1. Oh yeah, just had a thought, has anyone heard a vocalist actually sing nearly in key during their first live performance? I don't think i've ever seen it happen, maybe it's impossible, and something that only comes from experience. Maybe i'm just playing in and watching the wrong bands :)

That would take the attention off you, but then again, i'm guessing you're the only girl in your band, and will get people staring at you anyway. My girlfriend gets that a lot.

as previously stated, these are def the way to go. only a tenner, and they actually sound pretty good, don't kill the frequency response like foam plugs do.

i'm partially deaf in my left ear and suffer from a mild tinitus -- and trust me, you don't want even that. there is no price you can put on your hearing.
Yup, we all have a pair of these in my band. I make sure I always wear mine when watching other bands and occasionally in rehearsal. Can't be doing with it on stage, but it works fine at the moment as our new favourite trick is playing quietly on stage (to allow a really nice gentle tone to come across during delicate sections) and then let the p.a. do the work when we need mighty mega doom. My ad-hoc tinnitus seems to be much better now that our lead guitarist ain't so loud...

  3.
I'm sure there was a nice 5 string Stingray in the for sale section for £550. Can't go wrong with that :)
Thanks Mike, I take it you mean the sunburst one that's currently on hold owned by Trev? Looks good, would need to change something on it; scratchplate or body, it's a bit clashy at the moment.

  4.
OK, OK... the bass with some friends...
I reckon you could sell this to farmers, not only is it more humane than branding, you could combine it with animal skin treatment and have your own swirly swirly sheep-dip! Imagine turning up to the national farming awards (I presume they exist) with a swirly sheep; it'd win everything under the sun!

  5.
And buy a transit to lug them about in...
HA! I's already gots one...

Might as well start building a proper reggae soundsystem and do gorilla gigs.

  6. Thanks for the advice guys. I have rehearsal tomorrow night, i'm going to use the Jazz for the moment; i'll take your suggestions on board and see how I get on.

Scary thing is that Electric Picnic is less than 2 weeks away and i haven't met any of the band yet!

    ...could be interesting...

  7.
Turned into a total poser for the drone parts, holding my bass up so it feeds back though.
It really shouldn't be any other way...

...you could alway spend time gazing at Statick's eyes thru his hair :)

  8. Err just do both...generally
whatever you do make sure you make eye contact with your audience sometimes! you are playing to paying folk not your shoes or your fretboard
I am most definitely playing for my pedal board, but then again we are kinda shoe-gazey...

  9. My first gig was a regional BOTB heat, playing infront of about 200 people. Was definitely shitting it a bit for that gig. Never had any problems at all after that, and i'm not really an overly extroverted chap. Just enjoy it as much as possible.

Oh, and I totally agree with the whole rehearse it until you can't possibly get it wrong idea mentioned above.

  10.
While I agree with that, the new dub sounds are getting lower. There's a cracking Warwick Streamer 5er in the BC marketplace for £390.
I detune the low E to D on my 4 and that does the trick generally. Pump up the bass, turn off the treble, you should be fine. I wouldn't stress either. In fact I was chatting to the new bassist in ADF recently at one of our gigs and he got a Stingray 4 for his new gig. He also thought my 4 string Jack Bass was pumping serious reggae tone too, so I wouldn't worry too much mate. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, looks like the Streamer is just about to be sold though which is a shame, looks ideal! Strange you should mention the Stingray 4, I've also made enquiries about one of those recently; had a feeling they would be good for the job. As you say, I should be fine, my head has a good level of bottom end; think it's probably all GAS anyway.

  11.
Can't help you with the Reggae I'm afraid, but Atmospheric Post-Rock...? That's my favourite kind! Webiste? Samples...?
Yeah, it's really emotive and good for the soul (and really really pompous)

We don't really use this site for promo that much, but the whole of our last mini-album is at:

    http://www.last.fm/music/Light+of+Words

    Alternatively:

    http://www.myspace.com/lightofwords

Not sure that the tracks on there are completely representative of what we do.

Hopefully new full-length album coming in late Oct/Nov, with all new material. But for now, Thousand Year War, Stop Start, and Hold On Eyes Up are probably our best recorded tunes.

  12. With this post I am breaking my new topic cherry :brow: , hope you can help.

In my mission to become a more prolific and varied bass player, I am about to join an acoustic(ish) reggae/dub act to help them tie up their festival season of gigs, then possibly to play with them on a more permanent basis.

My current band (which I am not intending to leave) is an atmospheric post-rock band (my first pretentious love!), for which I am currently using a Standard Jazz, which really does the trick.

Along with a serious case of GAS, i've been thinking that a 5-string may be better suited for the new dub sounds i'm going to need to make.

Basically, I am looking to you guys & girls for suggestions of suitable 5-strings in the region of £500 - £750 (new or s/h). I was possibly thinking that a DBX 120 subharmonic synthesiser may also do the trick - has anyone got/played one and will it blow my cab?

    Cheers!

    Kieran

  13. Thanks for massively fuelling the GAS guys & girls.

I've had my MIM Fender Jazz for 4 years now, and really never needed anything else; it's reliable, nice to play and sounds great. Recently been thinking about the acquisition of a second bass, maybe a 5 string to give me a few options, will probably end up getting a US Jazz though tbh :)

Nick, if you need somewhere to store your instruments, please consider my door open; i'll even keep them warm for you if you'd like!

  14.
dont think iv ever heard positive comments about the studio, iv heard alot more positives about the epiphone version...
Yeah, i had an Epi Thunderbird in 2003/4, it's good and meaty tone-wise and looks pretty cool too. The neck-dive is possibly even worse than a crappy Epi SG bass I had the misfortune of playing recently.

Wouldn't recommend unless you're going to be playing sat down, but then again if you were going to do that, why the hell would you want the Thunderbird? I cannot comment on the Gib Studio, I would imagine it suffers the same issues.

Was glad to be rid of mine...
