Ahh yes, the other, often overlooked role of the bass player in a band - "band parent/guardian"

I've carried fuses since the 70's and batteries since the 90's.

    Need once always carry.

Over the years, I've bailed out several guitarists and PA's.

Question for those who take two basses to a gig: do you take one just as a spare or do you use both?

I have not had a gear failure in 20 years, but still I take 2 of everything to every gig and they are all #1's. I can use either bass or either amp depending on what comes out of the car first. If one cab goes down the other can cover. I'm currently carrying 3 full sets of leads.

IMO there's no point in playing a great #1 bass and then needing to use a POC backup. For me the backup has to be as good as the #1.

  3. The volume difference between an 8 ohm cab and a 4 ohm cab is minimal.  The difference between 1 cab and 2 cabs is huge.

There are heavy and light amps and cabs. You've got to the stage in life where weight is important, so do this job properly.

There are 20-30lb 112 cabs out there which will blow "standard" 40-50lb 212 cabs out of the water. I haven't heard a bad D class amp yet.

  4. In the late 80's I replaced the pickups in my old Precision with Bartolini. The improvement in the sound was amazing, 1000% better, like the difference between black and white and Technicolor. After this success I added a Bart pre amp and, disappointingly, the improvement was minimal!!

I'd always upgrade the pick up first, but I'd only change them if I knew I could get a better tone out of the replacement.

  5. I'm done. I only need 2 basses. I played a Jazz with rounds and a PJ with flats for most of the last decade.

Unfortunately a back issue means I've got to find a lightweight replacement for the Jazz. So far, none of the basses I've tried have been "the one". I didn't expect replacing a favourite bass to be this hard.

  6. This year I've looking for a special lightweight bass. I bought 4 (Cort, Ibanez, Lakland, Sandberg), 1 amp (TH700), 1 pedal (Sadowsky SBP-1), Mono Vertigo, and Sleeve gig bags, a strap and 2 sets of Dunlop strap locks.

A busy year. All very good purchases, but none of the basses have made themselves indispensable, so I'll probably sell them all next year, and try again.

. . . . The only thing that slightly bothers me from the reviews,  is the lack of out and out bottom end. I have never had that problem with a BF cab. However, the ability to hear yourself, even when right on top of the LFSys cab, is a huge plus point.

I heard several LFSys cabs at the SE Bass Bash. IMO they are worth investigating.

There is no "lack of bottom end". There is plenty of bass but it is tightly controlled which eliminates much of the boom and woolliness you get on many gigs.
