  1. …according to bass forums at least. ; ) Uh oh! I mix cabinet sizes. (Two 10’s and a 12” work best for me. ) I like the Sonic Stomp (But it has to go straight in, not in the effects loop). I’ve had boutique and custom made instruments and I think that the extra cost is just paying for the fact that they can’t sell as many each moth as a brand name. I don’t think BOSS pedals suck. I see no need for an octave pedal. I can’t really hear the difference regarding what order a pedal goes in the chain. I hear the difference in wood type. I can swear I feel the difference between a rosewood fingerboard and a maple one. I think except in certain cases, (and on certain basses) flats tend to be dull and muddy and sound dead. I prefer my Ibanez in passive mode. I think a low B is rarely needed. (I have one though). It took me years to discover the Tech 21 Sams Amp. I think Ricks are overpriced, but I have one anyway. Just my opinion of course. Does anybody do something that is supposedly “wrong” according to the consensus?
  2. It's funny, on Reach out, Benadette, Glady's Knights Grapevine, the bass is WAY up front. And then on some tracks like Dancing in the Streets, it's invisible. I think it was random mixing choices depending on other factors. But yeah, they didn't have the control (compressors, limiters) that are now available.
  3. Some thoughts -- As for the bass, they each have a character. No one can tell you what you're going to like the most. That's up to you. I like the MarkBass heads. They're small, powerful and uncolored. They produce the sound of the bass you're playing. I mix speakers, (which everyone says is a no-no) but it works for me. After going through dozens of options I settled on a two 10" Hartke and a one 12' Bergantino. I f i need any more than that, I go through the P.A.
  4. If I may -- my attempt at getting the Jamerson sound -- though a bit more modern and more "up front." It's a P bass (A 1987- 62" reissue to be exact) with very dead strings and some tissue paper squished between the back cover and the strings. I always loved this part and felt it was criminally under mixed. I fixed that. lol
  5. The VT version , to me, seems more like a distortion pedal, whereas with the Sans Amp you can dial in just a touch. Yes, it does take away some mids but I think that's emphasized by the fact that it adds so much highs and lows.
  6. I've never been a fan of overdrive on bass. I like a clean sound where the notes are clear. Yet, there was a sound that certain people got that always eluded me. Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Steve Harris, Chris Squier all had it with different playing styles. It was crunchy but not distorted. Tons of tone , but not an EQ'd sound. I assumed it was a boutique tube amp of some sort. Then I discovered the Tech 21. 20 years after it came out. DOH! Anyone ever discover something way after the fact and want to kick themseleves for not knowing sooner?
  7. Sounds like Jamerson to me, but Carol can get funky. Here she is with Joe Pass on guitar!
  8. Jamerson's sound isn't really an overdriven sound, it' sounds more like it's red-lighting the panel! His bass also sounds a little out of tune. Still...it kills.
  9. We Are Family -- a standard for every working wedding band and I don't think I've ever heard anyone play it right.
