1. apart from all precisions- anything in monochrome, especially;

    black Tbirds with white plates

black rickenbackers with either white or black plates as above

maybe a black and white stingray

white jazz with black or maybe tort plate

basically anything that may have been designed by a penguin...

  2.
mmm...

mine says MIA... well i like that because its better than MIM, and it makes me feel better.

    just being honest :)
yeah i'll admit to that
that's not to detract from the intrinsic differences between the two- some may prefer the MIM

for me; my precision is the best bass i've ever owned- but i've never actually played an MIM version so i can't KNOW it's any better, even though i'd pretty much swear it blind

  3. i can only answer this divided up into catagories-

fun basslines - probably jamiroquai now but given a time machine - 5 (slam dunk da funk)

sheer awesomity - foo fighters or dizzee rascal

girl pop - katy perry, rihanna or lady gaga are all fine choices; but i'd go for the saturdays- there's 5 saturdays to 1 of me and they're british

    because i'm G - Xzibit

  4.
Ah thanks!
My main priority is the head, which I've reserved 500 euros (around 435 pounds)
The cab will be a bought at a later time but I already wanting to research it.
And how about the gain/drive when u crack the volume up and the drive/gain at a low volume (i.e. for in house)
for me the head is great but to each there own.
it's also worth saying that most bass cabs are of 4x10 dimensions, but as its an old JCM the width is that of a 4x12 cab- so the head will be wider than the cab so dont go too skinny with what you put under it.

to be honest i've never had the chance to use explore it properly by myself at the highest volume/gain due to the sheer noise it can make, hence the wanting a hotplate and if you're living on the 3rd floor then the neighbours/whoever's below you won't appreciate the volumes you'll need to get the pure valve drive. i never took mine to my little student apartments because of the size/weight/volume/value. maybe something hybrid would serve you better so you can crank the valves at lower volumes (and lower weight!) BUT i would still whole heartedly recommend it- it's not the most practical but the sound makes it worth it.

  5. yes yes

i have one- with the matching 4x10B cab. it is immense and i'm always amazed at the range of styles that it can pull off. it's a great sounding amp for sure but as with all old valve amps- it's not light, and the controls are pretty basic.

and it's also worth mentioning that there will be- obviously depending on your exact setup- surplus headroom most of the time. i'm currently eying up a hot plate to allow me to really use the valves.

is the 500 euros a budget for a cab or for the whole rig?

  6. i think being a few hundred miles away from all my gear for months/weeks at a time [s]is helping[/s] has helped me to curb the GAS recently, but now the end is in sight i've started to peruse the for sale sections quite regularly.

my pedal board is bigger than my pedal collection and one can never have too many FX options, so that's not reeeaaaaly GAS

and i really neeeed a new small amp that can fit in my little student room, so that doesn't count either

but at least bass-wise im GAS free- unless someone has a black gibson tbird studio IV...

i'm going to a poor mans grave, but i'm taking some expensive basses with me :)

  7.
Plus they both can give you GAS.
hahaha. true

i forgot to mention also- that there's some kind of difference between say lower priced mexican beans, imported japanese beans and big fat american beans, but i'll leave that for someone with a more eclectic palette...

i'd agree that fenders are a very common go-to brand of basses- but surely that largely comes from years of people choosing their instruments on actual merit rather than lack of alternatives or ignorance.

and sure, they're common as muck, but as was just said above- they are bloody good

and fake heinz beans?! (the actual beans not fenders)- surely it's better just to buy a few cans of the real thing to wall in your regularly consumed tesco beans. that's one appetising hiding place, come to think of it they could be used to wall in just about any little kitchen related secret. they'd never know...

  8. can't beat a solid fender precision in my mind- but that's just me

the way i see it (apologies if a similar food related reference has been made before) it's like baked beans

fenders ( i mainly mean Pbasses here but i guess this applies to jazz basses too) are like the heinz baked beans, consistent, reliable widely available good middle of the range beans. there will always be gourmet waitrose beans that some people can really appreciate the difference of, and there will always be cheap and cheerful no frills beans that rarely taste quite as good, and then there will always be some weird spin off like branston beans which for the life of me i dont understand why people put in their mouths...

but they all lack the secret ingredient that makes one brand of beans stand out.

and like beans- it's all just a matter of taste

little more beanchat than basschat but there you go... :)

  9. You know how they say if you name something you get attatched? well it's true so i'd have to save Leo; my S-1 precision- I know they're hardly a "classic" but he's my favourite (they also say you shouldn't choose favourites but balls to that) :)

  10. Hi all

ive read through the recent compressor threads but they arent about what i need.

im looking at the rack mount 2 in one compressors/limiter/gate things, once to compress before the preamp to give me a more consistant distortion, and the other time for post pre amp to even out the sound if im using the different levels of drive/volume, and id like to switch each one on and off easily (preferably footswitchable)

at the moment the 3 im considering are

    the TC C-300 http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/c-300/69211

    the Alesis 3630 http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/alesis-3630/1580

    and the dbx 266XL http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/266-xl/1625

would appreciate any experience/guidance with these, or if there are any other options that i should consider

    thanks
