  1. I just put some D'Addario nylon tapewound strings on my Warwick Streamer.  I'd never tried any strings like these before and I normally play with roundwounds.

These are silky smooth to the touch... like playing with a silk glove on the hand.  Very warm and thumpy.  I tend to be a fast and heavy pick player, and was worried that I would simply tear them apart when I play, but they seem to be really robust.

However, the tapewounds are a lot more quiet than the roundwounds that I just took off... but I have a GK Legacy with 800 Watts and there is plenty of headroom... so I just turn up the volume.  It's a bit of an experiment, but I have to say that I'm quite pleased with these strings at the moment and they gave me a very good first impression.

  2. I had to leave a band that I had been in for many years and really loved... I was moving away to a different uni.  I put off telling the guys for weeks and weeks... and then one day when I was alone with the drummer I spit it out.  The drummer then broke the news to everyone else.

It was still far enough in advance that I could continue to play shows and help train my replacement.  But after I left they went through bass player after bass player.  Must have been 4-5 of them in the span of about two years.  Eventually they all split up and went their own ways.

  3. I wrote to Polar directly (distributor for GK in the UK) to ask about the delay, and they replied:

"We’re due to be shipped all of our Legacy stock at the end of this month, which means they should be with the shops by early Nov.  Keep your eye on that availability, it should update shortly."

So perhaps another month or so on the Legacy heads here in the UK.

  4. I had ordered a GK Legacy 800 with Anderton's, and was expecting to receive it on / around Oct. 10th, but then received an email from Anderton's that the delivery has been moved to Autumn 2020(!).

Anyone know what happened?  Is there a design flaw in the circuit that needs to be fixed?  This seems like an unusually long delay for a supply issue.

Strange as I tried the GKs DI/preamp box with a set of fresh looking DT770s which they just had there plugged in, the guy who gave me a jazz bass to try it out was very helpful and gave me a quick rundown of the hidden options etc. and told me to play with it as long as I liked.

Okay, that's probably after I arrived.  I suspect I may have been one of the very first people at their stand on Saturday morning.  A bit unfortunate.

  6. To be more precise, my issues with the show relate more to a few of the vendors.  Here is the email that I received from Polar (UK distributor for GK and Ampeg), which left me with the impression that I might get a discount on a GK Legacy 800 if I attended the show (okay, yes, I admit that I personally fooled myself regarding what they wrote).  I guess judge for yourself if it looks a bit misleading:

"We should have the Legacy 800 available to try at the Bass Show, and we will have retail partners with us who can sell you GK products, however we wouldn’t have anything you could take away on the day.

We could arrange a shipment to your address, and you could pay for the product at the show, (we may even be running some exclusive show offers)."

I had my earplugs with me, so I was not bothered so much by the ambient nose levels.  It's just that Polar should have also provided a set of headphones at their stand (and the Legacy has a headphone jack in the rear), knowing that the show would be loud.  Or maybe I was supposed to bring my own headphones?

  7. I was also disappointed.  Couldn't find the 'Basschat' stand.  No special deals on anything as far as I could tell, despite what Polar told me via email regarding the new GK Legacy.  Even things like strings and picks were more expensive than on the Internet.  Looper pedal was out on display but "oh that's not actually here and won't be available until October 1st'.  Marshall folks sold me the wrong size shirt (but my 11 year old son is happy with it!).  Way too noisy... also could not hear what the GK Legacy really sounded like (and it DOES have a headphone input but there were no headphones available when I was at the stand).  Sorry to say it, but I think I'll stay home next time.

  8. Just arrived from Amsterdam today (Bass Connection)... a silver Warwick Chrome Tone LX 5 from 2004.  Seems to be in pretty good shape... the wood body on this thing was chromed at the Warwick factory.  Fingerboard is Ebony and it has bell bronze frets.  MEC pick-ups.  Very nice sound.  It has some very minor scratches and dings which add character, but that also means I won't feel bad about gigging it.

  9. My gig rig is now complete following the purchase of a 15" GK cabinet for £44 off of eBay (I sh*t you not).  It works great... I even have the GK bi-amping running on it too.

Hopefully I can convince the wife that we no longer need to use the front door... it fits so well in that little niche there.  And if the police come to follow-up on the noise complaints, the cabinet stack makes for a nice barricade!

  10. I recently purchased a used Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II head from Dave.  A huge THANK YOU to Dave, who did next day shipping on the head for me.

The head is in pristine condition, included the original box (I like to keep those too), manual and some personal tips from him.  I really, really like the sound of this 1001RB... Sounds amazing together with the Warwick and GK 410 RBH cabinet.

I highly recommend Dave as a seller.  He's honest, patient and has excellent communication skills.  It's been a real pleasure!

  11. Here's a photo of my new Warwick GPS Streamer LX (Maple Nirvana Black Satin) purchased from the folks at Peach Guitars (in Colchester), as well as the used Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II head that I just purchased from Dave (dmccombe7).
