funny the first time. I invited him to my gig at Finnegans wake that night cos he said he was free but he didn't turn up.

  4. I have pressings of Who are You (the who) and Van Halen where the tracks aren't in the same order as the sleeve listing or any listings for said albums on the internet.  In both cases the tracks have been shunted down one so what should have been the last track is actually the first.

I one bought a slap bass instructional DVD, by Ed Friedland.

    He's very good at it.

But he admitted that he has never ever been asked to play slap bass with a band.

    And neither have I.

The DVD is still in it's plastic wrapping. :)

I bought the first edition of 'Slap it' by Tony Oppenheim in the early 80's. Standard notation only and it came with two floppy plastic 7" singles with examples - The first thing I did was copy these to Cassette cos they wouldn't have stood up to too much needle lifting.  Turned out to be the only book I ever needed to learn to slap. I worked through all the examples, became reasonably proficient and have never slapped in a band situation since.

  6. Aside from Guitar shops, the one place where I rarely hear slap played will is during the inevitable bass solo. Sure, you can see the guy's hands moving up and down the neck but the notes never seem to change - it's just a mish-mash of thumps and pops with no musicality. (granted there are a handful of well played and musical slap solos BUT not enough to make up for the Dross)

Outside of soloing and shops I have no issue with slap played well so long as it supports the song.

n.b. I have dozens of albums by Stanley, Victor, Marcus et al but they rarely get played nowadays as I've gradually lost interest in bass soloing.

    4 -It sounds better ..

One could argue that putting everything through compact PA speakers just gives the instruments an Homogenised (aka boring) sound.  Using the backline instead can give an amount of 'colour' that compact speakers can't provide.  Obviously the larger the gig the less that matters as no-one will be able to distinguish the bass anyway.

And to further cloud the issues raised by the OP, I've had a couple of thermal shutdowns that have rendered the amp DI useless so I now insist on having the Di taken from the Radial on my pedalboard.

Well, if you have active FoH, that's power to each side of the front of the stage, plus active monitors - say one each for a 4 or 5 piece band. That's quite a lot just for the PA and is additional to anything needed for individual backline, power for FX, etc, etc. If you're happy, great, but I like to keep things as simple as I can.

Well. In our case there's already power to both sides of the front of stage so plugging a couple of extra power leads in really isn't that tricky.

That said, if I'd had a say in the original set up instead of joining an existing band I'd have gone for passive speakers for the reasons given by others above i.e. resilience.

Good advice. Using passive speakers also removes the need to run mains power all over the stage.

I don't get this one. The majority of electric guitarists and an increasing number of bassists(including me) will need power at the front of stage for pedal boards anyway so providing for a couple of extra pluds shouldn't be much of a hardship. We run a 4 bar to either side which would handle the 2 PA speakers, 3 pedalboards and 3 powered monitors (although our lead guitarist/frontman usually runs his own extension from one of the others so he can plug his ipad thingy in too.

But at least his playing is instantly recognisable/distinctive.

only if you know /like his music. I never got interested in either joy division or new order so didn't get into peter hook and certainly wouldn't recognise his playing. As a few have already said, I don't particularly follow virtuoso 'solo' bassists anymore (did all that many years ago) and if I don't enjoy a band's music then I'm not going to pay particular attention to their individual instrumentalists

Holding dozens of trailers is one thing

"Sighthill depot in edinburgh is vast. It could easily hide 2 dozen trailers."

Puts a very different spin on things, I don't understand your use of the word hide, or did you mean hold?

'One could hide xxxx in there' is a commonly used figure of speech to indicate the size of something.

  12. We use Mackie SRM450s for FOH and they are great for most pubs and wedding venues you'll play.  There are a couple on gumtree in Drylaw for £400 (not mine I hasten to add).

For stage monitoring we each have a mackie thump.

Edit - The SRM450's are 500 watts RMS and 1000 watts peak  and the thumps are 400 watts RMS and 1300watts peak.

No disrespect to the jazzers and fusion virtuosos, but while they may have had the chops the music they played was and still remains niche. I mean Jaco is well known within the bass/jazz-fusion world but outside of this I doubt many would ever have heard of him.

The list is published in Bassplayer magazine. I'd hazard a guess that only bass players will ever see it so it doesn't matter that no normal person will have heard of him.

Not sure what the point of your post is. I was simply pointing out that the sighthill depot is huge. In fact your post of saturday night appears to agree - "Yes I completely agree that the large depots could hold dozens of trailers,".

  15. There'll always be someone complaining about Roto's adverts. I remember in the 80's or 90's they had one with billy sheehan suspending his attitude bass from the strings - the mags (bassist at the time IIRC) were full of letters from people saying he shouldn't be treating his bass that way.
