I'd like to have a Rick-alike bass that had all the looks of the original, but with the fake bridge pickup surround that looked like the real thing from a distance, but was actually flat, like a chrome scratchplate, so you could rest your thumb on the pickup unhindered.
maybe a photo of the real thing under a piece of perspex to go round the pickup, and a similar thing to go round a conventional bridge too...
Hi,
Do you mean something like this?

Cheaper alternative is what I did here:

Hello all,
Just bought a FAL Super 100 PA amp off Ebay - £7!
Couldn't resist bargain, especially as it's a valve amp.
Though, I'm not sure if it will sound any good - guess I'll find out...
Has anybody ever tried using a PA for bass with any success, & does anybody know anything about FAL?
Cheers -
To play that, you need to be either as camp as a row of tents or so macho that no one dares comment.
I wouldn't recommend trying both at the same time ...
Butch & Camp?
A nasty Kay - sorry got to keep this thread alive!
Didn't New Order play with two bassists at times? Hooky... and someone to hold down the low end?
Hooky is also a member of the Freebass project: himself, Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and Mani (Stone Roses & Primal Scream). According to this interview, they're looking for a vocalist - someone who can sing over three bassists.
Both his other solo efforts; Revenge & Monaco also featured two bassists. Second bass player handling all low end (which is sequenced in New Order stuff) while he does the high/melodic bits over the top. I also think he has problems, singing & playing at the same time -
I think we should all bid on it and get it upto about £10,000 he will think christmas has come early......
I agree. Was considering (still am) whacking an unfeasible amount on this. Then requesting local collection/payment....tw*t!
What are Ebay going to do? -
£50 for a hutch?!!

I can build it a nice new hutch made from pastry! -
Tidy looking Franconia Jazz copy
And they seriously don't come weirder than this - an Electra X-610 Outlaw, with MPC modular circuitry. I have never, ever seen one of these on Ebay before, it's likely a personal import, since Electra wasn't sold in the UK. Current high bidder is a poster on here - no, it's not me!

That Elektra is possibly the coolest looking bass I've seen in a while! -

It was being discussed on the RickResource board last night -

They're bonkers that lot, aren't they?! -
And a Yamaki P-alike:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=150186275536
Terrible pics & description, but it's not a brand you see too often, so wotever.
J.
I'm quite interested in the Yamaki - was wondering; is anybody else on here going to go for it? -
And the T-bird copy Nick posted presumably got pulled for having an unambiguous listing - so now it's relisted so nobody has a fecking clue what it is. Except us lot, of course:
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270188516192" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270188516192</a>
That's actually quite interesting. The serial number's consistent with Fujigen Gakki's numbering - which would make it a '77. However, I've no idea what it might be - never seen a factory fretless before, and the bridge & pickups - plus the pickup positioning - are quite different to the Fujigen T-Birds I've seen.
Prog behemoth or what?
Jon.
The T-Bird has been knocking around for quite a while in my local free ads paper. Seller's been after £300. Would be interested myself if it was cheaper & fretted - unfortunately have no need for a fretless.
Nice looking bass though, & as you say 'interesting' -
Nice looking unidentified T-Bird

And a couple of Columbus'

Another interesting one here:

Good call - now there's a band!
I remember seeing these a few times, quite ahead of their time, & they really knew how bang out a groove. Can hear their influence in a lot of punk-funk stuff going round now.
Apparently, back together. -
found that pic of the doubleneck-

Never mind the doubleneck, check out that mullet!
I'm going to get the album 'A Song for All Seasons'. Not usually a fan of Prog, but I like this guy's style! -
Heard a track in the car on the way home yesterday on Radio 2 called 'Northern Lights' by a band called Renaissance.
Blew me away, (to my ears) sounds something like Hooky (on a good day) playing with Peter, Paul & Mary(?!)
Not found much on the net ,other than bassplayer was Jon Camp & this nice (unrelated) montage of the song on You Tube
Hello Nick,
Thanks for the interesting links.
Good news: the 4 matched 2N5952 JFET are not a problem!
I also managed to find very clear instructions about how to paint the box.
Silent Fly
Hi,
Last link was basically stating that unmatched JFETs was not a problem for this project(?)
Good to see you've managed to source 4 matched ones anyway, & a good price. Lot less hassle than buying 50 & sorting through them!
Thanks as well for link to painting a box...some other interesting stuff on that website too.
Good luck with the build. -
I may end up buying only the PCB. For £6.50 it is more than reasonable. I am not sure where I am going to get 4 matched 2N5952 JFET though
I can only suggest buying a batch of them (they are cheap) & finding matched ones(!) Some info here on JFET matching:

Hope this is of some help.
Hi,
Does anybody have some experience with some of these pedals/company:
<a href="http://www.buildyourownclone.com" target="_blank">http://www.buildyourownclone.com</a>
or their UK distributor:
<a href="http://www.vibe-o-tronic.siliq.net" target="_blank">http://www.vibe-o-tronic.siliq.net</a>
Silent Fly
Hello Silent Fly,
Not used either of the above, but I have built a fair few of my own clones.
The BYOC kits are probably very good, but to me they do a seem bit pricey.
e.g. +250 BYOC kit: £35. An original DOD 250 can easily be picked up on Ebay for that or less!
If you sourced the parts yourself, & made it on veroboard - cost would be no more than £15. Most expensive items would be the box & footswitch. Diagram here:
http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/v/DRAGON...RO_001.gif.html
Excellent forum, with diagrams & advice here
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/
BYOC's own forum is also very good
http://board.buildyourownclone.com/
If you're reasonably competent with a soldering iron, a lot of effects are a piece of p*ss to make & cost relatively peanuts. A good way to spend those long cold winter nights!
What effect do you fancy building? -
You can't go wrong with Alesis SR-16, always loads on ebay.
I would also recommend Zoom 2-3-4, for it's wide variety of sounds & ease of programming.
My own favourite is Alesis HR-16, nice old school sounds. Very easy to programme as well.
Can of worms
I recently watched some Bass solo vid's on Youtube and I was suprised by how much they did NOT interest me.I feel like a traitor to bass players everywhere.I found I did'nt get off on extra fast shredding,or two hand taps.Slap by Wooten, sorry, not for me.I'm more impressed by a good groove or run in a song.I know that I will get some flak for this but I feel its time to come clean;to me bass is supportive.
I couldn't agree more with you too -_-
Would be interesting to see a poll on which camp, most bassists sit; Jaco or Macca, Mani or Flea.....etc?
