1. Hi all,

I am selling my BOSS GT10-B bass effects processor which I have had flight cased. I have used this unit for the last two years with the Carl Palmer Band and it's been all around the world with me. It's an awesome bit of kit and was the perfect solution to having to use multiple sounds within the same song. It's easy to program and store patches, and has an expression pedal and built in looper. Power supply and manual are included in the sale. It's loaded with all my patches for Carl's set, but I can easily restore to factory settings if needed.

I'm selling it because I recently stepped down as Carl's bassist and no longer have any kind of need for it since I don't use effects in my regular playing.

These cost £375 new and the flight case cost me £300. Am looking for £500 for the lot.

If you are interested, please contact me either here on Basschat or via email: [email protected]. I'm going to give it a week on here before it heads off to eBay.

    Cheers
    Stuart

  2.
I ordered it about 18 months ago from Amazon and still no sign of it :)
Hi Rumple,

If you order it from Amazon you'll never get it! This book is only available from Bassline Publishing. Amazon lists any book with a barcode, and will claim they can get it for you. Every week they put in an order for about 8 of these books. I always deny the order, because they pay so little to independent publishers. In the case of this book and the first Level 42 book that I wrote, I would be selling them at a loss if I sold them to Amazon.

Incidentally, the book is currently out of stock, but I am arranging the reprint as we speak. If there is anyone here who has ordered and not received a copy please let me know.

    Stuart

  3. Marvin,

Thanks for the nice comments, really pleased to hear you are enjoying the book!
Received the copy of The Brand New Heavies - Brother Sister bass book I ordered a few days ago, this morning.

It's a lovely book. Stuart Clayton provides not only clear notation but also helpful performance notes for each track. It clearly surpasses the two other notation books I've been given lately. You can tell it's been written by someone who has got a passion for bass and music in general. I wouldn't hesitate in buying another of his books.

Stuart's also a Basschater so obviously and damned decent chap.

The only thing I may suggest, as an addition, for the BNH's book is a live size poster of N'Dea Davenport to be included.
4.
Someone asked for this one after I posted my transcription of Jeff Berlin's 'Bach'. It is the whole of his '20,000 Prayers', solos and everything, but, after getting the dots down, I was unable to fathom the chords. :) I made a start and guess I could keep trying but, to be blunt, I don't really want to spend that much time on it. So I figured I would post it anyway so that, if anyone is of a mind to complete it, they can. Its a really heavy one!! Hope its of use to someone.
Hey Bilbo,

Good job! Definitely some cool stuff in there, and definitely some difficult chords. Nice job on the solo, there's a fair bit of rhythmic juiciness going on in there.

It might be a bit early for jazz fusion, but I just listened to the track and.... yuck.

  6.
Lately I've been playing a whole lot of shows and been suffering cramps mid show causing me to struggle when playing mid set/song.
I try and stretch my hands with a daily routine of movements but it seems to be to no avail. I've figured that it's probably my routine that's not good enough and I was just looking for some suggestions or examples? My general routine is just bend, hold and rotate but so far it's just given me cramp haha

    Any takers?

  7.
There is another wonderful little typo as well as the miss labeled photos of The Gallery workshop....

A missing apostrophe makes a lot of difference in this month's 'The Low Down'.

Just to set the record straight,
"and performing with a Pat Metheny Big Band", as apposed too, "and performing with Pat Metheny's Big Band"...whoops!

There is, as you've guessed, a slight difference in the two statements. Although the big band are still fantastic and I can't wait to hopefully get back in the seat in the near future!

Really enjoyed the article on Martin's 'The Woodshed', one day, I'm sure, I'll own a Sei myself.

    Very best all, happy playing!

    Phil,

I was about to text you to congratulate you on scoring such an awesome gig!!

Good to see you in the mag though, and nice to hear you finally got your Spector bass.

  8. Damon has just joined the bass team at BIMM Bristol. Actually, I say team, but it's just me and him!

He's a great guy, and a terrific player. I actually had no idea he'd done so much cool stuff, but my hat is well and truly off.

  9.
There is a good summary of the transcription process here: Dave Liebman is one bad mutha

I personally use this way as when I transcribe something it is because I like what they are doing and I want to be able to do what I'm listening to. So it takes you through what to do with the transcription once you have it down and want to get aspects of it into your own playing.

There are a few other good educational articles on his site also.
Just read the article the Mikey has recommended and it's fantastic. Thanks for the link Mikey!

  11. Hi all,

Thought I'd chip in with some advice. I've been a pro bassist for eight years now.

