Only if he has other instruments than basses - he may need to buy an electric guitar to stay in 😈

Well, "he" is a she and no, she doesn't own other instruments. I traded my keyboard in last year along with most of my pedals for an HX Effects.

Buying straplocks implies that you've bought a bass. Surely nobody would buy a bass without immediately buying straplocks for it?

I don't have straplocks on either my current basses, but for now, as I'm not gigging or rehearsing with others, I'm not getting them installed. Plus, only my secondary bass has a problem staying on the strap.

The people saying good things about the Helix 70s chorus - I believe that's the one a bassist friend of mine has used since she switched over to a full Helix set-up and having heard her playing through it, it does sound really good. It wasn't the only effect in the signal chain but it was very much present.

I was wrong, it's the Liquifier in the Helix she uses, and since that post I've also switched over to an HX unit and do like the Liquifier the most (my settings are somewhat different the aforementioned friend, though). I've been trying it out in front of a very mild delay (the Elephant Man).

I think I've navigated Christmas successfully. The only music thing I was given was a book with Green Day bass scores.  I'll claim immunity under the “Educational purchases, ie tutorial books, lessons, anything that furthers your playing is permitted” allowance on the basis that I've only ever played “ Basket Case” and "American idiot“, that I played both from chord sheets (and didn’t play as per the score, so it has already educated me) and that I didn’t tune down for “ Basket Case". Here's a picture of "Basket Case“ score ( just to show it does exist and in case anyone wants to take it to a judicial review 😁).

I'm confident about the next week😜

Yeah, that seems legit - I wouldn't call it gear either.

  5. The last gig I went to was Rhombus, Black Riders Cult, and Dhampyres in Leeds on Saturday. I know, goth bands most people won't have the vaguest idea about but worth a listen if you like your music on the darker side as I do, and it's good to give a shout out to smaller bands.

How...How does one achieve that status, that I would love to know

I think I've achieved something akin to that. I can look at basses casually but other than a custom build, almost nothing really comes close to being an upgrade from what I have - which is above both my needs, ability to afford and my skill. As for things like effects - I just got an HX Effects, I virtually have all the effects I could want at this point. As for amps and cabs, I love my VTBass DI and don't need much for home amplification. Plus, I've never found amps and cabs to be particularly pretty - some of those tiny amps are kinda cute though. Now, I say all of that and tomorrow I'll find out someone like Ibanez are releasing a neck-thru lefty headless fanned fret bass with Fishman Fluence pickups, gothic fret markers, Luminlay side markers, ebony fret board and the most beautiful finish I've ever seen and at a price point that's not beyond my ability to save up for - now that, that would get a lass lusting after something new.

  7. I have just 2, a Schecter Riot4 and a Schecter SLS Evil Twin, the former is in drop D whilst the latter is in D standard. I've told this story before, but I'll go again - I'd bought an Evil Twin online from Anderton's but after about 7 months of waiting for stock to arrive I was getting a little impatient, and I just happened to notice they had a lefty Riot4 (Aurora Burst) in stock so changed my order for that - which had been my second choice when I was considering new basses, anyway. Fast forward about a year and I still had a bit of a thing for the ET design and just so happened to be looking on Anderton's site around Christmas last year and noticed they'd finally gotten some lefty ETs in stock and on sale. When they ended up increasing the discount to (I think) £460) I just had to buy! I mean, £460 off is a huge saving on a £1450ish bass.

In order to make sure I use both, I had to have them tuned differently otherwise I'd just have the Riot sitting in the corner looking pretty but not getting used.

  8. I prefer more modern basses, but if I had to choose something from my mid-70s year of birth, it'd probably have to be a Wal (bit of a Mick Karn thing, I suppose). I'm too old to be able to nab a Steinberger L2 or a Kubicki Factor, sadly. Speaking of Steinberger, I just discovered Ned's half sister, Julia, is a renowned ecological scientist and that's really cool to me.

Just got and gigged my first wonky. I've named her 'Chicken'.

I've had a few Ibanez basses before, but this is the first with Nordstrands, which I consider a definite improvement.

That as a neck-thru lefty could get me looking away from my Schechter basses.

Oh, I love the look of that. Quite unique, a real looker.

Ooh, I do like that. Not typically a fan of traditional looks but it's different enough to look sophisticated and cool in my eyes.

  11. I used to use an EHX Bass Clone (which did produce noise though not a terrible amount) but just recently jumped into Line6 land and got myself an HX Effects and use the Ampeg Liquifier on there and it sounds really nice. So, if you're asking me for a recommendation, then if you like individual pedals and want to stick with that then the Bass Clone, but if you fancy a go at multieffects, then any of of the HX/ Helix family are worth a try.

you'll have fun :)  how complex a pedal board will you be making with it?

Oh, probably nothing particularly complex. I like a simple setup, having been using just a compressor, chorus, flanger and delay along with the preamp with some drive dialed in. I might add a reverse delay and a synth for some extra flavour. I doubt the HXFX is going to even remotely be pushed to it's limits.

  13. I'm selling almost all of my pedalboard and exchanging for an HX Effects tomorrow, but keeping my VTBass DI. I used to hate the idea of multi-effects units but here we are, and I'm really excited. Probably won't be very excited once I start to try and use the thing. I've been advised to get HX Edit, as much as I'd like to just do it all on the unit.

Ah ok. I misunderstood, I thought you were converting all your flats to sharps because you didn't like flats. 😆

You only get bbs and ##s. And it's not jazz, it's just normal theory.

I'm not a fan of high-rises. Yeah, that was bad, I'll grab my clothes and be on my way.

I think that the concept of a double flat comes from the need to use each note name once and once only in a scale in that key. So if you have already used the E (as an Eb), the next note up has to be an F something.

    David

The way I did it also only used each note once and without using double of anything. Never mind, let's have double sharps and triple flats. "This next song is in F###, now that's jaaazz - oww!"
