You do not mention what amp you will be using? However, some of the modern boutique cabs will give you what you want in a one cab solution for a similar, or lower cost than the two 2x10s. While I still lust after a stack, a throwback to the days when I almost played guitar, I have never needed a second cab. My current cab is a LFSys Monaco, 600 watts at 8 Ohms and more than a match for both my amps at 350 watts into 8 ohms. Look at the Monza for their range. Others with more experience of other makes will surely chime in shortly.

I mentioned that I’d be using something like an orange little bass thing, I’m also looking at the orange terror bass (I haven’t bought anything just yet, it’s all very much an idea in the works at the moment).

I hadn’t considered just getting one boutique cab for a similar price as two cheaper cabs. I’ve heard good things about barefaced 210 cabs. I wonder if one of those would be the trick!?

I’m also considering two of the orange OBC112s as a lightweight modular setup.

Admittedly I haven't tried the real Ampeg SVT212 AV cabinet in person, but my preferred IR cab sim for my "amp-less" setup is of that cabinet.

That said it will very much be a matter of personal preferences, and I would advice against just getting any random 210 cab, and ideally checking it out in person before buying, second best do a search and check out some YouTube demos, as every cab will sound different and have a rather big effect on your tone.

I'd love to try out in person but it seems nowhere really stocks bass amps and cabs these days, and if they do they have maybe 1 to try and nothing else to compare it to. Plus you could probably argue that testing in a store won't give you an accurate representation of how it behaves in a band situation. I feel like I'm going to have to gamble on something online and then return it if I don't like it. I can't find any YouTube videos of the eden or peavey cabs that I mentioned in my original post either, hence me asking on this forum if anyone has experience with them.

  3. I play in a (relatively loud) rock covers band and have used one of the old V1 fender rumble 100 (1x15) combos for years. It gets the job done but both my guitarists have upped their amps to 100W 2x12 setups and I feel like I’m starting to get slightly lost in the mix, and wondering if I need to upgrade my amp. I’m considering changing my setup to a lightweight head (something like the orange little bass thing) and pair of vertically stacked 210s - it seems to make sense for a number of reasons (footprint, portability, raising speakers closer to ear volume, two cabs providing more speakers for sound projection/volume).

Does anyone have any recommendations for a pair of affordable 210s? I’ve seen things like the peavey headliner 210 and the Eden EX210 for £200-300 each which seems to be the more affordable end of the spectrum. I’m wondering if, being some of the cheapest 210s out there, they’d be a waste of time spending money on or if it’s all just snobbery and they’d actually be just fine! Does anyone have any experience with either of these cabs (bonus points if you stacked two of them vertically!)?

If you've already got a sound you like before it goes into any amps have you thought about replacing the traditional bass rig with an FRFR?

That's what I have done for rehearsals and the very few gigs my bands play where the PA isn't adequate for putting the bass through it (two gigs in the last 6 years). I've got an RCF745, but there are cheaper models that will probably do the job just as well. Of course it doesn't have the "image" of a traditional bass rig, but it does fit on stage in places where there isn't easily room for and amp and cabs and the dispersion is far better than most dedicated bass cabs (which will be a definite advantage if you are not going through the PA).

I literally just this week discovered this as a potential option. I’ve read mixed things about using FRFR speakers for bass rigs. I know nothing about FRFR speakers…. I presume I’d need an active/powered speaker as the sansamp is just a pre amp with no power amp. What kind of power would I need in an FRFR speaker?

Buy on line. Return under the distance selling regs if your not happy.

THB I've got around this problem over the last 35 years by in the first instance having amps and cabs that were simply there to get my sound from line level to something people could hear, and these days by not bothering with back line at all and going straight into the PA.

I might try that, buy online and return if not happy. It’s a bit of a long winded way to test multiple rig options out though - I’d much prefer to go to a store and try multiple things in one go, and then giving it a ‘proper’ test drive at a gig

I’d love to go into the PA - my practice setup at home is just my pedal board with the sansamp vt DI at the end and then into my interface and listening back using headphones, and I really like the tone I get from that. My band doesn’t have a particularly fancy PA with any sub woofers so I don’t get any support from the PA, it’s all from my amp when playing live.

IME trying out a bass amp or cab in a shop is almost completely pointless.

