Those saddles were used on the Classic models. Hollow saddles which don't allow you to drop the screws as low - which translates into - you can't technically reach the same low action if it's needed, without shimming the neck. I have a 2010 2 band standard model and I don't have the hollow saddles. I'm still very very curious about the 2018 models.. Haven't tried them yet.

And by correcting the weak G - I think it has more to do with the pickup location, it's just physically not in the place where the thinner strings would have more natural low end. What they did though is align the pole pieces so that the strings are centered over them. Perhaps preamp tweaks did something too. In any case, those 2018 models sound tamer in comparison to the older ones.

Hey don't get me wrong I love my Classic Stingray and would never sell it, it is just the small niggely things that get on my nerves.

Has anyone used a Spectracomp and an EBS Multicomp? How do they compare?

I alternate between the two of them and I do like them both. I did find that in my situation the EBS works better with drive type pedals, and I guess I could get the Spectracomp to work better with them  but being lazy I can't be bothered to adjust the parameters. I did try the EBS as a limiter at the end of the chain with the Spectracomp at the beginning but it doesn't make a great limiter and I use my MXR M87 for that purpose.

  3. You really don't need to have special strings on a ABG at all. My ABG came with Phosphor Bronze which gave out too much finger noise, so I replaced them with La Bella White Nylon Tapewounds. The way to string them is to bend the ball end at around an inch to 2 inch angle so it grips onto the underside of the body, with the ball end facing towards the neck inside the guitar Then just locate the pins and you should be good. By not doing this the pins will just fly out when you tune the string up to pitch. The bend in the string will act like a hook stopping it from popping the pin out when tuning.

  4. Led Zeppelin were the biggest plagiarists in the history of Rock, especially from obscure Blues artists. Ultimately it gives a whole new meaning to "The Song Remains The Same".

You mean the troll post which just alleges shoddy design. That person clearly didn't read the responses in that thread which explain the situation. Once again you're making suggestions about consistency of production without any basis in fact - I don't believe you've even played one of these basses - basic trolling in my view!!

LOL........I don't think you know the true meaning of a troll, your'e just playing the troll card.

    I rest my case!

I do have a problem with your assertion that there is a problem on this. I have no problem with either of my Specials getting the action I want - and it's pretty low.

Now if you want ultra low you may need to either shim or change the saddle screws on the central saddles for the shorter version (apparently EBMM has supplied these to one or two people who have asked). The point is, apparently, that it's not possible to have saddle screws protruding through the tops of the saddles for user safety reasons, which seems perfectly reasonable.

As I said my basses have acceptably low action without shimming or changing the saddle screws.

The weak G string phenomena has never been replicated to my knowledge in any recording despite vociferous people having been asked to do so. As far as I'm concerned I could certainly replicate it, six feet in front of my speaker cabinet if I wanted to, but that is true of any bass guitar and particularly those renowned for G string dead spots in certain areas.

For me, Stingrays do not have this issue unless I misuse the bass and amp EQ and of the ten I currently own I don't have any issue at all with this - but there again maybe my playing style, string choices, amp and EQ settings play a part. Perhaps my hearing is less bass heavy - who knows - there are so many variables.

Go and take a look at the most recent thread over on the EB Forum which proves my point. I agree that you can have a problem with someones remarks if they are false, but if they are true then you have just got to accept it and move on. This kind of thing also proves that there is no uniformity in the manufacturing process at EB.

I am way too ham fisted to worry about that, two minutes on a bench grinder would solve it should you really need to.

It would be easier to add a shimm to the neck than getting tools out to correct something that is so small.

Like I said all mine are five string so don't have the weak G, I'm still waiting to hear about the problem with the saddles?

They have corrected the weak g string on the 4's, but they still use the same saddles on the Specials where you cannot get a very low action via the saddles. There are plenty of posts about this on the Internet just Google it.I would have thought that you would have known this.

  9. I like the look of the Old Smoothie especially the Chocolate Burst, but its tone just does not do it for me as it is very mellow, very bottom end. I thought that when they brought it out it would be the closest to the original 76 Ray but that is just not the case. You would be better with a Classic to get you near to that Vintage Stingray tone.

Not your thread, the NBD thread by RedVee , He said that EBMM are lacking in quality yet in his thread the Rick has most of the niggles they come with that need putting right.

I have stated that Rickenbackers have their flaws, but I have also stated that Stingrays have their flaws too. This is not a thread about which Bass has the most flaws 4003's or Stingrays it is about Stingrays being overrated.

Obviously with some fanboys it goes in one ear and comes out of the other.

As I mentioned earlier that most people known for playing them are known more for playing other things, so lemmy, yes, but Macca? Hofner. Phil Lynot? Mirror pick-guard P Bass.

Well the same can be said for other makes of Bass Guitar.

  12. I believed for thirty years all of the rubbish that a Rickenbacker is the worse designed Bass ever built. I finally took the plunge this year and purchased a 2018 4003. There have been improvements to the 4003 with the most important for me being the updated twin truss rod design.I now ignore my Fenders and EB's, as it is the Ric that I only want to play.

OP, did you get the treble bezel? If so, how did you like it?

Yes I got the Cove Smooth Chrome which has an indentation thumb rest. I also straightened the Bridge pickup. It looks and sounds great, I am glad I finally purchased one.

  14. Any pics of the Ric?

I have a 2 band band Stingray Classic that has the usual flaws which I hardly play though I do like its tone. I have just recently purchased a Rickenbacker 4003 which I can't put down and I prefer it over my Stingray. I don't understand how people can dislike Rics they are a fantastic Bass.

  15. This thread is not about Rickenbackers which have their flaws, it is about Stingrays so stop trying to divert away from the subject matter. People can see for themselves if they go onto TB where they can view the 3 Stingray fanboys on this thread who defend EB to the hilt and never admit that there are any flaws on any EB Basses at all. It is trollish behaviour, and we all know their usernames.

I got it in a trade along with something else I actually wanted. I didn’t like anything about it.

Can you explain why is it that you take great pleasure in trashing Rics ad Infinitum but can’t handle it when someone slags Musicman basses? Don’t you think that’s a bit sad?

Because they are the same people that frequent every Bass forum and who defend EB whenever anybody states a true fact about poor EB quality control. Their names are well known wherever they frequent.
