I feel compelled to comment as in Uni, me and my mates got together to play My Generation (as well as Citizen Erased, Song 2 and Smoke On The Water) at the end of year music open Mic type thing (me on bass).

Now this was only the 2nd time I've ever gigged with not even a proper band and I decided that for the benefit of the audience (and to save embarrassment) I would either learn the solo properly (or as best as I could) or concede that I can't play it and let someone else who can.

My point is, that to a certain extent you can't just stand on a stage and play anything if it sounds, quite frankly, awful. If someone said to me "learn YYZ for a gig next week" I would say "no, I'm not good enough, find someone who can. If I play it will be a car crash performance."

I don't want to pick on this person, but as an audience member there is only so much I can appreciate the fact that "at least he tried" point of view. It seems either he just couldn't be arsed, or he's out of depth, which you've got to admit to yourself or you'll never really progress as a player.

So there I am playing my Washburn T14 bass (passive) when suddenly the sound cuts out. This is the stupid part. I adjusted the middle knob (I have three) which I'm pretty sure affects the tone, so am I right in thinking this is a bridge selector, as I have a P pup and a split pup. Basically I concluded (dubiously) that one the pups decided to die on me, as all three knobs now seem to be volume and I can only get one tone. To clarify the sound still works but I no longer have sound when I used to have the three knobs in a given position that I used to play with

So I decide to take some things off my bass (for the first time), and went to inspect the pups. So i unscrew them, but as the quality of the screw is pathetic (and I possibly use the wrong size), I stripped them (i.e. f***ed the heads up) so I can't get them off, and a couple are half up, and will not screw up/down. The wires in the back looked alright.

First of all, does anyone know what the problem could be because I'm probably most definitely wrong. Second of all does anyone have good advice at removing stripped screws? My final objective would be to basically gut out the guitar and replace with new pups & bridge

This is the first time I've done this, I have no friends or family that know anything about basses so I'm basically learning from doing and by internet (albeit not very successfully)

Right, so I think I've decided on the guitar that I want, a Yamaha BB614 (or BB414). I was going to buy A fender Jazz, but I thought the extra £300ish could go to a BOSS GT-6B and beer money. Anyway I want to buy a Yammy but I'm a student so I want to pay as little as possible, but still want to buy new.

So how do I go about this then. Do I just buy one from say GAK.co.uk or similar websites to get one cheap, yet may face a several week wait and then disappointment, or do I ring around all the guitar shops in my local area and try to haggle the best deal, and play them off each other?

Since I have little experience, what percentage off the list price is a good deal (10%?, 20%?, more!?) Are big shops (Dawsons, Sound Control) more likely to offer lower prices than smaller independent shops?

If you don't mind, could you experienced lot share me your tales of purchasing and your advice, because it would be much appreciated

Due to upgrading to a BOSS GT-6B (hopefully) I no longer have a need for my Zoom B2.1u multi-fx pedal. Gigged once and practiced on a few times, but still in perfect working order.

I tried a Sub today in Sound Control for first time and I was pretty impressed, and if I remember rightly, your based in Widnes aren't you?

About the dodgy jack, what work would be needed and how much would it cost? (sorry I have no idea). For the price your asking I'm very tempted

Just want to ask a question. I went Sound Control Salford for the first time today looking to try a couple of US/Japanese Fender Jazzes, but they did not have a single Jazz, not even a Squire. Is this normal for a shop this size? They did have a Yammy BB614 that I was impressed with. Does anyone have one and would you recommend it, or the BB414?

OK, so they did seem to have loads of Warwicks (a wall load in fact) but I didn't think everyone planned to spend over £1k on a bass, especially not me, being a 20 year old student.

Can someone recommend me any good guitar shops for bass guitars in the northwest as I have no idea, especially ones that have a decent variety of bass guitars

About buying second hand, I was a bit put off by the idea as I have a feeling that a brand new bass would be so much better (I don't know why). I have been looking on the For Sale section on here and will continue doing so. Also I may venture on ebay but I've heard from here that things tend to go pear shaped.

I was also looking on GAK.co.uk cos they seem pretty cheap (obviously P+P has to be accounted), and has anyone dealt with them and what do you think?

Right, my 21st is coming up and I'm after a decent bass guitar to replace my Washburn T14 Taurus (my first!)

Due to lack of car, and the fact that I don't live in a big city I've yet to go to a big shop (sound control etc) so I've only manage to try the very few basses in my local area, which is basically a Yammy BB414, Fender Jazz Mexican, Fender Jazz Aerodyne & a RockBass something

My question I want to ask, is to you veterans, is a US Jazz (around the 600-700 mark) worth the extra 300 quid over a Mexican Jazz. I wasn't that impressed by the Aerodyne but will it be worth the effort to try a few US Jazz's?

Also when trying basses although I've been playing for three years now I still don't actually know what to look for. I am in a blues/rock band at the moment (i think) but I also like to play pretty much any style with other students at Uni, so I'm looking for versatility.

Overall I'm useless, please help

isI know this t not techincally a general bass discussion topic BUT it is probably the most read by everyone. I sold a BP80 on the old basstalk about 3-4 weeks ago and a guy called Rich paid for it through paypal. He told me to hold onto it though until he returned from holiday so I sent him a message with my contact details so he could contact me once he got back

As the website changed to this one, the details could have gone missing and he could still be wanting the pedal, but might have no way of telling me, and I have his money.

His name on basstalk was Rich, does anyone know if he is on here, or does anyone know who he is in general?

I'm on the verge of joining a band in Uni, that play Blues and Funk - Hendrix, BB King, Howlin Wolf etc, and I've realised that I have yet to change the strings on my bass even though I've had it for 18 months and have been playing with stock strings since.

Basically, I've been playing a lot for the past 18 months but in bedroom, and a few half arsed jams so I've never really cared about the tone of my guitar, but I think its time to buy some decent strings. I simply do not really understand a lot of the technical side of the bass guitar, I basically read tabs and play. so I need advice badly cos I know fook all.

What strings would you more experienced lot recommend? I play a basic Washburn T14 so its hardly packs a nice tone, but because I plan to play slap and 12 bar blues type stuff, I want to treat myself to some new strings that may improve the sound. You have to forgive my stupidity as words like Roundwood or flatwood, or 105 super slinky gauge blah blah have literally zero meaning to me as I havent experimented with other basses, so please treat me like an idiot
