  1. I have a Warwick Corvette unlined fretless.  A handsome beast but I’ll be selling it soon as the narrow string spacing doesn’t work with my big hands.  I’ve maxed out on the adjustment but the fingerboard just isn’t wide enough - may suit someone with more nimble fingers.

  2. Just looking into this a bit more, it seems to be just what I'm looking for apart from the string spacing.  At the moment I'm using a Warwick Corvette 5 string but the string spacing is too narrow at 15.5mm, I assume you are talking about being measured at the bridge.  That said , I think I should come and have a look at it anyway, and as it happens I am visiting my daughter over the weekend in Hertfordshire which is not far from you.  Are you around?

I've always thought this bass, currently listed in the for sale forum, is rather pretty.

I must have missed that.  Doubt if it's still for sale but but have asked.  Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.  I've done quite a few hours of research, been up a few blind alleys, but it's helped me realise exactly what I'm looking for.  So when I said semi-acoustic, I actually don't want it to make too much noise as I normally practice between 4:30 & 6:30 in the morning - so whilst an arch top acoustic would be nice, it's doesn't really suit my particular purpose.  Adding that I'm looking for an unlined, fretless 5-string with a thumb rest with piezo and a magnetic pickups, and preferably short-scale, this narrows the field quite dramatically - in fact it's now looking like I'll have to up the budget and go for a custom.  The front runners seem to be Shuker, Rob Allen or Rick Turner.  But has anyone had any experience of this one?

Sounds very much like an upright to me, but it could be just a one-trick pony which again does not fit the bill as I need it to sound like a bass guitar for most of the time because I also have an upright anyway.  Having said that, some gigs only have a few numbers that need the Upright sound, so if the bass guitar can do that passably it will save me carting a lot of extra gear in.

The biggest problem is actually getting to try one of these basses, I could probably make a 2 day trip to Yorkshire to see Jon Shuker but I'd also dearly love to try out a Rob Allen Mouse or MB2 and a Rick Turner.  California is a long way, but who stocks them in the UK?  I think it would be very unwise to go for a custom bass without ever having tried one that manufacturer's basses.

Anyway, that's where I am at the moment - any more advice will be much appreciated.

BTW ezbass, was that a serious suggestion about the much revered Jabba_the_gut?

  4. Letting my other Aguilar cab go as I now have my old-geezer friendly Barefaced.  This is like my DB115, in excellent condition, gigged at relatively low volumes and treated with utmost care so no significant marks or damage.  Delivers a lot of power for its size.  Collection from Epsom Surrey or will send by courier for £50, or maybe meet halfway.

    Specs:

The DB cabinets have the aggressive midrange to punch through a loud band while maintaining the full-range, musical sound that is the Aguilar signature.  Employing 13 ply Baltic Birch, Custom Eminence drivers, and Aguilar``s custom horn and crossover the DB cabinets have a clear, focused midrange and extended lows and highs. These cabinets are the first Aguilar cabinets to feature a classic rock look with distinctive color combinations.

Easy to carry but packing a mighty punch. The DB 210``s small size and classic look make it perfect the perfect compliment for smaller stages.

Two 10" cast frame woofers, 56 oz. magnet
    Power Handling: 350 watts RMS
    MAX SPL: 124 dB
    Impedance: 4 or 8 ohms
Phenolic tweeter with integral phase plug
Custom crossover with variable tweeter control
One Neutrik Speakon and two 1/4" inputs
    Frequency Response: 41 Hz - 16 kHz
    Sensitivity: 98 dB 1W 1M
    Recessed deep-dish handles
    13 ply Baltic Birch

  5. I'm using a fretless Warwick RB Starbass at the moment but looking for a similar bass (ie semi-acoustic) but better quality.  I know the German Pro Series is an option but are there any other suggestions?  Ideally I want a long/standard scale 5 string without fretlines sub £2k if poss.  Any ideas?  I thought the D'Angelico sounded ideal but now found out they've stopped production of Bass guitars!

  6. No replies - guess that answers my question.

  7. Anyone had experience of a D'Angelico bass?  If so what did you think of it?  I'm looking for a fretless one to try but wondered if anyone has any experience of these basses and could comment on the general build quality etc.  They look really good on the website and the reviews are good, but the reality is often somewhat different.  I would love to benefit from the experience of one of you wise owls out there.

  8. Sadly I have to go for a smaller lighter cabinet now.  Less than 2 years old, still a current model that retails just under £1000, this cab is immaculate - complete with removable castors, I also have the original box.   It has been gigged a few times with my TH500 but only in a small venue so has not been pushed hard.  The cabinet is really well made, the sound is pure - with Aguilar you get out exactly what you put in.
Free collection from Epsom Surrey or I can send by courier for £50.
I also have a DB210 bought at the same time that will be going up for sale soon.

    Manufacturer blurb
This cabinet was designed to have great low-end extension but with the punchy midrange that is the signature sound of the DB cabinet line. This combination makes the DB 115 full enough to reproduce the deep presence of a multi-string instrument while being focused enough to accommodate all playing styles. The DB 115 is versatile enough to pair with either the DB 210 or DB 410 for a very powerful full range rig or as a great standalone cabinet!

  9. went down to the Barefaced factory yesterday to check out the size and weight of their cabs because I'm looking to change my Aguilars (DB115 & DB210) to a single, smaller, lighter cabinet (at 73 I'm getting past lugging heavy stuff around now).  It seems the Big Twin 2 should do the trick, so before I order one does anyone want to sell or swap their Big Twin2?  The Aguilars (excellent condition, almost as new, I have the original packaging) will be up for sale as soon as I take delivery of the Big Twin, so if anyone wants to register an interest?   Price is per cab.

  10. Thanks for the advice, just got to work out how to do that.

Good move, but move this add to Amps & Cabs for sale - and perhaps an ad in Items Wanted - you'll get more interest there (you can still indicate that you only want to trade, but to be honest, there's nearly always a couple of Big Twins or similar for sale here, so a cash sale for your Aggies might still work best for you).

  12. Thanks so much to all of you for taking the trouble to advise me on this.  I wasn't aware of Barefaced cabs, but having now educated myself a little more I can totally understand why you have pointed me in that direction - I think you have probably saved me a whole lot of time, frustration and money.

I have now emailed Barefaced to check out what they recommend and I expect to be changing the cabs out fairly soon.  Any fit young Aguilar fans should watch this space...........

    Thanks again guys

  13. I currently use Aguilar TH500 with a DB115 and a DB210 for my fretless bass and double bass, but as I am now comfortably into my 70's I find the 115 a little challenging to lift around, so I am thinking of changing to a couple of PJB C47's.  Has anyone else done this?  Will I be disappointed?  Do I need to change the amp?  The benefit of your experience would be much appreciated.
