  1. Hadn’t realised just how wide that neck is.  Now, being a classical guitarist I have always found the 52mm width of most classical necks to be quite a handful, but....65mm?  Wow!

Good luck with it all Tomm, I really wish I was able to try one out, as actually the videos show they sound pretty cool.  I like the woodiness of your larger instruments, though not so keen on the stonefield signature across the body.  I think this is unnecessary.

When playing guitar I play in CGCGCD tuning, so I can only begin to imagine what this beast might sound like in that!  I do an arrangement of “She Moved Through the Fair” where I think this, with a bit of reverb and delay, might sound awesome!!

  2. I tried a secondhand 4 string version of this last year.  I preferred it to my custom Brook bass to be honest- beautiful sound and very easy to play.  I am thoroughly tempted by this, as I have just sold some mandolins.  Do you ship to the UK?

  3. Does anyone here use notation software? I’ve been a long term user of Sibelius, but due to their rediculous subscription model now, I’m looking at other packages, and preferably cheaper as well.  Anyone use “Notion”? Or guitarpro 7? Does the latter allow you to write for choirs as well as fretted instruments?

  4. For sale are my beloved Rode NT 55 matched pair of condenser microphones.  They come with both omni and cardioid interchangeable capsules.  I will include the extra mounting bar as shown.  This will help you get brilliant results for stereo recording, be it xy, spaced omnis, or even ortf arrangements.  All in superb condition.  I have used these for many years now for recording my you tube videos, and they sound amazing.

    Will post of necessary.

  5. I know this is a bass forum, but there may be some multi instrumentalists here.

i have two virtually brand new mandolin instruments for sale from the superb Eastman company.  I have owned them for a month, by trading in a very expensive but esoteric hand made mandolin that I couldn’t sell privately.  I always intended moving these two on ASAP.

So we have first of all a 504 oval hole mandolin, all solid wood, complete with hard case.  This mandolin sounds particularly splendid, and can hold its own against mandolins two or three times its price.  Perfect intonation, very easy to play.  Looking for £650.

Next is a 305 octave mandolin, one of the best value archtop octaves money can buy.  It is awesome.  21” scale, satin finish, gig bag.  Extremely easy to play, lovely tone (far nicer than any flat top octave I have ever tried, and believe me I have tried a few).  I’m looking for £600 for this.

Anyone interested can collect either from Bath or Bournemouth areas, or can meet up within a reasonable train journey from Bath.

  6. As I am selling my acoustic bass, I have no need of this brilliant amp any longer.  Bought from Bass Direct last year, and used for two festival gigs and a smattering of rehearsals, the amp is in superb condition and comes with all the leads, tools, manual and cover.

    Will take £400 for it

Dont forget that this amp has the facility to instal a battery, so excellent for buskers.

I am based in Bath, and the amp itself currently resides in my band’s rehearsal room in Warminster. The amp is far too heavy to post, so collect only please.

Pictures to follow- won’t be able to take photos until my next rehearsal on Sunday.

  7. As promised, here is my brand new tune for Paddy’s day, an Air by O Carolan.  I can promise you I do have other shirts.  It’s pure coincidence that I am wearing the same shirt as my recording of Star of County Down above!!!

I hope that this doesn't leave you bassless..! :shok:

Unfortunately yes!  I have the option of buying it back for the same price when things improve.  Unfortunately I have been doing supply teaching for the last few months, which doesn’t pay well.  However, just got myself a “proper” teaching job for a little while, so who knows.

More Brook brilliance from the House of Jessop. Thanks for sharing; a real nugget of treasure on this forum. :hi:

(I like the X/Y micing, too; class all the way B| ...)

Thank you Dad!  Sad thing is I have had to sell my bass due to financial reasons, but before I hand it over I’ve got one more piece to record, hopefully today, which just so happens to be another Irish tune (by O Carolan).  Stay tuned (hopefully)!

@Brook_fan if it’s in relation to Europe stuff, it was only mentioned once or twice, andnthats my fault, but actually it’s sort of relevant and comparative.

According to the figures it’s a 50-50 split, each camp will believe they are right and will trot out reasons for it, and the debate will roll on........going no further as I certainly don’t want to politicise it!

Well there was the hint to the US election as well, but no matter.

The way I think of compression is this: imagine you are playing a repeating 4 crotchet per bar pedal bass line (typical rock bassline).  You are heavily accenting the first beat of the bar.  Now, with your compressor you could, if you set it up right, completely get rid of those accents so that each note has equal weight.  It would also make the bassline appear louder because the three other notes in the bar that were quiet are now the same level as the accented note.

Or you can reduce the accented notes a little bit still have them accented.  This is probably what most bass players should and do do with a compressor.  Preserving the natural dynamics to some extent, but making sure those quieter notes don’t get lost amongst the rest of the band.

I don’t subscribe to the view that compressors make up for poor technique.  It’s all about what you want to achieve. And no, I don’t use one.

Great thanks, I'm definitely going to buy some. Probably a box of 12 as the nice guy on ebay said they're cheaper in bulk.

That picture tells us nothing.  No indication of threshold, ratio, attack release etc.  All of which which produce different looking pictures according to their settings.

And the whole idea of compression is that, unless you want it to, it does t have to be noticeable to be really effective .

And why has this thread got quite political? 🤔
