1.
the bass sounds that distorted on its own? thats some pretty special pick ups its got in it if so and i think thats ruined my gas for a eb-0 after hearing that ;p
Trust me - you can get silky smooth bass tones too. Its just the way he has his EB going thru distortion or the input gain is up on the amp.

  2.
Good call,

I 'had' to play a selection of Free and Bad Co at a jam night last night with my trusty Ray4 and it coped just fine. Sounded a damn sight better on Doctor Doctor than an EB0 would too.....
surely thats a matter of opinion :)

I've been upgrading my EB-O. Like the man said, replace all the dodgy hardware and you've got yourself something decent.

  4. A lot of this depends on how creative the producer(s) are. True, in my experience I've had producers / engineers DI my bass straight into the board, but I usually take a head and some cabs to a session just in case. I have had producers who want a sound coloured by miking up speakers etc. Often they dont' know what sound they are after ubtil they have heard something they like. Its good to offer alternatives. Personally I love P basses but there are good ones and not so good ones and they don't all sound the same either.

  5.
Looks really neat! Is it the angle of the picture or did you decide not to angle the slot in the end?
I tried it flat to begin with and straightened the relief right out of the neck. I was more than happy so I didn't need to angle the pocket in the end. My main problem was getting the string height low enough at the bridge. Like I said earlier I modified the bridge and since posting the pics, I've shaved off about a mm from the bottom of the bridge (with a belt sander!). It works and I haven't broken anything so I'm happy.

  6. Next phase will be to turn this EB0 into an EB3. The control cavity appears to be big enough to accomodate the extra pots for the EB3 arrangement. I'm planning on using the Aguilar OBP3 pre amp with volume, bass, mid, treble pots and a pickup blend pot. The mid pot is also switchable for two different frequencies (400/800 hz) to boost or cut. Check out Mike Watt talking about his bass here http://www.flyguitars.com/interviews/mikewatt3.php

Indeedy! Here are some pics. If you compare these with the photos from the beginning of the thread you can see that the neck now sits much lower (4mm) in the neck pocket. Also if you look at the bridge I have now removed the cylindrical saddles and filed grooves in the aluminium doobries instead. The action is slightly high still (not as bad as it looks in the picture) so I will take off another mm from the bottom of the bridge. It also needs a bit of a clean!

  8. I bit the bullet today and got on with the routing. I've been planning this all week in my mind and I'm well chuffed with the results!. This is what I did.
I made a pencil rubbing of the pickup screw holes. This enabled me to fix a piece of 3/4 inch ply to the bass by screwing into the pickup screw holes. I then routed out the template by using a bottom bearing trimmer bit (simply following the profile of the existing neck pocket). Then I changed router bit to a top bearing trimmer / plunge bit, set the cut depth and took off about 4mm from the neck pocket depth. I then put everything back on and lowered the bridge saddles. Then I hit a snag. Bum :) . Even with the bridge saddles on their lowest position they were still too high. Now I had a cunning plan! :brow: As I have a Hipshot bridge I knew I could remove the little saddles and file new ones in the aluminium underneath. This worked a treat. Now I have an EB with a similar feel to the set neck Gibson.

  9.
I have an amp project in the early planning stages and want to use potentiometers with set click positions. Are these widely available?
Stepped attenuators! Thats what I need and I've found what I'm looking for too here http://www.goldpt.com/compare.html

  10.
Lets put it this way - how many have a Superfly that still works ?
I tried a superfly (borrowed it from a shop) and hated it! I have an ABM EVOII900 which is fantastic - had it for ages gets loads of use never let me down. Ashdown don't always get it right but when they do it all works fine.

  11.
Presumably you want to give the Epiphone more of a set neck gibson feel with the board more or less flush with the body. If so, it's not much harder to rout an angled face in the neck pocket, negating the need for shims and maybe even the bridge spacers. How does it sound with your mods?

I'm going to use this router bit to deepen the neck pocket. First I will make a jig which will use the same shim as in the neck pocket to get the angle just right. I expect to take off up to 4mm. The neck will then sit nice and low like a set neck. Pics to follow.

  12.
Mine has 8ohm, 150w speakers. They are the Celestions not the Bluelines though, but the maths is right if the Bluelines are the same
I've decided to make two 600w 8ohm cabs (each housing 4x 8ohm 150w 10" bluelines) wired series / parallel. I can still daisy chain the two 4x10s to create 4ohm 1200w like the original 810 if I want.

  13.
1200 watts, 4 ohms, I think.
Thanks, I know the total spec. its the individual speakers in the system I need spec for. I imagine they are 8ohm wired in combination of series / parallel. I have a plan. :brow:

  14.
I don't think it matters that they're a bit too long.
I have extra long GHS flats on a jazz bass with some of the E string wound around the post and they've been on for years with no problems.
I can't decide whther to replace them with TIs, La Bellas or Status flats.
I don't like the rotosounds because they have ridges, are the TIs completely smooth?
The D and G seem completely smooth. There is a very slight texture to the E and A. Great strings I love them.

  15. I have an Epiphone EB-0 which has a 30" scale. I'm after a soft case for it. Anyone got one they want to sell or can anyone recommend a supplier? I don't want a 34" scale bag - cause it would be a bit baggy and guitar cases look too small. Thanks.

  16.
I've been thinking of trying these as I like a deep smooth tone without too much treble.
They say they are for 32" scale, so they may be too long for a 30" scale bass.

Please report back on how you find them.
The TI flats sound great though the E and G strings have some of the string (beyond the silks) wound around the posts as you have pointed out they are for 32" scale. No problems though - nice tension.

  17. At rehearsal last night I got a really strong burning electrical smell from one of my cabs. I haven't had any problems before. This is a homemade cab with a 300w 8ohm 12" Celestion in it. I have recently ported the cab which has increased the bass response. The speaker cable looked a bit flimsy when I took the back off today so I have replaced it with some seriously heavy duty cable (same stuff I use to link my Ashdown gear with). Any ideas what could have caused the burning smell?
