1. I don't let the local availability of a particular cab bother me when I'm looking for a cab, a bass, or an amp, and am therefore interested in hearing the results of a shootout between various cabs regardless of availability or otherwise...

    (personally speaking of course)

  2. Is this bass for sale at the bass gallery, in the new arrivals section? It's a lovely looking bass.

  3.
I agree that you'll never get an Ampeg overdriven sound out of it but I do think the EQ is extremely powerful and flexible on it. I have a rather extreme mid-range bump in it that sounds immense. The fully parametric EQ is something special - I don't think I've seen it on anything else. I think there are something like 10 valve stages in the preamp too, which could help to explain why it sounds so full and thick.
Ah I see I may have given the wrong impression with that statement. I absolutely agree that the EQ is powerful, but I meant it's got a sound that's never going to be an Ampeg, nor is it going to be a pod pro with a million average/budget tones with effects till next Xmas!

BTW those of you who know me will know that I bought an Aguilar Agro to play with. I'm not looking to improve on the sound I have with the 680, I couldn't. But I was interested to see if the Agro could open my eyes to *another* new world. It didn't. I'm not a distortion kinda guy so I may be the wrong person to judge...
HOWEVER, this last weekend, I rehearsed (we rehearse silently through a desk with cans and a TD20 kit) ...with the through-output of the 680 plugged into the input of the agro.
I had the 680 DI into one channel on the desk as usual, but I set up another channel on the desk for the output of the agro.
The mixed sound was very interesting. I had a very small amount of the Agro to augment the 680, and when the whole band struck up it almost vanished, but not quite. It will still take some experimentation to get the balance right but I'm convinced there's a place for it in my sound. Somewhere.
I imagine I'll have more to say on this subject in a few weeks.

  4. Hah !!

We have another convert to the best kept, but accidental secret in bass history.
I have been chatting with a long time fellow basschat member (name-withheld as it's up to him if he wants others to know) who has had the chance to try out a 680.
He described what is special about the sound, in a manner which struck so many familiar chords with my experience. It's almost funny.

Needless to say he is impressed enough that he intends to make it part of his arsenal.

I'm not going to bang on further about this piece of gear like a rabid evangelist. Really just go on a search, like the Knights of the round table, and you may just find your Grail.

  5.
I'm faily certain he traded this through Talkbass and has a fair amount of feedback there.

As for not receiving items this is why we buy with paypal
that's true...

Well it sounds like it's gone anyway, so all's well!

  6.
not the way things work though mate in the buy/sell world, the buyer always pays before getting, and thats true for pretty much everything. you dont go the supermarket and eat the food, then pay. you dont go online to a music site, and get them to send you a bass, n then pay when it arrives, just not the way it goes. i know what you mean on the trust thing though, and i think everyone knows about my ideas to keep basschat classifieds safe
No? But you go to a restruant and eat the food *then* pay... take a taxi ride, then do a runner... erm, I mean "then pay". :)

I see that he's offering a trade, in which case a mutual trust would mean him sending his before the other was received would it not? My cash would arrive almost the very instant I took ownership, wheras the traded wireless might never arrive.
That would be a similar situation to my proposal, with the exception I would be trading the cash. No?

You can't use the example of payment made to shops for goods, as they have easily checkable history and a reputation to maintain. Goods bought on forums have no comeback so my trust levels are VERY low for noobs.

I mean, I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I would rather loose the purchace than run the risk of throwing £130 down the pan. That was just my way of trying to safeguard myself, ...plus I have the feedback on here to support my suggestion. I realise it was an unusual request I made, but I don't think it was outlandish under the circumstances.

Good luck with the sale Nemo I'm sure my worries are misplaced mate.

  7. Does anyone have any dealings with Nemo? As he was a noob at the time, I said I was "interested" but would only pay, full asking price, once I had received the item. (I never have understood why buyers are expected to take all the risks) Anyway I gave a link to my "feedback history" on Bass chat as independant proof of *my* honesty on here.

I never got so much as a response...

I dunno, maybe I'm cynical, but a newbie in Cz who doesn't even respond... I just don't have the faith.
    Sorry

  8. Be v e r y careful how much you spend on LEDs otherwise you'll have spent more on them than the bass...

Maybe a cheaper way to improve it would be to drill lots of holes all the way through the body. With enough holes, it will become *all* holes, and a pile of plastic drill swarfings... Throw those away and keep the holes.

(Sorry but I had to bite back after the slight on my beloved Warwick brand.)

  9.
A rail to rail 'depth' of an SKB is 15 inches, and front rail to back lid is about 18 inches. A powersoft D series is about 17 inches. You don't need a torch light on stage and you don't need to shove your head or your arm into the rear the rack case.
Yeah, there you go. Exactly! ...What I said but put way more eloquently.

  10. That's true.
They (the Powersoft amps) are VERY deep.
They *will* fit in a Gator Rack, but they stick out of the back quite a long way into the lid...

However, in fairness, the space behind amps is usually a wasted space, so 1U high *is* a bonus, even on a deep amp. You pays your money you takes your choice!
Bear in mind that a high power 1U amp will tend to be of significant depth whilst a similar 2U amp can be a lot shallower so the total racked volume may be the same. The QSC PLX and PLX2 amps are all around 20lbs or less and hit a great balance of price vs size/weight/features/power. The Crown XTi amps are also well worth looking at as they're even cheaper and lighter and have built in DSP.

  11.
Are you sure Tony :)

    Stage I 4 string is a P/J rig...
Will these fit a thumb 5? Mine currently has 18v barts, and the sound is less lovely than he 4's with MECs

...Oooh will they run with 18v? or will I need a new pre too?

C'mon John... I need your knowledge buddy!

If these are compatible with my Thumb I'll take them off yooz!

    Andy

  12.
Powersoft amps seem quite difficult to get hold of over here. Sennheiser UK supposedly distribute them, but they are useless!
Mine came from Electro Music in Doncaster. I don't think it was a stock item but arrived really quickly.
I can heartedly recommend them too.
    Light, but exceptional quality.
Downside: Fairly expensive. (But not *really*, I mean, back in the early 80's, a very general rule of thumb was that amps used to cost about a pound per watt. ie 300watt cost £300 to buy (ish) yet even after 30 years of inflation the powersofts cost WAY less than £1 per watt...) but then they *are* a lot of watts!

  13. I can recommend Steve.. He's a smashing fella.
He was good enough to meet me halfway at no extra cost when I bought the Epi 212...
We got to gassing about old times and although our paths have never crossed I went away feeling like I'd re-united with an old buddy.

    Top Bloke...

    Andy

  14. Finbar: You are more than welcome mate! Nice to help a fellow Sheffielder!
Flanker: Thanks dude. Very nice meeting you. I could've stayed and chatted with you all day!

  15.
Yes, as far as I'm concerned this bass is sold (to me!) but you'll have to get confirmation from the current owner
Nope mate, It's all good! (I thought you'd backed out, but after my post I realised I'd got the wrong end of the stick)
I'll be waiting in the wings in the unlikely event you change your mind.

I've been after a nice Status since... well, ...since i fist saw them.
And I have the finances to actually afford one now. My search for the right one will have to continue. (I am a Warwick man for a while longer) :)
