1. that's totally badass. i love the guitar hero series ... how did you get hooked up with this opportunity?

My Band!

We recently got our myspace redesigned ... and we've got 3 tracks from our upcoming EP that you can listen to. http://www.myspace.com/jslrocks Check it out! We're all happy with the recording quality and whatnot.

4. is there something i can do to check if it's the pre-amp tube? i'd rather not buy a new one if i don't have to.
5.
Sounds good (or bad) to me. I dont know how easy it is to replace the tube, and I guess you dont have a manual. I can't remember seeing Peavey manuals online so it might be worth a repair guy looking at it. Dont be surprised it the clip light comes on at 50% as this is dependant on a lot of things like the input level. An amp will only output its maximum rated power, and the DDT is just a limiter that puts on hard compression when the threshold is reached, but I would not expect it to distort. It would be worth you reading the basschat wiki to see how it all works. I have never run my peavey amps with the DDT on all the time cos they did not sound so good despite the claims the effect it is inaudible. It is awarning not a target
well on my amp, there is a light for DDT, and a separate red light for clipping. the clipping light usually comes on first, and the sound is distorted before either of them turn on.
6.
I am not familiar with the Peavey Pro-bass 500 but I presume it has the DDT to stop the power amp clipping. IIRC its got some full parametric EQ so some fairly extreme settings are possible. Set all the EQ to flat. Its got a tube pre-amp so its possible the tube is knackered. Try the amp with a different cab. Dont assume cos the Avatar is brand new its not faulty. You will be pretty pissed if you pony up for a new amp and the cab is faulty so you have to make sure what the problem is. Check the speaker cable. Make sure you are not using a signal lead for speaker cable. Does the Avatar have speakon. Do your other cabs have speakon. Can you run them all up using the same leads. If the amp farts with all your cabs then it needs repairing or replacing. Dont assume it will sound great mixed up with your other cabs. Mixing cabs produces unpredictable results so make sure you have a good listen. And the view that 15 cabs go lower than 4x10's is a very out of date view.
I've been using the same head for a number of years, and it's given me this sort of problem with everything i've used it with. the clip light goes on when i turn it past 50% at all, and sounds very very distorted, through all 3 of my cabs, using all the speaker cables in my band's possession. I'm fairly certain i've diagnosed this correctly. you mentioned that it might need the tube replaced? is that an easy thing to try out?
7.
If you go for Hartke.....be careful, they're very loud.
well that's exactly what i'm going for. my current set-up just isnt cutting it.
8. Thanks again! I'm going to continue to search for a while before I make any rash decisions, but I'm definitely keeping the hartke (and possibly the markbass) in mind! any other suggestions? I'm really just looking to be louder ... i'm not a total tone whore ... i can get a decent sound with my bass and pedals, i'm more interested in just getting as much volume as possible out of a new head. Also, I am running 2 cabs (I've got the avatar and then deciding between my GK backline 115 or hartke transporter 410 which are both in my basement right now).
9. Thank you Boneless. I was actually looking at the Hartke1000. What are the advantages of having a tube pre-amp? EDIT: Also, I'm looking at the specs for the Hartke1000, and i'm a bit confused about this part: Dual Parallel Mode: 2 x 225 watts @ 8 ohms, 2 x 320 watts @ 4 ohms, 2 x 545 watts @ 2 ohms Bridge Mode: 1 x 750 watts @ 8 ohms, 1 x 1100 watts @ 4 ohms what is the difference between dual parallel and bridge mode?
10. So I just got my new cab in the mail today, an Avatar 2x12 (www.avatarspeakers.com), and i went and hooked it up to test it out. Now, this cab is rated at 500watts RMS, so it shouldn't be distorting being played with a peavey probass500 (375watts at 4ohm where i have it with another cab). But I find that when I turn the pre-gain/post-gain above half-way, it distorts like mad, and isn't even very loud. I'm a bit disappointed, having just dropped most of my christmas money on a new cab that I can't even play to its potential with my current head. SO, point to the story ... I'm looking to upgrade my head. I've been looking at maybe buying a separate pre-amp and power-amp, but I'm not quite sure what i'm looking for in a pre-amp. also, i'm not sure that this would be the most cost-effective thing to do ... being a poor college student, I can't afford to spend thousands of dollars. I'd say my budget is around 600$ (though if i could find a website that offers no-interest payment plan, i could increase that by a bit), and would like to get as many clean watts as possible. I am open to using a tube amp (i think you call them valves here, or is that a different thing?)/ hybrid, but I'm rather uninformed about them, so again ... not sure what I'm looking for. oh, i am in the US, if that makes any difference.
11.
Have you also considered ACME cabs?
never heard of them. how are they priced? i'm looking to spend around 400USD per cab.
12.
The Avatars are meant to be good value for money, but as mentioned above not a lot of people in the UK will have used one as they're not readily available on this side of the Atlantic.
haha yeah i didn't really think that through ... i think i'll end up going with the Avatar, as it's much lighter along with input i've gotten from a number of sources. thanks!
13.
Big, full & gritty = DiMarzio Model J's in series. G.
i've heard that from a number of sources, i think i'll be going with that! how hard is it to install new pickups?
14. So I got a good hunk of cash for christmas, and have been wanting to upgrade the pickups in my MIM Jazz for some time now. Right now, I play with the both pickups on full all the time, and i want a big, full, in your face kinda sound that cuts through the mix, and is possibly a little bit gritty (though i can get that with OD pedal). What would you guys recommend? Nothing crazy expensive, but I'm willing to drop a bit of cash if it'll improve the tone of my bass.
15.
I do wish I could both play and be in in the audience though.
Oh you can ... you just need a long cable, and not to be playing on a real high stage. It's great fun.
16. I'd like to think I'm pretty good. Been playing for about 9 years now ... I spent the first 2 or 3 pretending I was going to be the next jaco or wooten, so my chops are pretty good. Since then I've been working on just being a solid bassist in a band setting, which I feel I am. I just play pop-rock, but I usually get compliments after I play, so I'm pretty happy haha.
17. I am in the US, so I can order the Avatar from their website. and for being better, i was leaving it open ended to see what you guys think. is one better for a certain type of music ... is one known for being more solidly built, is one much more popular, etc. etc. etc. Just trying to find out about these cabs a little bit. And I'm asking here mostly because I can try out the SWR, but I can only order the avatar online, and won't be able to try it out before i buy it.
18. Avatar B410 NEO http://www.avatarspeakers.com or SWR Goliath III Bass Cabinet 700 Watts 4x10 SWR is a little cheaper, but i want my decision based on which is better. I'd be playing it with a peavey probass500 (375watts). Thanks!
19. right now i've got a 1x15 and a 4x10 stacked. i'll be upgrading both of them soon, probably to a 2x12 and 4x10 stack, as i don't need the super low end of the 15.
20. i've got "more pedals than any guitarist i know" according to my drummer. and "there no way i could ever use them all" according to another bassist friend. really, though, i only have 6-7 on my pedalboard and 2 or 3 that i dont use anymore.

