  1. At least give us a price range, i hear the Digitech Bad Monkey is pretty awesome, and you can get that for around £30, (or you could get a Humphrey Mods Badder Bass Monkey from the states), or you can shell out £150-ish and get a Tech21 VTbass.

    I had a black Marshall Guv'nor, tried it for about 15mins then sold it, couldnt get any low-end out of it, did kinda sound like I was playing through a Marshall guitar head tho, also they're discontinued now so they get more expensive all the time, it might be worth trying the new one and adding a clean blend. I reckon the new one could be just as good as the old one, but Tim Commerford used the black one, so thats what alot of bass players go for.

    I also have owned two EHX English Muff'n's, they are awesome, but personally i found they lost too much low/low-mids to be heard in a mix, but it really was like playing through a Marshall tube amp, and sounded fantastic. I've since sold both, but wouldnt say no to a new one, now that i can blend in some clean low-end with my LS2.

  2. I'm on my second (my guitarist couldnt live without one, so i sold my first to him), is a different beast to a traditional octave pedal, the tones are quite thin as opposed to the Boss's fat sub, but if you ever had GAS for a 12-string bass, this will cure it.

    It tracks perfectly to my ears, I play exclusively dropped D tuning with my band. Sometimes the sub-octave sounds a little indistinct, but it will track it, and being polyphonic, it'll take whatever chords you throw at it too. Add some modulation after it (eg: chorus, phaser) and you get incredible organ-like tones from it.

    next practice im gonna plug my old MicroPOG into my new one and see what happens :)

    a few notes tho (based on my experiences):
    the pedal does sound very digital, especially the octave up, but used tastefully it sounds great,
    the digitalness is less noticable on guitar.
    If you want a PHAT sub octave - get a traditional octaver.
    the MicroPOG isnt dynamic to your playing (although no octavers are) and often sounds highly compressed and digital - hence why it should be used tastefully
    It will react to your tone control though.
    I prefer running things AFTER it rather than into it.

  3. Yeah i remember this pedal has been mentioned on TalkBass a few times. By all accounts, its not a bass pedal, which is a real shame. I got the chance to play through my mate's dad's 70's Bassman Ten last night, and it sounds beautiful.

    Boss should have taken into account that in alot of places the Bassman pedal has been marketed as a bass pedal.

Well i've never had a problem with EHX pedals, and the newer built ones seem all tho be very well built, however if you were to pick up an older one (like the older, larger q-tron's ect) you may have problems, EHX are famous for having quality control issues in the past, but i think they've stepped up their game now.

    As for MXR, well they can be funny, I own a MXR blue Box, a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Classic Fuzz and an MXR Blowtorch, and both the Blue Box and the Classic Fuzz are too quiet even at max volume (I even did the C11 mod on the Blue box and i havent really noticed a difference).

    The first blowtorch I owned was bought second hand and had some issues, so i returned it, the current one (also second hand) have never given me any trouble. My First Blue Box was also bought second hand and was just F****D so i had to return it and bought one new.


    The Black Finger may be quite solid (ive owned two Muff'n's in the past), but the power supply doesnt seem so, so even if the pedal lasts, you may find yourself searching for a new power supply if you're not careful. Sometimes i felt with my Muff'n that if i stomped too hard, i might stomp right through the pedal.


    The worst for reliability in my eyes are Ibanez's ToneLok series - the footswitches are terrible, i've owned 3 of their pedals and experienced the same each time, sometimes they switch, sometimes they dont.

    Boss are extremely reliable, however i have a broken Syb-3, which is the first broken Boss pedal ive ever seen/used/owned.

Hook tape/velcro can be bought from loads of places, but its usually best to get the INDUSTRIAL strength type, the adhesive used forms a really strong, solid bond, standard hook tape can have the tendency to come off the board/pedal quite easily, however Industrial strength hook tape is quite a bit more expensive, but once its on, its bloody hard to get off. I've bought pre-cut strips from ebay a few times.

    With the industrial velcro i dont need to worry about the rubber bottoms on boss pedals, its thick and strong enough to just put over the top and it'll hold.


    I velcro everything down on my board: both power supplies and the 4-plug extension lead as well as the pedals, so that in transit i dont have to worry about things becoming disconnected, I also power my amp from the 4-plug on my board, because you can never know how much power is gonna be available at the gig.

