  1. My mate met Dave Hill in PMT Birmingham a few years ago (when he was returning his 2nd faulty Blackstar head) Dave commented on his homemade trolley for said amp.... Was a thoroughly nice bloke apparently.

When I was a kid, a couple of Showaddywady lived in our village, I used to queue up in the butchers with the singer on a Saturday morning and the guitarist lived just down the street from my mate. He was mowing his lawn once as I walked by carrying my bass, so he stopped and chatted for about 20 minutes. Both nice blokes, but I couldn't stand their records!

They do say you should never meet your heroes, but every single one of mine that I've met has been brilliant....

  2. I had a similar thing, except it wasn't the drummers fault, he was just trying to keep up with two guitarists who thought that a pair of 200w Blackstar half stacks had to be turned up to "get their sound".... I left before I went deaf.

Funnily enough I was thinking the other day (as I played through my 500w Markbass rig) how I played my first ever gig in 1977 with a 30W Selmer bass combo whilst the guitars used a 15w Carlsboro Stingray and a 50w Fal PA, which the vocals went through too. Have drum kits really got much louder than in those days? I'm guessing not, so maybe 70's watts were "real" watts after all?

    I like that idea.

It may be possible to use a couple of long strips of tough velcro to go over the stand's feet and attach to the bottom cab (it's covered in carpet), giving a bit of extra protection against bumps. Maybe?

Hmmm, I did have some self adhesive velcro strips somewhere, but I'd be worried about ruining the carpet on my brand new cab. Guess if it's only done occasionally it would take a fair while before any bobbling occurs...

Actually, I've just tried it.... It's a terrible idea! Doesn't really work as the angle is all wrong and the combo ends up too far forward and it seems very unstable. Maybe with a bigger (deeper) cab underneath it would be ok....

Yup. I bought one of them recently and I've just used mine tonight. It's perfect for an amp the size of the Markbass, although it can take something a little bigger too for sure. I think it's just elevated enough to not lose the "oomph", and you can adjust the angle. It's brilliant.

Yup, I've since bought the NY121 extension cab to go under the combo, but it's still not really that high, so I'm thinking of chopping an inch off either end end of the bottom tubes and using it to angle the combo whilst standing on top of the cab.... Not sure if it's a good idea or not, but what's the worst that could happen eh?

  5. I used to play in a band where both guitarists used 200w Blackstar half stacks, even in smallish pub gigs. Their response when I pointed out that they were way too loud was "you need to get a bigger amp" My answer to that was "why?, so we can deafen the audience as well as ourselves" I didn't hang around too long, I decided I liked listening to music too much, and wanted to be able to do so til my old age.... In my experience, the band being too loud on stage is the bane of any sound engineers life. As for the OP, a quiet, polite offer of help would probably have been ok, provided the band weren't complete knuckle-draggers...

  6. I've just heard that Bruce Rowland, the drummer with Joe Cockers Grease Band, Fairport Convention and Ronnie Lanes Slim Chance, has passed away today.

Bruce was a great drummer and by all accounts a lovely bloke. My thoughts are with his family and friends, he will be sorely missed by every Fairport fan.

This is probably his best known work, though he played countless sessions and is probably on at least one record in all our collections!

  7. As a band, rehearse, rehearse and rehearse your set til your bored with it.... Then rehearse it more... You will be sick of playing the same songs over and over, but your audience will be hearing them for the first time and will be thrilled. You will be less than thrilled if you have all made massive mistakes.... Also, show a bit of respect to any other bands/soundmen etc, it doesn't take long for word to get around if you behave like to**ers and the gig offers may dry up pretty quickly if you do.
