  1. I have a massive pile of bass magazines which I’m not taking with me when I move next month. They stretch back many years and are too numerous to list. If anyone wants to come to Brentwood, Essex and collect them they are yours! Otherwise they will end up dumped which would be a shame 😞

theres a few guitar mags amongst them too but please don’t hold that against me...

  2. Thanks all... just to clarify why I’m planning on using one to improve intonation. I play unlined fretless and whilst I can rely on intoning by ear for most intervals I find it really difficult to hear if major 7ths and b9s are in tune. Due to the natural dissonance of these intervals the ‘beating’ between a drone and my note makes me automatically start trying to adjust the pitch. I’m hoping using a tuner to check these intervals will give me confidence in exactly what they should sound like so I can be more secure and confident in what I’m aiming for! Maybe it’s a waste of time but I guess it’s gotta be worth a shot.

    thanks for the suggestions all...

  3. i recently saw an amazing eye opener on getting your head around odd time on Scott’s bass lessons. Scott did a course recently with a drummer (Gavin Harrison?) and he had a brilliant way of looking at this, particularly useful for higher beat groupings such as 11,  13, 17 etc. I’m not going to butcher his method by explaining it poorly here but get yourself over to SBL for a free trial and take a look at the course. Suffice to say in about 30 mins I was pretty comfortable grooving in 19/8 and playing fills across the bar line etc.

Note: in no way am I affiliated with SBL... other music educators are available etc etc etc 😉

  4. Today I picked up my new custom zoot bass from Mike Walsh and... oh my!

firstly, the workmanship is stunning. Every aspect is top drawer. It was great to be able to specify the exact neck profile and radius of the ebony board and mike absolutely nailed it. Although I decided to do unlined on the board facia I’m pleased I got lines added to the top of the fretboard to give me a helping hand. The ebony board is so thick too! Really makes it sing.

its fitted with a Noll 3 band active preamp and amazing pups from Harry Haussell. The neck is a 70s jazz and the bridge is a music man with a jazz coil sitting between the two mm coils. The amount of switching options is ridiculous... it’ll probably take as long to get to grips with the electronics as it will to learn to play it in tune! 😂

if you’re thinking of getting a custom build do yourself a favour and have a chat to mike!

  5. Hey Edd, I’m in Brentwood. A few mins from the M25 / A12 junction. There are no dots on the fingerboard itself only lines which are perfectly flush. There are dots on the top edge of the neck but no issues with these either.

You know you want to come and give her a go 😉
