  1. Just bought an EBS Unichorus from Lee & what a pleasure it was to do business with him.

Kept me informed all the way through the transaction & despite delays with postal strikes & deliveries it turned up well packaged & true to description..

    Many thanks again 👍

  2. Depends on the genre of music surely?
A lot of the guitar bands of the time i.e Stereophonics, Manics, Oasis, were playing Fenders & Rickys..As said, there were plenty of Stingrays being wielded by the more ‘Britpop’ bands that were still hanging around?

Rock & metal bands seemed to be extending their range, so a lot of five& six strings were being played….So there are your Warwicks & Spectors, quite a few Ibanez & Stingray 5’s

Your pop & R’n’B bassist seemed to be toting six’ers if I recall..A lot of Warwick Streamers & Ken Smiths as well as the more boutique brands..

I spent the majority of the decade doing function & Holiday camp work with my Alembic Rogue 5, if not, I was playing a Stingray or Warwick Thumb 5 in various pub rock bands..

  3. Nine times out of ten, I have two tablets mounted on my mic stand (I also have a drink holder & plectrum holder too!)

The tablets are for set list & IEM monitor mix.

The monitor mix, I usually tilt flat, once set, as it’s far less visible from the audience.

When not singing bv’s, I’m often away from my mic stand anyway, so not really too bothered that my stand looks like a work station?
All the band have tablets, We just regard them as another piece of equipment.

  4. Hi folks

Just curious what’s everyone’s favourite compact stand for offset bodied basses (i.e Jazz bass)

When I’m forced to pack light, I have a couple of ‘A’ stands & they have the swing-up neck supports, I’ve never really trusted the standard ‘A’ frame stands, but the two I have fold down & fit in a 15” x 15” Gator mixer bag.

I’ve been trying to track down a spare but they’re proving to be quite rare these days.

They’re not perfect with J-bass bodies but do give the extra security with the neck support?

  5. First thing I’d check would be the power supply itself, mine overheated during a gig back in the summer & would cut out, with a flashing display..

I had to change power supply to get through the second half of the set.

    Haven’t had a problem since I bought a ‘Onespot’ 9v supply..

I`m not keen on bass (or drums as it happens) in the monitors anyway, I like to keep them for vocals & guitars. I don`t my amp majorly loud on stage, just same volume as unamplified drums, as such for a venue such as O2 Academy I`d want something big enough to not struggle/be pushed.

Most of us have watched some of Glastonbury over the weekend, I wonder why all those pro bassists seemed to be happy with big rigs on those big stages, they could learn a lot from logging on here.

Probably because FOH & stage sound guys haven’t got the time to sort out individual mixes for IEM’s on the band turn-arounds?
I imagine soundcheck times are very limited?

Wow you get chips with skins on without putting it in the rider?

A good cabinet should have the dispersion that allows you to hear on or off axis although I agree that the benefit of a cabinet onstage, at the any O2 venue is as least debatable.

    Just going on experience…

  8. Pedal board & IEM’s for me…

Backline gets lost on large stages, unless you’re just going to stand in front of your speaker cab & who wants to do that on a big stage? The minute you step ‘off axis’ the sound will change or worse, maybe get quieter?
If you’re doing moderate/big stages, you’ll get wedges provided anyway..

So that leaves room in the van then?……

  9. I can’t stand still when I play, I ‘Dad dance’ on the spot in front of my mic & if I’m not required to sing, I prowl around often interacting with our string section of Violin & Cello…Who are often doing the same!
It’s quite distracting when our Cellist strides over, she’s nearly 6’ in her heel’s 😃
You have to be careful of our violinist otherwise you could be poked with a bow!

I can’t stand watching bands who ‘Shoe-gaze’ their way through a performance? Give the audience something to watch..

  10. I played a venue over the weekend where the FOH speakers had everything under 400hz rolled off, due to complaints from punters who are sat at dinner tables nearest the stage, saying the bands are too loud!

Even the speakers suspended from the ceiling, halfway down the dance floor have this HPF?
To combat the lack of bottom end, there were subs set under the stage to provide some ‘oomph’ without projecting out to the crowd…

I have no idea what it sounded like at the back of the venue, overall, but as we run a silent stage with no backline, Through my IEM’s my bass felt pretty good (similar I imagine to the effect of using a backbeat?) during soundcheck.

Our sound engineer demonstrated the subs on their own & it was a pretty woolly sound, from out front…disappearing completely the further back, down the venue as you moved.

    We just endured the night…

The punters seemed to enjoy themselves…

There were no complaints about the sound…