My main job is teaching, which I do at BIMM Bristol (I'm head of bass there, and teach all levels). I encounter students every day who want to be professional bassists and there are four things that continuously bang on about:

    1) Sight reading. If you can read well, you will gig. There are so many opportunities for a reading bassist. As an example, when I left university I went straight to cruise ship work and saw the world. How? Because I could read.
    2) Music Theory. It won't kill your creativity, and will benefit your playing in every way. Learn all you can - you need to be able to talk to musicians in a language they understand.
    3) Walking bass. If you can walk a convincing line over chord changes, it can be very helpful. Not necessarily for playing jazz, but the process of learning how will teach you the fretboard and about chord tones in better detail than you could ever imagine.
    4) Be versatile. If you can competently play in a number of styles with authority then you'll be pretty employable.

There are a few other concerns, such as punctuality, politeness, image, but I consider those to be pretty obvious.

So what do I do? I teach at BIMM, I write a lot of books (I run my own publishing company), I play wedding gigs at the weekend, I tour with Carl Palmer, I occasionally write for Bass Guitar Magazine and i give private lessons. It's a very rewarding career, but it involves a LOT of hard work. It is worth it, but I know when I first went pro and lost the security of a regular wage, there were times when I wondered if it was.

Good luck with it, and be sure to let us all know how you get on.

    Best,
    Stuart

Ironically I was only just looking at the new thread you placed on the affiliates forum after I posted this thread, went to your site and saw it will be out soon.

The revamped website looks really good. Very easy to use, I like it.
Hey,

    Glad you like the site!

Have just spent the evening working on the book and it's just about done.

  13.
Decided to get a little jazzy funky, so dug out the Brother Sister album by the Brand New Heavies. Specifically the first track HAVE A GOOD TIME.

I've got most of it nailed, apart from the little impro bit where the sax does the solo.
I know the whole song revolves around Ab and Db (or the enharmonic equivalants) but my theory is very basic so I'm struggling to identify what key it is in and the relevant scales for the chords.

Sorry if this isn't very clear, but can anyone provide some guidance.
It's in the key of Db and the song revolves around a ii-V progression - Ebm7 - Ab13.

Presumably this will be of interest to you?: http://www.basslinepublishing.com/brand-ne...her-sister.html

Will be released in a few weeks time.

Actually, I wish! The pink one is somewhere in Wales and the blue one went abroad I think. Marcus - has to be pearl blue (as pm'ed!). Yes Stu, the star inlays had LEDs!

    Hey Nick,

Long time no speak! If I had to put money on someone having them it would be you or Morgan!

  17.
The thing is that the albums that I was talking to this guy (who will remain unnamed for now :) ) was talking about only the audience being the original part - and even then all of that has to be trimmed and faded and mixed together. So it turned out to be a studio album with a congregation singing behind it.

and people pay money for what they think they heard on the night!!! Isn't that illegal?! (cue The Funk for legal advice)
I think I even read somewhere that one band had used audience noise from another band's live album (I can't remember who did this, one of the eighties hair metal bands) and recorded the music in the studio. I would think that would be illegal, wouldn't it?

Most live album has a certain number of fixes - Mark King said (in interview I did with him for one of my books) that the vocals on A Physical Presence were doubletracked to add 'weight'. I've got recordings of the original gigs that this album was made from and there is quite a difference once it's all EQ'd nicely and polished.

I also recorded a live album with Carl Palmer last year (unreleased at the moment) and we recorded some fixes in the studio - mainly bass and guitar things that weren't picked up properly.

  18.
Hmmm, tough call. Are those the only options? The reason I ask is because I think this Blue Jaydee is beautiful.
Yeah, that's a nice Jaydee - i think it has star inlays which if I recall had LED's in them?

I'd love to know where Mark's pink and blue Jaydee's went - apparently he auctioned them, but I've never heard of anyone owning them.

    Stu

  19.
series 1 jaydee, being ordered soon...
just got to make the decision on colour soon, would love the signature cherry red, but dad already has one, could go for white but it fades over time and really needs the angels and stars on the neck for it to be complete, or could go with the pink?

    what dya think?

    x
I've got a salmon pink Jaydee, very similar to what Mark King used to have - I specifically wanted that colour as I always liked the look of Mark's bass. It looks absolutely awesome - would be happy to upload some pics if you want to see?

  20.
Hey, is it OK to bump old threads? I didn't want to start a new one. I downloaded these files when you posted them (I was a lurker back then) and I recently found the printed versions in my room. Got playing these two songs again and got addicted to tapping.

So, I was wondering does anybody have any songs like these two? Thanks. :)

PS - Good job with the tab, btw.
I have a book coming out early next year called 'Solo Arrangements for Electric Bass' which contains my arrangement of Beethoven's 'Fur Elise'. You can read about the book under the Coming Soon section at the Bassline Publishing website (www.basslinepublishing.com). I'll try to get a video of this piece done soon so you can check it out.

Sure you've looked into it, but if you like tapping, then Stuart Hamm did a few classical arrangements for bass that were excellent. I can point you in the direction of a tracnscription of 'Prelude in C' if you're interested.

    Hope that helps

    Stuart
