I’m pretty sure that the Affinity series come with Ceramic pick-ups, my white PJ certainly does…
They’re a bit of an acquired taste, being quite bright, but get the height right & they can sing.
I found the maple neck quite bulky but I swapped the neck out for a 70’sCV which is somewhere between a Jazz & a P-bass width, but lovely & slim in depth.
As others have suggested, get a good set-up done & see how you get on before shelling out on too many upgrades? Otherwise you might be better off saving for a better quality instrument in the long run…

I’ve been on a search myself over the last year for a compact, sturdy stand for when I fly with my bass.
The best I have found, that doesn’t wobble is the Hercules Travelite.
It folds flat & I can fit it in the front pocket of my Gator Pro gig bag, I’ve used it at a couple of festivals & it impressed me that much that it now lives in the bottom of my Pelicase as a spare emergency stand on most of my regular gigs or if I’m travelling light..
It even supports Jazz bass bodies as there is enough back/body support, if you move the bass ‘off centre’?

The Bass Centre Wapping, coz that was just haloed ground in the 80/90’s
but also my two favourite local music stores that actually catered for bass players .. Monkey Business in both Southend & Romford,
also honourable mention to Honkytonk music Southend, where I bought my first two basses..

I went through a stage of ‘always on’ but so subtle a setting, you’d only really notice on bass only moments.
It’s more to give the bass tone a 3D effect, I’ve done it in the past with subtle flanging effects, only really noticing the effect when chugging 8’s or 16’s?
I only stopped using the effect due to limited space on my pedal board but that will be resolved very soon…-

I always thought they were made for status by Picato.
Might well have been,
I tried Status’ own brand a couple of year’s ago (The later branded ones)
couldn’t get over the discrepancies of string length in various sets, so went back to using Elites DB strings..At least they fit & tune -up?

Some very variable reviews on Amazon ... are these strings actually suitable for 34" scale basses?
It does state long scale on the Amazon site?

Did my first gig with backline for over 18 months, Saturday night…..
Didn’t like it!
My usual gigging set up is IEM’s on theatre stages, this was a small pub gig.I couldn’t get used to the dynamics of a cab behind me, it all sounded unbalanced?
I’ve sold up most of what backline I possessed admittedly, so only had a MB head & 15” cab & the stage was quite small, so most of the sound was going past my knees.I was sending a feed to FOH as well, so my amp was only for monitoring purposes, but with trying to listen out for click, vocals & electronic drums, it all sounded too live to me! 😄
The answer should’ve been to go IEM but the last time the band played at the venue, we ran everything IEM but suffered with wi-fi issues ..

Ordered, will do for my P-basses..

When Status first started marketing strings back around 1990 (Their Hyper-active range) they used GHS…Boomers if I recall?
I don’t know if they changed supplier but might be worth a shot? -
Maybe it’s just folklore but I’m sure I read it somewhere that the original Thumb bass was meant to be headless?

I’ve always fancied a Shawaddywaddy covers band…

that's a good point ref the velcro actually
I wonder if racking it would be better. (this is so I don't have to mess about plugging it in and setting it up, everytime I do a gig)
anyone racked the RM500 I wonder
As it’s designed as a floor unit to mount on a pedalboard etc, I see little point in trying to rackmount it?
Would it not be better going for one of the rack-unit versions of the receiver?
The pedal function tuner alone is worthy of ‘Kill switch’ status if you need to quickly mute the bass?
Better to just leave on top of your Ashdown, or if you can rack the amp…Velcro the receiver on top of the flightcase to access the button?
To answer a previous question, one of the Cellists in my band uses the non +, non pedal version of this system and we’ve never clashed…
Possibly because she’s stayed on the 2.4g network or more likely because I tend to do a frequency sweep during soundcheck to make sure I’m not going to clash with anyone, this is with two other members of the band being wireless & we have 7 IEM systems in operation at any one time..
I love my GLXD16+ system, it’s never let me down & I tend to use it for all my gigs, switching between multiple basses (active & passive, depending on the night..
The battery life is most impressive, having enough juice for 2x1hr sets, 3 nights a week sometimes…
If not, I take it back to my hotel room & recharge it for the next few shows.

Done
But what are you trying to achieve?
There seem to be female Bassists all over the socials…Kinga Glyk, Mohini Dey, Cici von Strangelove, Rhonda Smith, Esperanza Spalding, Daisy Pepper, Ida Nielson….Just off the top of my head, all seem to be doing very well for themselves?
I don’t think male dominance has held them back in the industry?
Talent is talent as far as I can see?-

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned a Stingray 5 yet?
I have owned various 5 string basses, Status,Warwick,Alembicbut I consider my ‘go-to’ 5 string my Stingray….It’s just so versatile
It just sits in any mix, I have travelled, toured, played function work, pubs & it’s always worked for me..
It’s not that “boutique” that I have to worry about where I take it or put it down…Half the time it doesn’t even get a second glance?
It can hide in a mix or stand out, depending on eq & also sounds great with versatile eq without backline if on an IEM gig.All things I consider in a ‘Work horse’ if I get a call & have to grab a gigbag…

Still trying to come to terms with this..
I’ve been out for the last 4 days gigging so had limited time/ internet to follow the story, I was aware that Nick had gone missing but the following news come as a shock…
RIP Nick
It was a pleasure knowing you, & you’ll be deeply missed..

My trio of Squier P basses
The sunburst PJ is a VM
The white PJ started life as a Affinity but I acquired a CV 70’s neck from Spacecowboy from this very parish, Hi-mass bridge, custom loom & a set of Toneriders.
The orange is a real bitsa, with the original affinity neck from the white one, a ratty body from Orangepeelneil & the rest mostly raided from my spares bin..The Neo Entwistle pickup gives it a great punky JJ rasp

Fender Jazz 5 string - floppy B?
in Bass Guitars
Posted
Had a Mexican Fender Jazz (The one with 5 in a line headstock) for a couple of years around 2000.
The neck felt ok(ish) but the B string wasn’t the best? It lacked a lot of definition, only really working with a tapered B string but could never get a low enough action, even when I got a Badass bridge.
I was using it for mostly Pub-work to give my Warwick Thumb 5 a rest…Was night/day comparing the two..
Ended up trading it in for a Stingray 5, which is now my ‘workhorse’ 5 string.
