Will either of these process adversely affect the balance between body and neck - i.e. introduce neck dive?

It's entirely possible, but on an 11lb beast I would imagine you have a fair bit of leeway :)

The biggest cavity machined into a bass already (the control cavity) is ironically in the place that increasing the weight would guard against neck dive.

On my own instrument I'll eventually be chambering from behind the upper horn and back towards the bridge and possibly a small area out from the lower horn.

  2. This is something I consider a lot.

I hanker after a lighter bass, but everything other than the weight of my instrument is perfect.

I'm assuming it's a bolt on neck. If this bass absolutely ticks all the boxes for you, would you consider having a new body made and transferring everything over?

Or more radically have the current body chambered? (this is something I will most likely do to my instrument in the end).

I know there are no guarantees with keeping the sound you love if changing the body though.

11lbs is no joke though - I'm not surprised your back complains.

    Good luck :)

    Hi everybody!

Finally getting around to post some pictures on my progress with the cab so far. Thanks a lot Stevie for putting the kit together, I'm having a great time working on it and I wouldn't have managed to prepare the parts like this myself!

I did the assembly and Gluing quite quickly (maybe too quick). I forgot to glue the brace for the handle before closing the cab. But I solved it by cutting it in half and then gluing it together and to the top inside the cab. And I didn't have enough big clamps to cover all the important spots but I changed the position of one clamp after a few hours and that closed the only gap I had so now I'm pretty happy with how it looks.

I really like the color of wood so I decided for a natural finish. I first gave it some darker color with one layer of varnish and then I went for transparent yacht varnish. They only had the shiny one but I actually like it a lot. I have one layer on the cab now and will add the second today, probably I'll do 3 in total. I think the yacht varnish is very tough and should offer a good protection.

Most of the parts I'm missing will arrive today except for the fatial pro driver which wasn't in stock and will Take about two weeks before it'll be delivered. I'll have to see how to screw the handle well now that the whole cab is already in one piece. Also I found a tube to use for the port which is just slightly loose in the porthole. How do you fix it in the hole?

And it's there an alternative to needled felt I could use? Maybe some kind of acoustic foam? Because if I order it from ebay it'll cost 10£ for delivery and will take 2-3 weeks. And I couldn't find it in other places here in holland🤔

    I absolutely love this Johannes.

What will you use for a grill?

  4. Maybe not the cup of tea for most here, but Al absolutely defined if not created a genre with his band Sleep.

Matamp and Rickenbacker were part of the bands image and inherent to their sound from their formation in the early 90's.

Granted These practically unplugged demo videos aren't representative of the sound he makes (what can only really be described as righteous), but his technique comes from coaxing the tone from a wall of High gain amplifiers.

Sleep and Om are well worth checking out, especially the offerings with Chris Haikus on drums.

    🙂

  5. I can tell you know all of what I'm about to say.

Without a "strategy", and a common idea of goals and direction it doesn't matter whether the band spends 50quid or 5grand recording the next single/Ep/album etc.

The end product is only of partial importance. How one promotes it and what one wants from the promotion is vital.

The whole band needs to plan ahead, so promotion prior to a release and different type of promotion at various stages after release.

It seems you'll have your work cut out getting the other band members on side with this.

To your producer question I would love to work with a producer for my next Ep.

Although I have a keen sense of the sound and context I want for my music I would welcome someone that could consolidate my aims and take them further.

As a solo artist this is much easier for me than if I was part of a band though.

Sadly I can't afford to bring in a producer so that's decided for me.

. It's part of the modern obsession with having EXACTLY what you think you want, rather than going with what you're given to some degree. Strings, pickups, bows, rosin, blah blah. Spend less time worrying about all of that, and D or Eb necks, and just play. Time spent playing will have far more effect on your musicianship than converting your bass to a D neck

My double basses had Eb and D necks and I never gave it a thought.

My teacher couldn't even say without thinking what the three basses he owned were.

exactly as you say Neil It doesn't matter one jot until having read it matters makes one worry and obsess :)

What's it for? Many drivers have a good full range potential but it completely depends on what box they're going into.

It's not quite clear what your plans are, but if you're going for a lightweight build, you should avoid ceramic magnets and multiple drivers, as they will make your cabinet heavier than it needs to be. I cannot see any situation apart from bedroom practice where you could get away with a single 6" - so I'd avoid those

I'll reveal all in due course as it's perhaps a little too left field for a Friday night on basschat 😉

The P Audio E8-200N is a good quality 8-incher that sounds good with bass guitar and handles a fair amount of power. It's also light and relatively inexpensive at £55.

The Faital Pro 8PR200  is probably the best, lightweight 8" speaker for bass guitar. It costs about £100...

Excellent, thank you Stevie, this is precisely what I needed.

Most small drivers will come in heavy cabs. Small drivers won't have the full low end response you are asking for, unless you use lots of them. You can do better than that.

IMO if weight has become an overriding concern and you still want great tone and useable volume, I'd suggest 1 or 2 Barefaced cabs. A Super Compact is 21lbs (9.5kg) and a One10 is about 15lbs (6.8kg). That's what I use with my Aguilar amps.

    Cheers Chris,

My tech rider specifies a bass cabinet to be provided by the promoter or venue, the small driver is for something a little different

Congratulations on being played on't wireless. That'll give a bit of an ego boost in your recovery. I've been following your stuff on Bandcamp for some time. I love the sounds you make. Haven't heard anything else like it and highly individual. Keep up the good work.

That's so kind, thank you Bassbus!

  11. Hello,

I'm looking for help from more tech savvy members.

It was on my to do list for 2020 anyway and a recent emergency hernia operation has meant it is now mandatory.

I'm simplifying my live set up (which is rather unorthodox ) to go from 2 Phil Jones double 4's to a mixer, a small amp and a single cabinet.

Without going into the complete intricacies of my live show immediately, can anyone either from direct experience or just general expertise, point me towards some high power+full range 6inch and 8inch 8ohm drivers. I can use google, but would like opinions from members here :)

    Cheers

    Thomas

I've heard BD and The Gallery do set everything up to a high standard, the way it should be! The Bass Centre did too from memory....

The couple of times I bought a bass from the Wapping Bass Centre the guys there did a running set up of the ones I was trying to tweak to my tastes!

But that shop was pretty special

    Hi Scales,

I'm not sure where you are based, but I am using a home-brew 1 by 10 that weighs about 7 kg.

The build thread and drawings are here

    Absolutely brilliant David!

I'm going to build a similar cab to your MK1

  15. I've played with a couple of people who did it.

The cello scale length is a good bit shorter than a bass guitar so if you want to tune in 4ths to E, A D G you may not like the response or feel.

Have you tried it in 5ths?

Learning an instrument in 5ths will help your bass playing as you break up habits of just letting your hand fall into a pattern and really think about the notes you're playing.

Of the people I knew who did tune to 4ths the one who had the best tone kept the Low C as a starting point, so then F, Bb, Eb.

You could easily tune your G down to F, and then you'll only need a new higher tension D and A strings to tune down.

This will save you a fair few quid.

whatever you do you'll have a lot of fun.

Remember only change one string at a time to prevent the soundpost from falling over inside.
