I wouldn't stress about a combo, there are so many great little amps around now. My vote would be a Euphonic Audio head, (used 500?) and a wizzy 1x12 or Barefaced Midget. My GK MB150 still surprises me...but every now and then it sounds crap! All depends on the room.
My other suggestion is the old SWR 220 head - its a puny 160w into 8 ohms, but a small modern 4ohm cab could sound very good and plenty loud?
I use the SWR ST-220 head, Very light and crystal clear. Its very loud too with a 4ohm cab where it gives out the full 220w...
Recomended! There is one on ebay now... These were discontinued in 1998 and the Bass Galery has one for £400???
BC'er "cetera" has a "Behringer EP2500 - great power amp! £150" for sale
(sorry dont know how to post links)
so you'll find it in the "for sale"/amps&cabs bit of the forum.
but it will probably be a good one Id guess
The old HH power amps tend to regularly sell for very reasonable prices on ebay. A few people on the forum have quite cheap Class-D amps they picked up somewhere, but I can't remember where.
Keep in mind that going from 220 watts to 480 watts will only be around a 3dB increase in volume -- but of course, sometimes that's all you need.
Many Thanks for your advise, Been a great help and will keep an eye out for an old H&H..

Not done this before so take it easy on me..Lol
I have an SWR ST-220 head / Pre - Amp which runs =
140w @ 8ohms
220w @ 4ohms
I would like to use this unit with a power amp for larger gigs via its PRE-AMP OUT, so looking for a cheap option? I already have an old Marshall 9000 series power amp but its 2 channel 200w & 200w @ 4ohms each.
I am using the SWR Henry 8x8 cab rated at 480w @ 4ohms so don't need a mega amp..
Any ideas would be great?
Cheers

Well, Being a lover of the Fender Jazz & Precision i was advised to stop waisting my money on $hite and buy a G&L, One came up on Gumtree a while back and i was advised to buy it. I Jumped straight in the car with my Peavey T40 and i did a deal with a cracking bloke and walked away with the 1991 G&L L2000.
I must admit the colour is still growing on me but the feel and sounds are just spot on. I have sold all my other 20+ Yr old Jap Basses including a cracking Squire as i just dont need them anymore.
This is a pic of the exact same model + year etc.
Spec =
1991 G & L L2000 in excellent condition. Last year of the Made in USA models i think?
Colour: Premium Blueburst
Body: Louisiana Swamp Ash
Neck: Maple w/Rosewood Fingerboard
Pickups: 2 x G&L Soapbar
Neck Radius: 12" (22 Fret)
All in all it's just Quality...
