  1. Wow, looking at the dates bandied around my Kestrel could have been a ‘prototype’ for the model produced under that name? I know it was one of the 1st 100 instruments he made (dated 1981).

Sports the single Kent Armstrong & still sounds amazing! Has this ‘oink’ I’ve not heard on another bass. With the through neck I can’t get the action as low as I’d like but I’m not usually up the dusty end!

That doesn't surprise me, Yamaha's 'show deals' at the UK Guitar Show were the same prices that all the retailers normally sell at!🤣

I know what you mean. I think it’s back to old fashioned haggling there though. I was looking at mixers (trying to get something with 4 busses so we can all have our own monitor feed) and he came down from £450 to £377 as soon as I showed him what it was on the internet, plus offered to throw in a soft case.

There's a Yamaha shop in London?!

Do they have any of the new Ampeg Venture stuff to play with?!

Oxford Street end of Wardour St. Very nice people - Gabriel & Ritchie even let this old man use their staff toilet!

They had quite a lot of Ampeg gear but not sure if they had what you want. Give em a call 02074324400.

Gibson Garage is just the other side of Oxford Street & in the middle is Tongue & Brisket who do the most amazing Salt Beef Sandwiches!

    Day out….

Thomann will have stock in 4-5 weeks and it'll cost £190.

Just been in Yamaha London. They said “mid April & RRP £208” but did imply that actual cost would be lower.

  5. Hola!

I appreciate that this thread could still be correct, but it’s also quite old - like the P bass I just inherited (a 78/9 but from someone who doesn’t play, not passed)!

I’ve not taken it to bits yet but it’s exhibiting the same ‘symptoms’ - the pickups can be lifted when the screws are raised but they don’t stay up. The bass has been stored in a wardrobe for like 20 years so I’m guessing the foam has perished (if it was fitted with foam?).

As this is now (arguably) a vintage bass I’d like to sort it in a sympathetic way so….

…..is there a way to fix this that wasn’t around in 2010 or do I just do what’s suggested above?

    Any help gratefully received.

Hi guys, what are you thinking on this , in need of cleaning and maybe some restoration as it’s been in storage for apparently 54 years 😧, what’s it worth and what would be the value once restored

  7. Nice idea but I’m fine with it. A very young Andy Warnock had a look at it like 30 years ago and sorted it switching on and off - there was a time when the active circuit didn’t work. Indeed, I’m sure he fixed it but something in the intervening years could have changed things. I don’t use it enough to be able to work out what needs tweaking. Just gives the old girl character…

  8. Here is my MC 924. I was 21 in the early 80’s and I had a choice between this and a British alternative as a pressy. Sometimes I regret not choosing the Wal…

As others have said it’s weighty! This one works passive & active but it seems to drain the battery whether the switch is on or off. Gets taken to gigs as the spare but have recorded with it recently.

    Still sounds great….