hello
Hey Luke. Only thing you need to know is it is a cool place.
haha cool. and i'm hoping at least somewhat helpful when it comes to actual bass issues?
22. :amaze:

hello

hey all, just joined this board today. i'm from the us, i hope that's ok! i've been playing bass for 9-ish years, and play a MIM jazz that i've modded a tiny bit. i play through a full stack, peavey head with GK and hartke cabs. i'm in a pop/rock band that's gigging fairly regularly. anyhow, i saw this section so i thought i'd say hi. anything i need to know about this place?
23. hi, this is my first post here, so if this is the wrong section, i apologize! so here's my current situation: right now, i have a peavey probass500 powering a hartke transporter 410 and GK backline 115. each cab is 8ohm, and the head puts out 375 watts at 4ohm. i am currently saving to upgrade my two cabs. I think i'm going to go with an avatar 212 and 410. now, here's my dilemma. the head i have is stable at 2ohm, so i could get both cabs at 4ohm (for total load of 2ohm) and be pushing 500 watts. which is what i was originally thinking. HOWEVER, i imagine that i will eventually be upgrading my head as well (not anytime soon, but eventually...). so, what i really want to know is, are there a lot of heads that are stable at 2ohms? though this is not going to be an issue in the short term, if i want to get a really nice head unit, am i going to be severely limited if i need it to be stable at 2ohms (or screwed having to upgrade my cabs again)? i'm hoping to get the avatar 212 within a couple weeks after x-mas, so i'm trying to figure this out now. thanks to anyone with any insight!
