Sell me one of your UL110 cabs and get a neo 1x12, 2x12 or 1x15.
....what a mad price for such an ugly instrument, only a very serious collecter would consider spending that kinda cash surely....
Mad price and ugly? Yes, but not in the same price league as a 1950's Fender, or as ugly as a Bongo!! If it sounds anything like JG1119 (the Alan Spenner bass) it doesn't matter what it looks like! -
....I have to say that's the first Wal I've seen that didn't have me figuring out if there was some way to buy it and still eat.
Nothing wrong with the tooled leather pickguard or blue burst, just not the two together please....
Not the best colour scheme, I know, but if you ever heard these JG basses you would be eating toast for the next 15 years.
I played the Alan Spenner bass about 8-9 years ago and it was the best bass sound I've yet to hear. They wanted £1000 for it but, at the time, I didn't want a 4 string (kicks himself). Pete Hurley tried to sell his on Ebay about 5 years ago and got no takers at £2000!
This is way over priced even for the first production bass, but there are collectors out there for whom this is just loose change. They just haven't cottoned on to Wal's yet. -
....I was wondering whether anyone had an opinion on the what are the mellowest sounding jazz pickups....
The Bartolini's on my Precision are pretty good, but I think you should also hear some Lindy Fralin Jazz pickups. -
....I'm considering to buy 2 2x10's and a HD350, but I'm a bit undecided on wether to go Proline or Neo....
Proline? You're downsizing, why stop at anything other than Neo. 2 2x10's is a good idea but at about 40lbs each you might also want to look at a neo 4x10 (approx 60lbs) with wheels. My Epifani 4x10 is very easy to move around and my back is not in good shape! I would also look further than EBS! -
Marry a woman with small hands.

Check out Bass Direct. Mark is now stocking Auralex Gramma isolators and at a better price than Studiospares.

I've used both Aguilar and Bergantino 12's, and while I liked the sound of the GS112 it was too heavy! My AE210 weighs 40lbs, less than the GS112, and the AE112 is even less than that. Various band members have told me that the Bergantino cabs are the best sounding so far.
These cabs are all good but all have differences so, really, you should listen to them before deciding. If they are in stock, the Aguilar, Epifani and Schroeder cabs will be at the Bass Gallery, Dr Bass at RIM in Luton and Bergantino, Genz Benz and Markbass at Bass Direct near Coventry. Then there is Zoot in Essex. What a great day out!! -
Why a combo? With £1000 you could do so much better!
There is a Mesa Boogie 4x10 on Ebay right now. Get that for £300-£400 and spend the rest on an Ampeg, Markbass, Thunderfunk or GK head. That rig would crush any combo. -
....Just ordered a Streamer Stage I (as some of you may know!) and obviously it has the MEC P/J pup set up. I was thinking of maybe replacing them with EMG's or something of that ilk....
I don't understand this. Why bother to buy a new bass and then spend money on changing significant parts of it as soon as it arrives! Why didn't you buy a bass that you liked in the first place! -
The usual answer; DR Lo-Rider, MH5-130 45, 65, 85, 105, 130. They're the best 5 string set I've used.
....I'm looking at castors for my cab.... they need to have a single screw hole fixing where the rubber feet already are.
In my view the best solution is to get 3" or 80mm castors/wheels attached by a plate and get 2 with brakes. Put the brakes at the front for easy access.
It might be better to get a trolley from Homebase or B&Q. -
I'm confused!! After watching 2 different bands on 2 different gigs rushing around trying to sort out the same problem I thought I knew what to do when playing with an electricity supply from a generator!!
I spoke to a BBC electrician at the weekend and he said you don't need an earth on a generator supply because it is a closed system and all the equipment is local to the generator..... BUT, the electricity regs say you should have an earth every time! What do you do?
I guess the safest option is to go for the earth and use RCD plugs. -
The blue translucent gets my vote (looks just like my Lakland), but you need some nice wood to show it off. My second choice would be the Sadowsky 3 tone sunburst.

Don't...... get a bank loan. It'll be cheaper in the long run!
....Did Wal ever make a 6 string, I'm sure I saw one once in a shop called the Embassy in Mansfield....
Pete Stevens didn't make many but they were definitely in the catalogue. Even Steve Chesney could only rustle up about 4 pictures of 6 string Wals when his Wal site was up and running. -
Curley leads weren't even any good in the 70's, they used very cheap wire and plugs, but, like all antiques, they really don't stack up against their modern equivalent.
Back then, I remember that speaker leads were made of bell wire! Leads are so much better these days! -
....How much did custom Wal's cost then? As much as the current second hand prices?....
Nine years ago Pete Stevens quoted about £2500 for a Custom 5 string, depending on what I wanted him to do, but I found a very nice American Walnut 5 string in a local shop for a lot less so I never got mine made! As most Wal owners seem to look after their basses, I think this makes the current second hand prices very reasonable. -
Saw Robert Cray last night at the Shepherds Bush Empire and his bass player was using...... Hartke!! Not an Ampeg in sight!

Keb Mo is at the Jazz Cafe in Camden this coming Sunday (20th July) and Monday (21st July). This guy is great and shouldn't be missed.
....Smallest was the Mau Mau Bar in Portobello Road which is a bit like playing on a dinner table....
The Blues Bar (Ain't Nothin' But...) makes the Mau Mau look like a football field! -
On both gigs we had an additional problem. Although we ran a daisy chain of extension leads to a proper power supply, the house (marquee) lights were still running from the unearthed generator. Potentially this was a very dangerous situation so we had to make sure we went nowhere near their lights while we were playing.
Wal's...

All this talk about Wal's made me get mine out for a covers band gig last night. I haven't used it much since getting the Lakland, but in a full, thickly carpeted room and using the Thunderfunk through the Bergantino cabs the sound was just great. The bass was clear, rich, full and warm, the mids were the same but punchier and the high's .... well I don't really do high's! After that experience I shall be using the Wal a lot more in the future.