  6. well if price is no object, then the Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer will probably do everything you want and more, and you can create and store presets.
    The EHX bass micro synth is also wonderful, but a different beast. great filter section too. the Qtron+ is pretty cool as well and is probably more flexible than the Micro Synth (as you can add other pedals in the fx loop such as distortion, octave, another filter, delay as well as having tonnes of options for the qtron's filter settings) but personally i preferred the Micro Synth - its still funky, but not as stereotypically funky ie bootsy collins, and it works out cheaper/neater than buying a qtron+ AND the subsequent pedals you want for that synth sound.

    only problem i had with the BMS is that i found that i probably could do with about 3, its got alot of awesome sounds in it, hell Juan from the Mars Volta uses it as his main distortion (according to an article in Bass Player)

    Does what it says, its an 18v chorus, with stereo outputs and 2 controls Speed and Chill (rate and depth) turn them both up for a sickening vibrato, but the pedal does subtle too. Runs on 18v power supply or 2x 9v batteries

    [u]MXR Blue Box[/u] - [b]£50 (inc UK postage)[/b]

    Shifts your signal two octaves down and then fuzzes it up for glitchy fun, this isnt a traditionally useable pedal especially for bass, but is pretty synthy and definitely has its charms, there are two controls: Volume and Blend - however blend just seems to control the amount of fuzz rather than dry signal, on minimum, it is just distorted octave down. There is a perceived volume drop, so i tried the C11 mod (very simple) didnt seem to make a difference, but running a fuzz after makes even more craziness and brings it back up to volume. runs on 9v battery or boss-style 9v adaptor

  8. yes, it should just be the VTbass, however it does sound alot better comming out of an amp/speaker, and im not entirely trusting of the TonePort for recording clean - its designed to be used with the models provided, but i tried to get a flat response and thats the best i could get.

    The sound i (try to) get thru a real amp would be JJ Burnel circa Black & White, John Entwistle, Lemmy. Clear, clean overdive rather that actual distortion. I play either a Fender Precision or a Rickenbacker.

    didnt come out quite how i expected, im not really sure if its what you're looking for, the clip was like 20mins, but i edited it down to 5, got rid of most of the 'too-distorted' tones, im playing with my Yamaha Attitude Special with just the p-bass pickup (which is a DiMarzio that i got off ebay), also i switch between playing with a Pick and playing with fingers (I prefer fingers, but i wasnt sure about you and thought you might like a pick, so theres more pick-style stuff)
    I was recording through my Line6 TonePort GX on the 'no-amp' model, but i dont actually know how realistic it is for me to use the line6 stuff at all, however you can be the judge, the first second or two of the clip is just clean p-bass pickup, the tone is all the way up (its always up, theres no tone control).

    ps - if you've got a spare £20-£30 pick up the behringer GTI21 (i think thats what its called) apparently the Bass one is very similar sonically to the Sansamp Bassdriver, so i assume the guitar one is similar to the GT2

    Well, Tech 21 also make the Sansamp GT2, the guitar version of the Bass Driver, which seems to have a bass setting, it doesnt hold that much low end in my experience, but its used by alot of bass players for overdrive, it has popular models of guitar amps. (behringer also do a cheap version of this if it grabs your attention, then once you've tried it and if you like it, you can grab the real thing)

    Tech 21 also sort of split that pedal into 5 separate pedals (kinda) and have the Character Series pedals: Liverpool (VOX), California(mesa-boogie), Blonde (Fender), British(Marshall) and VTBass (Ampeg)

    if the same is true of the other Character series pedals as the VTBass, they dont just emulate one amp, you can actually go through a range of tones with the VTbass.

    I know you said you go through Marshall and HiWatt heads usually, but if you can give me an example of your ideal tone, i dont mind mocking up a VTbass clip, just so you can make a better decision if its not for you, the VTbass will do so much its almost unfair to call it just an Ampeg modeller. I reckon you can get a good hi-gain guitar amp tone, but with enough lowend to make any bass player happy.

    otherwise id suggest using one of the other Character series pedals (the British possibly) and using a clean blend for some low end.

    the Line6 stuff is a good call too

    EHX Micro Synth all the way!! I had the older one and had to sell it to my drummer for cash, but i miss it every day. It kinda works in the same way as if you had a non-polyphonic Micro Pog, a bass Fuzz, a Boss Slow Gear and an awesome envelope filter all in one box, rather than some digital 'magic' like the Akai Deep Impact, so there are some sounds you can do, and some you cant. But its pretty unique. Hell i wanted 4 of them just to get some of my favourite settings at my feet without having to change settings on the pedal.

    I also have or have owned the Ibanez Synth Bass pedal (another glorified envelope filter) and the Boss Syb3 and Syb5, both the boss pedals can make some cool sounds, but kinda suck when it comes to tracking.

    I've had GAS for a XO BMS for a while, and in fact its my anniversary in a week and I was in the same situation as you, but I opted for my girl to get me MicroPOG coz I had to sell my old one to my Guitarist coz he fell in love with it.

I have a Caitlinbread HyperPak that i just got off a TalkBass Member, but i've some great stuff about the Cream Pie, I ended up paying about £70 for it (it was a part exchange for my Germanium B:assmaster with expression pedal) which is almost whay you're asking, but im offering some cash too.