The only true test is what it sounds like in the rehearsal room or at a gig with the rest of your band playing.

I get what you’re saying, it’s going to sound totally different at gig volume with the rest of the band. If you know of a shop who lets you ‘borrow’ gear to try in a gig setting before you buy it then I’m all ears.

failing that - plugging in and trying something in a shop is the only other alternative 🤷‍♂️

The Gallery or Bass Direct probably have the biggest selection.

I lived in London for 7.5 years and I’ve never heard of the bass gallery! Can’t believe it.
Camden is easy for me to get to so I might check them out. Thanks mate

  8. So I'm thinking of getting a new amp. I've got an ampeg SVT3PRO and SVT410 cab and am looking to downsize (these are both for sale if anyone is interested!). I'm thinking of getting one of these light weight heads and perhaps one 2x12 or maybe two 2x10s so I've got a bit of a more modular setup.

Where can I go to try out a selection of amps and cabs? I recently went to Andertons and they don't have a huge selection of things to try. I'm based in North Kent so would appreciate any suggestions for places in London/South/South East.

    Thanks! :D

  9. After much deliberation I have decided to part ways with this incredible bass rig. It's not suitable for my current gigging requirements so I want someone else to make good use of it and rumble some stages! It's had minimal use so is in excellent condition. Send me a message if you are interested. I'd be more than happy for you to come and try it out before buying it COLLECTION ONLY (Maidstone, Kent).

I'd be open to selling the cab and the head separately (£600 for the cab and £600 for the amp incl. flight case).

Ampeg SVT 3PRO bass head with a Thon 2U rack mount flight case.
    - 450 Watts 4 ohms/275 watts 8 ohms

    - 1/4" and Neutrik® speakON® outputs
    - 9-Band graphic EQ

This cabinet was purchased for a tour in early 2020....which then got cancelled with the lockdown, and the group then disbanded. The amp has pretty much sat indoors ever since, apart from perhaps 4 outings to pub gigs.

  10. I just installed some of these today on my Mexican Fender P Bass. I've never opened up the electronics on any of my basses/guitars in my 15 years of playing so was a bit apprehensive about changing pickups. It was so simple though! Everything on the EMG GZR set is provided and slots in nice and easy; I found this video very useful to show how to do it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbn5VCmPW50.

The only thing I had to 'do' to my existing electronics was cut the ground cable that went from the bridge to the input jack, so that I could clip it in with the other ground cable that is provided with the EMGs.

I wouldn't say the difference in sound between the stock PU and the EMGs was a major one; but it definitely makes a difference and was a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. the GZR provides a better low end/low mids for rock and metal - which is what I play, and what I felt my stock PU lacked.

  11. Here's what Ampeg say about this cab:

    • 400 Watts RMS
    • 4 Ohms
    • Freq response 50Hz - 18kHz
    • (H x W x D) 25.75” x 22.75” x 17.5”

Ampeg B410H Series 4x10 Bass Cabinets are quality two-way speaker cabinets suitable for all venue sizes. The cabinets feature heavy duty recessed handles, removable casters, and are built of void free baltic birch plywood. The jackplate features two 1/4” jacks wired in parallel, allowing easy daisy chaining from one speaker to another. Each of the jacks may be used as an input or a through connection. The three position HF Horn switch allows for:

    • Full high frequency output (0 setting)
    • High frequencies reduced by 6dB (-6 setting)
    • Horn shutoff (off setting)

I'm selling as I have upgraded to a different cab to better accommodate my head. The cab has a few surface scratches (see images), but please feel free to test it out before purchasing.

The cab has 4 swivel casters for ease of transport, and has two fold-away handles for 1-2 people to carry.

    Collection from SW16.

  12. Hello there BassChat!

29 year old metal/rock bass player from South London just joined.

I've been playing ~14-15 years now. Since being in London I was lucky enough to play with classic metal band Avenford and embark on a brief tour in Europe back in 2016. Later I played with SOAR, a hard rock/metal band based in South London. I'm currently in the process of forming a thrash metal/prog metal band in London with a guitarist - so if you know any clean metal vocalists or drummers looking for a project let me know!

Check my YouTube channel for some rock and metal covers and to see what I'm all about :D  www.youtube.com/user/eelongtolo

I love geeking out on gear, and finding the best ways to record bass so I thought I'd join the forum :)
