An active pickup with traditional controls might be a simple solution, I had SD Lightnin Rods in my old fretless Warmoth Jazz (wired up as standard V/V/T) and they were basically a kind of J bass but more of it solution, more thud on the neck pickup, more body to the bridge and a bit more lively overall. Like a halfway house between a fully passive bass and one with a preamp.
The P pickup version is the APB-2 and the more modern voiced version is the Pro Active P-bass.

If you want something cheap to tide you over until the East becomes available then an Artec SE2a works fine if you omit the balance pot.

The best things about the silent stage (apart from your ears not ringing after the gig) is the ease of set-up & pack-down, No lugging bass rigs back to the car, & more room on stage (very handy at pub gigs?)..
Yeah and this.

What I use now:
Bass > Fishman Platinum Pro EQ > Behringer XR18 > Behringer P2 > KZ ZS10
Basically using the cheapo IEM setup recommended on here, no complaints and astonishingly cheap. The only variable is what preamp you want to use if you want bass specific features at your feet rather than just using a DI box - definitely check the Fishman out if you don't need drive.

Until this thread I never knew people thought USA Fenders were an aspirational top of the line instrument.
Funny old world.

He's starting to churn them out. I'm waiting for the short story depicting what exactly went on on that night in Langney/Langley. It was never ascertained whether he bought a pizza from the pizza place that night. If he did, what toppings did he choose? Probably baloney.
He ordered a regular pepperoni, however when he got home he swapped out half of the meat for those little yellow cubes you find in urinals. Then he removed some of the slices and reinstalled them backwards, accidentally scraping the cheese off as his chisel slipped halfway through (they make quite effective pizza slicers) however this has been replaced with mustard. Still not happy at the original state of the pizza he upturned the box, picked the slices off the floor and reinstalled them in an old cat litter tray.
It's actually still listed on eBay all these years later for the bargain price of £367 with £18.50 shipping.

He's sold barely anything recently, still has the same instruments as the last time I looked.
It's a shame the threads have been deleted as there was some useful information on them, the bass body in the OP is from a Tiger cheapy that used to float around on Amazon which MDP picked up for a pittance. A bit of a shame it's ended up in his hands as there aren't many options for bitsa Fortress-alike parts. The entire bass with an amp/strap/lead etc went for £112 delivered brand new btw.
As usual he's ruined it and whacked a silly price on it.

If anybody does want a guitar scale acoustic bass then these are discontinued and are at a discounted price:
I have one, it's brilliant and has been my most regularly played bass since I bought it. Surprisingly loud and versatile too.

I'm not sure I'd spend £20 on any instrument that has a hinge bolted to it tbh!

Looks like he who shalt not be named has an apprentice. And that apprentice has a serious crack habit:

We originally had a 2.4ghz router for our XR18 but found we had speed issues and disconnects in a lot of places, ended up going with a Huawei 5ghz router which can be picked up for around £20 delivered. Chose that one because it was the most compact one I could find with the least spidery antenna, important for us as it has to fit inside a 3u shallow rack bag with all the other stuff!

^My spares n odds are Elephant Ears...
Very brave comment to make on public forum but I'm not sure what this has to do with bass tuners 😁

Some manufacturers provide spec sheets, Gotoh list the inner hole diameter as 3mm on Res-O-Lite and GB tuners.
Wilkinson seem to provide a datasheet but don't give that measurement which is unfortunate as the WJB750 would be a nice, cost-effective upgrade for these.

Saw this pop up on Facebook before, looks absolutely fantastic.

The JJ's B string sounds fine to me, I tilted the neck pickup slightly away from it and it helped even out the sound but the stock strings are quite flexible and the B string feels a bit 'floppy'. I like the strings on the MB-5 but not so much here so we'll see how new strings behave (planning on DR Sunbeams with a 130 B-string). Quite curious to hear it with the U-Retro preamp.
The JP's B string was a bit more off-balance and adjusting the pickup didn't quite even out things, but I haven't spent much time with it. I've got a set of TI Jazz flats for it and once I put them on I'll try to adjust things well and see how it goes.
Best B string I tried was on a Lakland 5502, not sure how much of that was teh 35" scale or just that the pickups were better designed for the B.
Thanks that's very helpful, I usually use D'addario EXL165-5 on my main bass .
I'm considering swapping out my backup bass for something a bit more like my main bass in terms of pickups and string spacing (JJ and 18mm) so this looks like a good candidate, shame about the neck pickup rout (I hate white scratchplates!) but it isn't a dealbreaker..
Not sure why the P version is passive yet also more expensive though.

They are 18mm. I thought it was 18.5 at first but I have measured it more carefully now.
Nice one thanks, what's the low B like? Watched Lobster's quick demo and it didn't sound great on his.
I like that they do the JJ with a cheap active circuit in there as it gives you an easy upgrade route for a better preamp, I have a spare Artec SE3p knocking around which would turn this into a nice backup bass.

What's the spacing on the 5 string?
-
Try both and see which sounds best, also compare the weight as heavy old combos can be an awkward schlep.
Worth checking the Ashdown has the original drivers in as well going by the state of it and also worth seeing if either is making farting/rasping sounds.

I used the Ikea laptop stand on my old Markbass Club cabs which have a near 45 degree tilt so I wouldn't worry about anything falling off. A lot of the time the angled cab was stacked on top of the other too, still no movement.
I did put the rubber grip mat on the underside of the stand too so it gripped the cab tolex and dampened vibrations.

I've heard great sounding players, terrible ones and everything inbetween regardless of amp choices. Last wedding band I saw (they had just a pair of small Turbosound tops, no sub) the bass player was using a bog standard passive Jazz through a MarkBass AC combo plonked on the floor and he filled the room with it, sounded huge with loads of body and definition.

Looks miles better tbh.

I think that was on eBay a while ago.
Seems like all they've added most of the saved length back on to the rear of the bass, that's probably only a few cm shorter than it was before.

Been looking at one of these in this exact finish, too far away for me though, GLWTS. Great price as well.
