  1. There just aren't that many "standard" sized pedals with a DI - pretty much every pre-amp+DI on the market is a big box. The best M81 alternative I can think of is a Broughton Audio Messenger Jr, but good luck finding one

A couple of things to consider:
    - Have you got room for a micro DI box tucked under the board? Or could you sit the pre-amp pedal on top of a fairly flat DI box? The extra height might not be an issue if you're not switching it on and off all the time
    - Do you definitely need a pre-amp, i.e. something that boosts your signal from instrument level to line level so that it can drive a power amp? If you're just after clean EQ and you can squeeze in a separate DI box, there are all kinds of great options available to you.

I can’t say too much about unannounced products, but one of the things you’ll notice about the original Beta Lead is it’s a fairly big box. With modern technology and manufacturing techniques, and certainly with the market in the way that it is right now with fly-rigs and those kinds of things, I think there’s a good chance that smaller versions of the Beta Lead might be on the horizon

  3. Still enjoying this pedal a lot! I've got it dialled in nicely now, and I'm using it weekly with IEMs for ampless rehearsals.
Here's me attempting to remember a bassline that I learned about 25 years ago:

PJ bass - P pickup only - tone rolled off a bit - plectrum
Little bit of 4:1 compression in front from a Keeley Bassist
    DB-PRE settings: bass 7 - lo-mid 2 (switch down, so ~700Hz) - hi-mid 7 - tube channel - drive 6

And the bypassed signal, for comparison:

  4. I see these are the stock strings for Solar guitars & basses, so it's safe to assume they're good for metal 🤘
I'm curious about the Blacksmith stainless steel strings, as the listed tension for the E and B is unusually high for roundwounds at 55lbs - could be good for drop tuning. Not willing to risk the money on what's probably a misprint though!

  5. I think this is what they're getting at with the name:

    Standard guitar E A D G B E
    7-string guitar B E A D G B E
    Baritone guitar B E A D G B

    Standard bass E A D G
    5-string bass B E A D G
    "Baritone" bass B E A D

i.e. it comes with 65-130 strings, it's designed to be played a 5th lower than your usual 4-string. In the absence of a standard term for this, they've come up with something that sort-of makes sense... if you try not to think about the normal meaning of "baritone" 😆

  6. Resistors can go either way round. Only eletrolytic capacitors have a direction, but at 0.02uF you won't be using one of those.
One end of the 4.7k resistor is connected to ground, so it's no big deal if that end touches the shielding (since that should also be grounded). Heatshrink or insulating tape should do the trick if you're worried about bare wires elsewhere.

  7. It says in the FAQs:

There are two product lines, Sunn Historic and Sunn Modern. Historic products closely follow original designs.

Sunn Modern products respect the history and aesthetic but use current technology that was not available to previous generations. Advances in digital audio such as amp modeling, cabinet simulation and software plugins will feature in the Sunn Modern line.

So far it's all just reissues of the heritage stuff, but I'm guessing they'll be releasing a pedal-format amp sim at some point - along the lines of the Ampeg SGT-DI. They'd be daft not to!
