You know what. I kinda like this in a weird way. Nice to see SBMM do some weird(ish) stuff. The short scale Ray in Fiesta Red they revealed at NAMM is absolutely glorious, and on my wish list for the next few months.

    Problems for me though are twofold;

    The price.

A shade under £1100 for an alarmingly basic instrument that's made in Indonesia (no issue with country of origin, but we know labour costs will not be commensurate with the price).

    The naming convention SBMM use.

Does anyone within the Sterling by Musicman company stop to think about how bad it's become? The Sterling By Musicman Sterling Bass. The ego involved in this is comical.

Yeah, it's the Sterling Sterling. But then it's got us talking about it so while it may annoy people it's not going to actually put anyone off buying one?

The £1100 for an Indonesian bass? Well. I don't know. I'm holding off judgement. If you'd asked me four years ago would I pay top dollar for a Chinese made bass I'd have laughed but then I got a Dingwall and I have never had a regret about that so... Maybe the wood, components and build quality will be up there but they'll be competing with much cheaper Sire and Yamaha basses that are flawless so good luck.

Guilty as charged, Your Honour! 😁

Yes... T'was me that Kim's refering to that he met up with yesterday, and although we didn't do a trade in the end, that's more to do with my two 5ers not being right for him as opposed to any reflection on his Jazz bass, which is really good!

As he says in his For Sale blurb above, the neck is a thing of beauty and it plays beautifully.

Sound-wise, it sounds just like a Jazz should and it's nice and light and balances really well.

I happen to really like the red body/maple fingerboard/ tort guard look too..

Whoever does finally snap this up will definitely have a really cool looking, great sounding Jazz bass on their hands, that's for sure!

    GLWTS Kim.. 👍😊

    P. S. That Dingwall 5er of yours is some instrument too...

thanks Nik- it was a pleasure to geek out with you over the basses, and I really enjoyed your playing. You’ve properly got the chops!

  3. I have had a great meet up with a fellow bass-chatter who came around with a couple of very yummy basses but we decided not to swap/buy. My jazz wasn’t for him and I have come to realise that my Dingwall Combustion 5-3 can do everything and I don’t really need any more basses. So really I want to move it on. Ideally I’d like to meet up so the buyer can try it and I may be able to deliver within the M25 by arrangement, I’d really prefer not to courier as it’s such a faff but an open to conversation…

In my mind not really. Your dad bought the amp and paid good money for it that possibly was tight at the time like most of us.

It was designed for keyboards not bass guitar. Certainly use it but use it respecting your father's feelings on the matter.  Destroying it by using it "as I wish" would be a selfish act.

    wait, are you my dad?!

  5. I love Jazz basses and have been putting this together for ages. Bits from here, there. Squier body, Fender roast maple neck, badass bridge, Fender '74 pickups, Hipshot ultralite tuners but I'm just not playing anything more ther than my Dingwall 5 string. I'm in London - up for any kind of test. Would rather not post but do have a hiscox case could include for extra. I'm not really looking to trade any more but do try me.

Currently strung with Olympus flats (cheap ones) but I have a set of Elites in the case I can put on so that's £40 worth of strings for a start.

Update - 4.1kg so nice and light. Sorry - no idea what the body is made from.

Many years back I used to take a 1x12 cab on luggage wheels - and a bass - from Clapham Junction to if memory serves Highgate for a jazz class. Ask me about the time I got there and found the escalator wasn’t working.

Class d amps and neodymium drivers have changed my life!!!

A bass player I replaced, back in the 80s, left his Ohm amp and 2x15 cab in his old band's rehearsal room. It had a fantastic sound and even when I plugged my rubbish Carlsbro Stingray combo head into the speaker cab I got a great sound.

Unfortunately for me, he came by and picked his gear up after a couple of weeks and I was left with my rubbish Carlsbro Stingray combo, which sounded like a wet fart in comparison.

They went into pro-PA installations by the start of the 90s didn't they? OHM?
