Maybe that's the real reason he said he didn't want to do it!
Let's just say that our singer is the best singer in the band

I don't see anything wrong with the song. It's about a guy who is trying to stop a young girl "coming on" to him. Some people think it's about an older guy having lustful thoughts about an underage girl but the guy in question is trying to reject her because he knows it's wrong. Your singer would need to have a great voice to carry that song off!
I certainly get where you're coming from, but it does rely on the audience to give it some thought. We have a former drummer who is now on the sex offenders' register, and the singer is a teacher, so he's very conscious of these things.
Even then, the protagonist does seem to be tempted:
Get out of here Before I have the time To change my mind 'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far
He's not ruling it out 100% perhaps

Have never managed to persuade our singer to do Gary Puckett & the Union Gap's "Young Girl". There are a couple of dozen reasons in the lyrics I suspect...

I know of some guys who have played as Geoff Leppard (rather than Jeff) in "tribute" to the patron saint of Lotus owners, Geoff Capes.
I've toyed with forming a fake boy band called Westlike

Shocked to discover that Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle would have been known as Neil Megson by his mum.

Captain Beefheart's Magic Band had some superb nom de plumes.
John French - Drumbo
Jeff Cotton - Antennae Jimmy Semens
Bill Harkleroad - Zoot Horn Rollo
Mark Boston - Rockette Morton
Victor Hayden - The Mascara Snake
Art Tripp - Ed Marimba
Elliot Ingber - Winged Eel Fingerling
And the good Captain started life as Don Van Vliet.
*** Pedantic bustard alert ***
The Capt started life as Don Vliet and added the Van later

Thanks both

Thanks for all the suggestions folks 👍

At the moment we record rehearsals using just a tablet with its in-built mic and the results aren't great, you'll be surprised to hear.
What would you recommend to improve this? A usb mic looks the cheapest option, or go for a dedicated recorder?
Thanks, Andy

The Smiths at Dergate Northampton, arrived late, missed James as the support band doh! stayed for about 5 songs whilst everyone around me stood on one leg whirling Gladioli about, I though they are never going to take off doing that, left and went down the pub instead!
Sisters of Mercy Rock City early 2000's ish, having seen them there on their first tour they were brilliant, this time they were dull and boring so we left!
James at Nottingham Theatre Royal is the only gig I've ever left early. The realisation that I could just leave if I was bored was a eureka moment. It may have had something to do with it being the first gig for which I'd had to (irony alert) sit down rather than standing, which probably spoiled the atmosphere for me.
Up until then I'd been a big fan.

I tore the tendon of the ring finger of my fretting hand playing rugby many years ago, and have a cracking scar for my troubles.
The finger in question got back about 80% of its movement and works well enough.
My one piece of advice would be to work through all the physio you're prescribed and don't shirk it. It'll be worth it in the long run

Another vote for Beefheart: people seem to struggle with Trout Mask Replica in particular.
On the jazz front: Ornette Coleman

Would love to do this but our singer is not convinced that his wife would appreciate it
