1. Hi all,

I've recently decided to start private teaching again, if that is of interest to anyone here...! I'm based in Barnstaple, North Devon and teach from home on Monday, Thursday and Friday. I can do daytimes or evenings and charge £30 an hour. I am a fully qualified teacher (I'm head of bass at BIMM in Bristol) and have access to a quite extraordinary library of bass books and resources.

I am able to teach pretty much everything, from theory to complex techniques, and beginners are of course welcome.

Anyway, PM me here if interested or drop me an email at [email protected]

    Cheers
    Stuart

  2.
cant add much except that book is really the place to start, which reminds me i should really start, daunting book as there are over 1000 scales but should cover everything.
I'm currently writing a book on scales and modes and what I consider to be the best way to go about learning them. This is a method that I've used in my own teaching for many years, and continue to follow with my classes at BIMM.

The best thing to do is to focus on the major scales. Start with C major - this is the easiest as it contains all the white notes on the keyboard - no sharps or flats. Learn this scale on one string, starting from lots of different places on the neck. Say the notes out loud as you do so. Then work on playing it over one octave in as many ways as you can find using all strings. Do not memorise fretboard patterns. The idea here is that you learn the CONTENT of the scale, not a pattern. Work on this until you're happy with it, then expand to two octaves.

In doing the C major scale you'll also have covered A minor as they are related - they contain the same notes.

Once you have C major and A minor covered, you can work on the next key, G major/Eminor. The order of keys is dictated by The Circle of Fifths.

Modes, harmonic and melodic minors, pentatonics, blues scales etc are ALL derived from the major and natural minor scale. If you learn these in detail first you will be off to a great start.

    Hope that helps,
    Stuart

  3. Yes I am willing. Where are you based? I'm in Bristol quite a bit and will he travelling about a bit in the next few weeks.
Hi Stuart, would you be willing to ship the 4x10? Barnstaple is a bit far for me too travel I'm afraid.

    Easy,

  4.
sorry if I'm missing something very obvious but just to clarify things, are the rack case, tuner and the racklight included in the price of the head or not?
Oops. Thought I had said in the original post, yes they are.

  5. Hi all,

I'm selling my EBS rig and thought I'd post the details here in case anyone is interested. The rig comprises an HD350 Head, and Proline 2x10 and 4x10 cabinets. Details and technical specifications can be easily found on the EBS website (www.bass.se), so I won't post them here.

I've owned the HD350 and 4x10 for about six years and have had many a happy a gig with them. The 2x10 is about a year old.

The HD350 is in great condition, the 410 likewise, save for a small burn on the carpet covering on the lower right side. I can take a pic if anyone needs one. The 210 is in perfect condition as it has mostly been used at home.

    Here's a couple of pictures...

I'm looking for £400 for the HD350, £400 for the 410 and £350 for the 210. The 4U rack case, Korg Tuner and the racklight are included in the sale (racklight is blue, looks great with the rig, although the bulb is blown)

If anyone is interested they can PM me here or email me directly at: [email protected]

    Cheers

  6.
My music room has recently been refurbished at my home in Wallasey and students have enjoyed lessons there. It's a small room but light and comfortable which provides a nice environment for lessons.

I run a Mac based system for music... iTunes and Spotify for quick access to listening material and Logic for recording. It's possible for me to create play-along tracks for students to practise to as well as drum loops and grooves to work with.

If anyone's interested in talking about lessons please get in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Steve
Your music room looks alarmingly like mine. We'd probably get on well.

    Good luck with the lessons.

    http://www.mansons.co.uk/news/news-item/69.html

I understand from Adrian Ashton that the special on both days (from a bass perpective) may be Michael Manring, not every one's cup of tea but might be worth going to see.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY4Ra2KOyas
Adrian did ask me to mention the show to bass chatters. Michael manring will indeed be there, which should be well worth a look. I'll also be there representing Bassline Publishing and doing some demos. It's a great show so hopefully I'll see some of you there!

  8.
I love Jeff, but he's been doing jazz for way to long now and he needs to get back to fusion! Jazz standards bore me and as great as Jeff is, I won't be tuning in!
I agree - I love Jeff's playing and his knowledge of bebop is second to none. But I need to hear more stuff like 'Joe Frazier' and 'Motherlode'.

Still love his solo on 'Manos de Piedra'.

  9.
Nothing new here, but I was doing a bit of Kate Bush tonight ( :) ) and just wanted to post a couple of her tracks featuring John Giblin's tastefully understated fretless playing - (imho, of course  )
At times, if I'm playing fretless, someone will inevitably ask, "oh, d'you know that song by Paul Young...?"
All due respect to Pino but I'll tell them I'd far rather be playing either of these two.

Two of my absolute favourites. I love Kate Bush's music, and these tracks have some superb bass playing on them. I used both at BIMM last year as examples of great fretless playing.

    Must transcribe!

  10. Hi all,

Just wondering if there is anyone on here that knows their way around Flash? I have a small job that needs doing, and don't have time to relearn how to use it myself! If there's anyone that fits the bill, please drop me an email at [email protected]. Looking for someone with experience and some examples that I could look at.

Better still if you're prepared to work for a load of bass books...!

  11.
Yay! Been waiting for this for ages Stu!

Ship the first copy to me :)
Yeah it's taken a while to get this one together! The book itself has been finished for a couple of months, but I've needed some free time in order to practise the pieces up to a recordable standard - but now the BIMM summer term is over I have the time!

There will be a basschat competition once the book is available.

  12. Hi all,

As some of you know, I've been writing a book called Solo Arrangements for Electric Bass for the last couple of years. The book is now finished, and I have finally found the time to start recording the audio files to go with it. Two complete pieces have been uploaded for your listening pleasure - 'Shape of my Heart' (Sting) and 'The Genesis Medley' (Genesis)! To check them out, visit www.basslinepublishing.com and click on the advert for the book half way down the left hand side of the site.

The book should be out in September. The audio files will be available as a free download rather than included on a CD, so I may well upload more as I finish them.

    Enjoy!

  13.
You should be rightly chuffed with the new site Stuart. I had no problems at all with it, it looks great as well.
I found your bio quite interesting. I remember those Axe ads and almost bought one. My first bass came from a small music shop that was in Litchdon Street (just off the square in Barnstaple?), can't remember what it was called. I remember the bass but not the shop's name that is.

Transcriptions are good as well. It's always a treat to find transcripts you can rely on as accurate.

    Cheers

Ahhh, that was Roadrunner music. I remember it from when I was a kid, but it closed before I was a bass player.

Glad you like the site, hope all is well with you.

  14.
Nice Stu.
Nice having the transcriptions, and a great encouragement for the students to have their's posted too.
Enjoyed the sample sound clips too.
Any plans to add more transcriptions over time?

    Cheers,
    John
Thanks John. Yes, I definately intend to add more transcriptions over time. I know that most of my students are working on some over the summer, and I have a few in the pipeline myself. Things are pretty busy right now, but I'll always add more transcriptions as and when I get the chance!

  15.
I may be missing something but the media section just seems to contain photos?
Site works quite well on a blackberry btw
You shouldn't click on Media, you need to hover over it - this will give you a drop down menu: photos, videos, transcriptions, audio.

I'll be interested to know if the drop downs work on the Blackberry.

  16. Hi all,

Just wanted to share with you all my new website - www.stuartclayton.com. It's been designed for me by a great website designer named Laura Kalbag (http://laurakalbag.com) and I'm really pleased with the results.

Under the Media menu you'll find a bunch of transcriptions, including a load of new ones done by my students at BIMM (and given a once-over by me).

    Hope you all like it!
