1. When you de-fret, is it possible to fill the holes and blend so that there's no visible line where the fret wire used to be?

It's a long story - but project 2 (which I'm not starting for a while) wants a fretless fingerboard... however, because of other (daft) modifications, the intonation/scale length is going to out and I don't want little lines on the fingerboard trying to trick my already under-powered brain in to aiming for them.

  2. What a fine fellow. Very easy to deal with, quick to ship, and not afraid of the selotape (other brands of sticky-back plastic are available) when it comes to making sure your purchase gets to you unmolested.

    Cheers Chris.

  3. Don't you hate it when the little fragments of info you've gathered just mysteriously group together over time in your brain, and you realised you've f***ed up.

The loose wire I mentioned early in the thread was presumably supposed to attach to the bridge... via the little dent/hole on the top... which I just filled. Arrrggh.

  4. Here's a question for you...

On basses like the AFB and Stylist, the bridge is quite far forward on the body... is there any reason it can't be pulled back towards the tailpiece? Obviously that would change the scale length etc.

  5.
You might be correct that it depends what you run through it - I was probably expecting too much.
I suspect you had reasonable expectations and were understandably disappointed. :) I probably expected nothing and was surprised that it seemed to do a decent job of a Chas 'n' Dave tune. :)

If memory serves, it can take a bit of work to whittle down the output from DMM into a decent chord chart since I think it identifies waaaay too many chords in a sequence. But you never know, might help.

  6.
I had a copy of Digital Music Mentor a couple of years ago. I thought it was fairly useless.
I suppose it depends on what you run through it - but I was quite impressed at the time. Haven't used it for ages since I prefer to do things the hard way for practice/training.

Solo - I'll PM you in a sec.

  7.
I don't know about other sellers but, in my case, and my defence, I'm only selling my '76 Jazz because I bought two 60s ....a '65 P Bass and a '66 Jazz! :) Soon my '75 will be up for sale too but for the only reason mentioned.
Ah. Interesting theory - are the prices of 60s Fenders good at the minute? Encouraging a load of 70s owners to part with theirs in search of even more ancient models? :)

  8.
There have always been good copies/fakes but these days the attention to detail is just scary and I reckon unless you know your stuff absolutely inside out, there's a fair chance of getting stung!
That's one thing I've definitely learned here. I don't think I'd ever buy a "vintage" Fender from anywhere other than BassChat - and even then I'd only do it if the seller was a respected and knowledgeable member.

  9. Just noticed there seems to be an unusually high number of old Fenders for sale right now.

Is this just a symptom of the hard times everyone is on, or is something weird going on? Maybe they're all due to fall apart in 2012 - some kind of built-in expiration?

  10. I must admit, it's been a few months since I've signed in but it has been pretty good, yes. Early on, there wasn't really much on actual technique etc. but a lot of good ideas and philosophies. Seems to have gotten better as the time has passed.

  11.
EDIT: Ibanez AFB200 as well; I'm assuming if it's a project you won't want to be spending Gretsch money :)
Hahahah. Yep - good call mate.

Cheers for all the suggestions guys. I think any of those would look great, I'll let you know what I end up doing.

Wal - that Veillette is unbelievably gorgeous! I'm proper in love. :)

  12. Just wondering if people can help me find basses with classical style tailpieces. I've seen one or two but can't remember any.

Have a project idea - assuming I ever finish that damn Peavy. :)

    Cheers guys.
