  1. I’ve recently started using the steel roundwounds on my 4 string basses (Jazz & Stingray).

Can’t quite understand the pricing difference between 40-100’s & 45-105’s with Strings direct but I’ve found them a good string, not too rough on the fingers/frets & very reasonably priced compared to the D’addario & Dunlop strings I’ve used up to this point?

They’ve lasted quite well in brightness, definitely better than Roto’s or Elites in my experience..

  2. My first bass was a Stagg Jazz bass, bought secondhand in 81.

It was a nice natural finish with a bound maple neck/fingerboard with black block inlays. It had chrome pick-up covers & even had a strip of foam under the bridge ‘ashtray’?
I very much doubt whether it was from the Stagg brand that we know today but it was made in Japan, as stated on the headstock.

It also come with flatwound strings (which I knew nothing about at the time?) It was only when I tried a friends bass, sometime later, that I realised the difference in tension compared to his roundwounds...Learning to play slap with flatwounds proved disappointing & I couldn’t believe the difference when I finally broke a string & replaced them with a set of Rotosounds.

Looking back, it was probably a decent, almost ‘Lawsuit’ copy, which I p/xed for a Squier SQ Precision, a couple of years later, going on image more than versatility? I wish I’d thought a bit more as the P-bass choice won over an Aria SB600 & a Westone Thunder 1a..

Ah ok, thanks. Just a question. When looping can you switch between patches on the fly.? So layer a clean sound then switch to maybe a synth sound while looping.?

You can do this with the B3n if you build a patch with the looper near the end of the chain but you can only fit limited fx in before as the looper & drums take up nearly half of the signal chain?

  4. Can’t vouch for the Boss unit but the Zoom B3n has a looper & drum rhythm section that can be used together.

I have a couple of patches set up for practice purposes, work a treat 👍

  5. I do love a Vigier, a friend of mine plays an 80’s passion in a Rock/metal covers band & it sounds glorious?

I think it all depends on what sort of tone you are looking for, The graphite necked Vigier is very full sounding, with a clear top-end but IMO more traditional sounding than say, a Spector or a Dingwall, even a Warwick, which can all provide a real ‘growly mid’ more modern metal sound, especially if you like that overdriven sound?

  6. I thought first of all that it was just a GP11 preamp but looking at the rear, it looks like an entire AH250 has been reassembled into a flight case?

In fact looking at the model number on the back, it may have once been a 8x10 combo?

  7. Just wanted a ‘Shout out’ to Bass direct.

I ordered a Hipshot GB7 for one of my Warwicks Tuesday morning, and it arrived lunchtime Wednesday.

I wasn’t expecting such a speedy service, especially not in the current climate & it’s just nice to be surprised 👍

  8. I tend not to get involved with multiple band pub gigs that much over the last few years, I don’t have a problem with sharing though as over the years, I’ve met mostly amiable fellow bass players who tend not to be the ‘band divas’ anyway?

The multiple band gigs that I get to play these days (Pre Covid) have been festivals with my  80’s synth band, where decent foldback & monitoring have been provided.
The amount of sequencer, arpeggiator & drum loops we use, everything is sent back through the foldback & I’m more than happy to D.I out of my pedal board to hear it back through the monitors.

There is sometimes backline provided but the engineers tend to keep things pretty quiet on stage & unless I walk over to the amp, I don’t hear much bass at the back anyway?

  9. Greetings one & all, I’m looking for recommendations

The preamp on my 25yr old Warwick Thumb 5NT is starting to hum & buzz.

As the woods have settled over the years, I’m getting less impressed by the 3 band MEC preamp.

The bass is rather woolly & I find the treble frequency too high & unworkable.

Has anyone replaced their preamp & what with?
I quite like the aguilar 3 band with the switchable mids but a luthier friend of mine has also mentioned a Noll preamp.

    Your views please are appreciated..
