  1. Greetings all,

I've decided to move my Mustang bass on.

In truth, I bought it on a whim and it's been sat in its gig bag in the spare room for a couple of months. I bought it new from GAK in November and it is in as new (roadworn) condition. I've never even took it out of the house!

Comes with everything included that came to me inc unopened black scratch plate.

£780 couriered to your door. Not a bargain price I know, but it is as new.

Pics to follow later - but it looks like a roadworn JMJ Mustang 👍

Specs (in case you dont know)

    Body Material - Alder

Body Finish - Road Worn® Nitrocellulose Lacquer

    Neck Material - Maple

Neck Finish - Road Worn® Nitrocellulose Lacquer

    Neck Shape - "C" Shape

    Scale Length - 30" (762 mm)

    Fingerboard Material - Rosewood

    Fingerboard Radius - 9.5" (241 mm)

    Number of Frets - 19

    Fret Size - Medium Jumbo

    Nut Material - Synthetic Bone

    Nut Width - 1.625" (41.3 mm)

    Pickup - Custom Seymour Duncan® Split Single-Coil Mustang Bass®

    Bridge - 4-Saddle Mustang® Bass Strings-Through-Body

    Cheers

  2. Well folks if nothing else I've learnt that there is no right answer to the 'what strings for a P bass?' question.

I know that there have been some great recommendations and I really appreciate people taking the time to steer this newbie (I imagine if it wasn't for covid I'd see little response as you'd all be out gigging - every cloud and all that :laugh1:)

Anyhooo, I've ordered a cheap & cheerful set of Fender 7250M's in 45-105 gauge (as that's what the bass has been set up in) and Ill see how I get on with them.

Once again, really appreciate your comments & views :drinks:

Hi  @Bonzo it’s worth keeping an eye on the strings for sale on here, they come up fairly often, you will save some money, I’ve done the whole string thing and it can definitely work out expensive , many a night I’ve trawled the for sale section looking for a certain guage or brand 🙂

Yeah, its not like they're a fiver a pop so you experiment with loads is it?

Must say I hadnt seen that GHS video that @KeOgon posted before. That is very helpful. Maybe I should just dive in with a set of GHS flats 45-105 and take it from there. (until I wake up tomorrow morning and change my mind )

  4. Ooh, it all went a bit weird.

TheGreek did indeed ask what tone I was looking for, and I found this really difficult to answer. I then got embroiled in something else and lost the day. Apologies for asking for advice and not responding.

Well, what tone am I craving? I honestly don't know. I guess I'll know when I hear/find it.

Bands/artists I like aren't all associated  with the P bass (though some are), but I wouldn't sound like them even if I possessed the skill & creativity. I guess I just want to try and bond with the bass, plonk along, find a groove, learn some runs and enjoy myself.

I do appreciate your recommendations. Like I said earlier, there's so much choice out there it seems a bit daunting and its difficult at the moment to just go out and try stuff, hence me wanting to get a starting point and make my own opinion as I develop.

I'll absorb what you guys advise and make an informed choice from there - and let you know which way I went👍

  5. Disclaimer. I'm a newbie. Well, I've had a bass 20 odd years ago and now I'm back with a RW MIM 50's P.

Like I say, I'm gutted to be asking this but its a minefield of string options out there to the uninitiated and so I'd like someone with some experience to 'tell' me to put XYZ strings on and see where I am a few months down the line as I've got nothing to go on.

I'm probably not gonna be using a pick, and can't se me slapping if that helps, but happy to be steered and if I hate them I won't hold anyone personal 😉

    Cheers guys

  6. Howdy  folks,

Thought Id chime in and say hello.

Just got a Fender P bass (Mexican Roadworn 50's) and I'm on the prowl for a half decent practice amp for the house to get me going. Got a budget of a couple of hundred quid, so if anyone has any suggestions/recommendations?

I'm tempted by the Fender Rumble 25w. (what's the difference between the LT and the version 3?) or maybe the orange Crush. To be honest, I'm probably looking more for a clean sound (at least until I've got a bit of experience) and so the millions of effects on the LT may be lost on me. But they may not. Anyway, Hello 😊
