  1. Just to clear up to grammeFriday, As he seems to not really understand.

"Life skills" when mentioned with my 11 year old sons education: is the application of the skills & knowladge, that he is being taught in school to normal life and practical situations. IE mathamatics for budgeting your financial incomings & outgoings, or even things like estimating a journey time. Basically showing children that their knowladge works together and overlaps into combined knowladge.

Because my son is a very hands on kid, once "Life skills" were applied to his education he actually flourished. It's a very effective teaching tool that is refered to as "Life skills" by his school.
In my day we were mainly shown everything in theory but never had it applied to useful situations, so we were left thinking......what the hell do we use this for?
THe same as long drawn out boring music lessons where we were made to learn to play keyboard by a teacher who hated our guts & was well aware none of us wanted to be there, we always came out thinking that it was a massive waste of time for all involved.

I dont think I've ever heard of any child learning how to tie shoelaces in classes.....Parents usually teach their kids that.

Aruments and name calling seemed to be happening because people have given their opinion & others are getting up-tight.

  2. Nah I dont agree either. I dont think it should be made manditory.

It is a great skill to have, but I think kids should be concentrating on life skills & standard education. An extra curricular subject is fine but having to learn an instrument would be in my mind a bad idea.
For instance I showed no interest at all at school about learning an instrument (I couldnt even play a triangle....no joke I failed at the triangle) but after I left school I started considering my love for music & the possibility of creating it for myself.

If I'd been made to learn an instrument at school, I doubt I'd have enjoyed it very much.

  3. Bass chose me.

I'd been learning guitar for about a year & although I could play pretty well. I didnt get a buzz from it at all & was wondering weather to just give up. I went round to a mates house who had a varied collection of bits & bobs laying around his flat. He'd just come back from his mums house because she had found a stash of more instruments in his loft that she wanted him to take away.

In the corner there was this battered old 3/4 length ric copy.....it was covered in grime & looked horrendus but I picked it up & just started noodling about on it. next thing I know I had been playing it for half an hour & my mate simply smiled at me & said "looks like you have found your instrument"

A week later I sold off all my guitar stuff & bought a bass. It's been in my veins ever sinse.

Saw them way back in 1988, with their original frontman Chuck Mosely. Never gelled with Mike Patton as a frontman after Chuck left.

Yeh I know a few people like that who prefered Chuck !
I got into them as Mike was just finding his feet as a frontman.....I still think he's one of the best I've ever seen live

  5. Its funny that FNM has been mentioned.
I was in talks with a group of guys about joining them, They said they were a rock band and when they asked me to put some songs forward i told them I'd love to have a go at either "A small victory" or "Ashes to ashes" just to sound them out.....they sounded gob smacked and none of them had heard of FNM. they asked me to put forward "Something they all know" <_<

    I didnt join lol

I really hope they obtain their snearing comedy that I loved so much

  6. I'm now looking at doing something like Royal blood.
Me & my best mate from school, who is the best drummer I've ever played in a band with, are finally getting together to make some noise. The main idea is to have some fun.
So with this in mind I'm looking to fill out & make as much noise with the bass as possible.

I'm looking at maybe a micro pog, chorus & distorsion to really fill out the empty bits & let my drumist do his thing.

Any ideas & pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately I'm not a wealthy person so budget is not massive

  7. Eeeeeek !!!!

    classic though

I once got it in my yunky patch .....ya know the bit between berty bum hole & Ya nut sack .....looks a bit like a Klingons forehead. That hurt like nothing i've felt before.

  8. The issue i keep seeing in the above post's is the classic big tunes were written by the big bands of the day, unfortunately there ARE no big bands today because of the MP3 dominated world we live in.

Scenes are now diversifying into smaller sub groups & no rock gods exist's anymore hence the lack of anthems that exist's today. Before there was a small amount of record labels that in a way gave you limited choice in what was available to buy there was large fan bases that grew from that limited choice.

Nowadays bands can release music themselves so smaller crowds follow them and if you are not internet savvy in the way the youth of today is people like us do not hear about them.
For instance I heard a great band on 6 Music that blew me away, so I went looking for more of their music & found not only had they released 3 albums idependantly their last tour is happening now, luckily I got tickets but I've missed a band that I would have been really into during their career is i'd known about them.

Music has diversified to a point where you have to go looking for it, rather than it comes to you, I often find it funny that kids today are considered idle becuase they have everything at their finger tips but to follow a scene now you have to be actively a part of it to keep up. I love the way music has gone, there is all sorts of great new music out there, it's just something you have to actively participate in to get something out of.

  9. I know what Blue is saying.
Although i'm 38 the last time I was on stage in front of a crowd I felt a bit uncomfortable.

I used to play in alternative rap metal/thrash bands & back then I had a very low stooped stance with my hair draped forward, i also moved around lots making eye contact with the crowd and used to gee them up by bouncing around and had lots of energy, some people said it was my thing & people always knew it was me by the way I stood and moved on stage.

I did a small gig last year with a new band who needed a stand in. I am now balding & felt very old. I felt strange because I lacked the confidence to stand like i did back then & was aware of that feeling that "Your too old & uncool" .

It knocked my confidence badly & when I got offered the role of being their full time bass player, I turned it down because I felt too uncomfortable to get back up on stage. My mates who saw me play that night knew something wasn't right but didn't comment.

I keep thinking about that gig & all I remember is feeling very self aware, bald & old. I didnt really enjoy playing and was very seriously about to hang up the bass & walk away. I've since then thought about how stupid I was being but I do understand the mindset of the OP.

    Phew!

They may be a really good band, but I just cant take her seriously as I'm usually choking on my beer when watching her, which is a shame really.

I just keep chuckling now with the gifs above
