Moping at home after eye surgery last Saturday. Right retina tore & detached, so a surgeon sucked out all the goo, spot-welded the tears with a laser, then pumped up my eye with hexafluoroethane, a greenhouse gas. So that’s me on one eye for the next few weeks at least. I’ve even got the eyepatch. (Arrrr.)

  my dad had something similar about 10 years ago. He had bubbles of gas in the eye to push the retina back into place and had to lie on his front for two weeks. You're lucky to be able to look a screen : )

  I’ve got the bubble of hexafluoroethane, and have to do some “posturing” including hours on my face, but not as much of that due to the locations of the tears in my retina. I had them along the edges, while a detachment in the centre is harder to flatten and would explain having to spend weeks face down.
