MY question wasn't really about the mixed views of whether CS Basses are worth the money (for what it's worth I have two.  I am left handed and started playing bass in the CBS years.  There was very limited choice of any L/H Fender Bass.  L/H Jazzes were as rare as pixie dust.  Hence today, I have two CS Jazzes.  The (relatively) cheaper one is by far the better.  The expensive one looks nice and plays well, but doesn't knock me out.  I agree wholeheartedly with a lot of comments posted in this thread, on both sides of the argument.

What I was really on about was distribution and selling practices (in this case of Fenders), particularly with top end priced products.  Left handed instruments are esoteric for a retailer at the best of times, but their relative rarity highlights how they can get 'sold on' in the secondary market without really being sold to an honest end punter.  I just wondered how common this was with high end instruments?

Clearly they are nose-bleed expensive new and depreciate pretty quickly.  I was interested to see a couple of 'sold', apparently second-hand basses recently turn up on an internet dealer and on Reverb.  The prices approximated to a slight discount on their 'new' price.   Meanwhile the large retailer where these basses had originally been for sale had jacked up their prices for the new ones remaining.  It looked suspiciously like the retailer was 'churning' their stock in order to obtain fresh stock from Fender.  Any thoughts out there?

And while we are at it, I think Imagination's bass player used to appear with a different bass every time, so this might be the only Wal appearance? (and I presume the bass line was actually a synth?)

I think she met one or two men in her time...... I was lucky enough to see her play with Larry Klein at Wembley.  Dare I say I think Jaco (or even Pino) were probably a bit more interesting (as bass players)

The first time I ever heard of (or played through) a Glockenklang was in Pete the Fish's old workshop at Wal.  It was what he used to test all Wals with.  I would say that's a recommendation. 

One of my favourite albums of all time is Shadows and Light.  It also made me a life long fan of Pat Methingy and Lyle Mays (the latter now sadly RIP)

What should have been a fantastic Fender Precision Lefty, except it wasn't.  I think it was probably that I didn't know how to play it!  I ended up hot rodding it with a di Mazio pickup, putting a Badass on it and stripping the sunburst ala John Deacon.  All to no avail.  40 years on, I acquired a 77 Precision which must be pretty close to my original (bar a maple v rosewood neck), and it is the business. In the intervening 40 years I've learned to play a little bit better too.
