I`ve used a pick ever since I started learning. Have only really learned to play with my fingers in the last year or so, but in a band situation I prefer the attack a pick gives. I tend to have a thuddy, warm eq, and also lock in with the drums so the percussive attack of the pick is ideal. I use Dunlop 1.14mm triangular picks (3 for the price of one, makes sense).

    Very similar to my situation.

I use a pick every gig, just find I can guarantee speed and accuracy when required. Especially in a fast-paced R'n'B band!

I use fingerstyle at home most of the time now, just for practice to essentially 'have' the skill. In a different band, I would love to gig with it in the future - however, I always find the tone I get is so muddy, whereas a pick gives clarity and definition. I'm not a heavy player, so it works pretty well.

Jim Dunlop 1mm Tortex for me - great pick!

  2. More deeply distressing news - set cut short as Lem couldn't continue.......

Really hope he's back on form soon.

  3. I'm still driving my Hyundai Tucson, 2.0d 4WD - 2 years - my longest ever vehicle! I would say it's an SUV though, not technically a car.

Bass goes in the rear foot-well, 2 x Markbass (Amp and Cab) in the boot. No seats down, just straight in. All rear windows tinted, so you can't see any gear at all.

Going to keep it until it blows up, really. No cash to change for the forseeable - so although the MPG is poor (28/30) I'm kind of stuck......but it's a superb gear-lugger.

When I do change, it'll be the Hyundai Veloster. Check them out, the looks put most cars to shame. As for getting the gear in it.....I'd find a way!

  4. Interesting how SC's solo debut was 2 years before Jaco's, but it's the latter which is always raved about.

It's funny how much on internet forums you read about Jaco (whom I also love), but much less about Stanley.

I was only 13 when Jaco died, so was not actually listening or bassing at the time -I wonder if it had been SC that was not longer with us, and if Jaco was, would their roles in popularity be reversed?

FWIW, I think both solo debut's are groundbreaking.

  5. SD are a band I first 'tried' to get a few years ago - and just couldn't!

For some reason, they didn't click with me, just found the music to be impenetrable.

Forward fast to last year - saw the 'Citizen' box set (basically all the original albums) on download for about £13.

Though I'd try again - after all, I did like a few tracks last time I tried.....

Must be an age thing - I loved it! Since then, I've really absorbed the records. Can't fault nearly anything!

Agree on 'The Royal Scam' - maybe my fav as well. Only one I still struggle with ever so slightly is 'Pretzel Logic' - just find that weaker than the others, maybe because they're so strong.

'Gaucho' too - amazing vibe on that.

So the message is persevere - maybe everyone gets to SD in the end! :)

  6. Bass arrived - and returned. One of the unlucky ones.

Weight-wise, it was about the same as a Land Rover towing a trailer full of overweight Elephants....... :(

Managed to find a used US P instead! :)

  7. I've recently acquired another P. Shouldn't have sold the last one really!

I do find them so easy to play - and they do fit in anywhere with very little fuss. I also find that wherever I play (pubs/cubs, wherever..!), I can always hear myself - something not always so easy with other, often more expensive basses.

I resisted a P for years as I thought they were a little 'obvious' - more fool me. A bass that well recorded and performed with....there's good reason. :)

  8. Got it back just now (luckily off work today as I didn't know it was coming!).

What can I say? Fantastic job. Card confirms it's had a new neck and a complete set-up, and couriered here for free.

It plays amazingly well, so I'm a happy customer. Only dropped it off a week ago last Friday.

Full marks to Fender - I can't imagine Rickenbacker/Rosetti (who I've had dealings with) doing this. Last problem I had with a brand new 4004 I was told with the problem it had, 'that's the way it's supposed to be'!

  9. Today it's playing brilliantly!

The tweak did the trick - little move back, then a bit of push forward.....strings are perfectly positioned for me - very nice low action.

Even better, not a hint of string buzz at all. I've had luthier set-ups that I've been unhappy with, but this I like! :)

  10. Excellent - will do - thanks.

I did give the TR a very small tweak earlier as the bow was quite excessive at the 12th. Very stiff, but a small turn back to loosen, then forward (as my old luthier always suggested) to tighten a fraction seems good so far.

Will leave overnight - play it a bit too - and report the results tomorrow!

  11. Thanks Lozz - it's a great bass (will post pics once all ready). Not my first P, but I should have never have got rid of the others......

I've just stuck a set of my usual 45-105's on there, and although the strings seem nicely playable (maybe a tad floppy), the action seems to have raised at the 12th by a fair bit.

Suppose best thing is to leave it overnight, play it a bit, and the tighten the truss rod a fraction tomorrow? I thought the heavier gauge meant loosening the TR?

  12. I've just grabbed a gorgeous used Precision from Bass Direct.

Bass has been fully set up, and Mark restrung it with Smith strings (these are new to me) Nickels, 40-100.

    I usually use D'addario Nickels, 45-105.

Question is, will changing over throw the set up out?

Also, I haven't cranked it up yet - but I was thinking that the current gauge is a bit low for P bass thump?

Also, if a slight tweak is needed, would it be a 'lefty loosey' to reduce tension? Bit reluctant as it plays brilliantly right now.
