I think that the concept of a double flat comes from the need to use each note name once and once only in a scale in that key. So if you have already used the E (as an Eb), the next note up has to be an F something.

    David

The way I did it also only used each note once and without using double of anything. Never mind, let's have double sharps and triple flats. "This next song is in F###, now that's jaaazz - oww!"

Not knowing the difference between a Gb and an F# can really play havoc with band communication.

I was once trying to teach a guitarist a tune and when I said play Gb he just looked at me blankly. That was in a heavy rock trio.

I would translate that to F# and pick the one that worked best for the passage. I just have to commit to sharps or flats for general usage and not both at the same time, I can translate but it takes processing I'm using up just being in a screwed up world.

Yep. Fb AKA plain old E. I get that everything can be pushed to the Nth degree

    ..but..... really.....

Agreed, and what the hell is it with "double flat"? Really?! Really?!! That's surely just pretentious bull crap! Maybe it means something on an instrument built to take into account micro-tonal variations, but that doesn't seem to be a large pool at all.

  4. So, if I'm playing in that theoretical key, I'm playing what? E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, and D#? I don't think in flats when I already have other terminology that works just fine for the instrument I have - though I understand how to apply flats to bass*, it just complicates things and my autistic brain can't be doing with undue complexity.

*Do correct me if I'm wrong, that would genuinely be appreciated.

    Pedal board - Rev ?

I want to know that I can use my pedalboard to smite down my enemy should someone try mugging me on my way home from a gig, rather than give them a muffled slap from a sofa cushion - but hey, maybe you're more into suffocating your assailants; you do you.

Slightly smaller board than previously. I changed my vintage Mutron (which necessitated a loop switch due to leaky bypass) with the Mutron III+ which I prefer in many ways.

It was a challenge to fit everything underneath but it all fits (after lots of mucking about). There's a Broughton HPF (you can adjust the knob through a hole in the side of the board), Warm Audio DI, MXR comp, power supply and junction box...

Ah, Comrade you are really rocking out with that Cold War themed board, yes?

If it helps, I don't know anything about Jaco apart from "he was a famous (fretless) bass player" and I've no real desire to find out.  If I've heard him play on something it was an accident.

When it comes to famous fretless bassists, I prefer Mick Kahn of Japan, personally - now there was someone to make me lust after a fretless and possibly a Wal mk1 while I'm at it. Alas neither my bn balance now my talent permit me that option.

But Jaco's nephew (David Pastorius) is another top pro bass player, playing around Florida with Pat Travers, Eric Gales, among others. He seems quite happy with just 4 strings!

Honestly, Jaco "only ever needing a 4" is to me, a good enough reason to play anything but a four out of spite. And yes, that's as someone who just plays fours - I just find there's something quite arrogant about comparing everyone to Jaco. Not everyone has reverence for his music, and that's not saying we're better, we're just not him and I don't care to try. That being said, most of bass influences are or were 4 string players, they also almost always played some form of Fender and with a pick but why be limited to what players were doing 40-45 years ago if we don't want to be? Sorry, tangent.

Ok so it's a six in the cartoon, but the point stands. FWIW, I play 5s but I certainly don't consider myself even remotely superior to 4 players. Not a jot. We all play what we feel we need, to serve the way we want to play the music we want to play. Doesn't matter if it's a 13-string coffee table or a 2-string played with a slide (RIP Sandman). Animosity is absurd and counterproductive, and best left to guitarists. :D970E0763-71BB-44B3-9948-6E90ED98645D.jpeg.5a0ae91835cf223b8cb48d298e7fba20.jpeg

Daaamn! Bart plays a right-handed 6 string Warwick Thumb and he's a lefty! Wait, why's there a photo of Homer in a spacesuit on the classroom wall?

  10. I recently switched to playing in D standard on my main bass and drop D on my other. I've never played a 5, but don't think I'd get along with the thicker neck or extra weight*, still I've always wanted some extra low notes** hence the recent switch. I hardly ever play above the 12th fret anyway so I've not exactly lost any upper register.

    * Though I suspect my Schecter Riot probably weighs about the same as the 5 string version of my Schecter SLS Evil Twin would, but the Riot gets used on fewer songs.

** Oh yes, there's a spot of 5er envy, but this is a good balance for me.

  11. The people saying good things about the Helix 70s chorus - I believe that's the one a bassist friend of mine has used since she switched over to a full Helix set-up and having heard her playing through it, it does sound really good. It wasn't the only effect in the signal chain but it was very much present.

  12. I've just always liked the EHX sound, so when I decided to get rid of my Small Clone, it was for a Bass Clone - smaller package, more sound sculpting ability and that's a win in my book. I wouldn't be averse to trying other choruses but I'd want to have a good try before I buy.

Just been thinking about preamp/DI boxes that have headphone & Aux inputs. With the likes of EBS, Ampeg, TC, GK, Broughton, Laney, Mesa, Genzler, and now Aguilar, offering headphone / Aux inputs, don't you agree that the likes of Tech 21 and MXR are lagging behind in this area? It's becoming more of a crowded marketplace for sure, but I wonder if either of those have something in the pipeline in this regard. More bassists than ever seem to be using IEMs or needing a swiss army knife preamp/DI with headphone / aux for silent practice, so whilst there are plenty of options out there, I'm also a little surprised that some companies are yet to offer anything as such.

If I had to choose just one addition for the VTBass, it would likely be an effects loop (after the drive section) over a headphone out - though that would certainly be nice.

I always look at the interesting boards on here and think it's time for some exotic modulation or something rather than just a board full of preamps and drives.

I just think I've never really gotten my head around time based stuff or flangers etc and how to dial them in rather than not liking them.

Perhaps I'll start with an octave pedal and go from there. I really enjoyed the the MV OFF1, having fuzz made it a little more palatable even if the tracking wasn't incredible.

I see a lot of bassists going nuts of drives, distortions and fuzzes but personally, whilst I like a bit of drive, for me the chorus is the must have effect.

I just looked at flatwounds. £90 for a five string extra long scale set!

Damn! That feels like a big price difference from what I'd expect to pay for standard four string flats (that aren't Thomastik), even at heavy gauge. What brand were you looking at?
