"I believe in Farther christmas" -- Greg Lake --- Musical inspiration by Prokofiev & Sinfeild's lyrics are as poignant today as they ever were.
Lennon's "merry xmas (war is over)" does the job also.

Just watched it on iplayer I thought it was great --- Now gassing for a 12 string (1 course) bass!!

Has anyone tried or got the line 6 JM4? it seems to have some good features & extras and it has recently come down to the price of the Boss & Digitech --- Not sure of the quality & sound though.

It is a great book. I am one of those who have lost the cassettes over the years. So I will probably get the new version when the misses isn't looking
any strings over 15 quid, a complete con
* Ampeg bass gear (three tone settings rock, rock and sh*te)
* gay basses like jaydee, status wal ect
* most high end bass cabs, you can have one built just as good for less than half the price
* Six string basses, for god sake get a guitar
* plectrum bass playing, clunk click clunk
* Rickenbackers, the worst sounding basses ever invented

I have a couple of six string stati, my life partner is a Jaydee (see what I did there!), I love Rickenbackers & really enjoy (when appropriate) playing with a pick.
I don't suppose we will be going on a date!
But can you just help me lift my Bergantino into the car?
I come from the age of vinyl, like the author of that article -- when you went into town on Saturday afternoon with your few quid and scoured the record shops, coming home with 2,3, maybe 4 carefully selected albums. You put on an album, you listened to the whole thing, all the way through, carefully. Listened again. And again, if it really grabbed you. And again, if it was an instant classic. Back then I think I probably knew every lyric to every song on every album I owned, because music was very definitely finite and so we listened more carefully. Perhaps we even treasured it more?
+1 to that -- And you got a 12" piece of art to go with it...
... and the girl behind the counter at RE-cords in Burton-on-Trent was gorgeous...
Yeah I'm old too!

£9.99 a month they have got to be kidding!! Spend 79p on iTunes
I agree, I loved his more melodic stuff, in fact I'm inclined to download an album now to listen to while I get some Uni work done today. My ex ended up with the vinyl, many moons ago.
So what should it be? Running in the Family? In pursuit of Accidents?
You could influence my decision here guys
The self titled Level 42 album (that spurred this thread) is a must for any music collection (even for those that "don't like Level 42"!) cool bass, throbbing Moog it's like Return to Forever with songs!
Brendan -
I agree with all of the above (and I won't tell you how we used to power up domestic equipment that didn't have a lead!!!) apart from the get it replaced bit. I would decommission the unit (it is not as if it's an old AC30 or Marshall).
If it's been standing in a cupboard you don't need it and H&H weren't "cool" even when the Floyd used them at Pompeii !
Bin it save yourself the grief!

Thanks Pete for rediscovering this gem. I have coped my 79p & downloaded it from iTunes. The bass line has got to be a synth there is an extended chord & glissando near the end that must be keyboard.
As someone said earlier Stevie Wonder was using synths in early 1970 here is a youtube clip of Stevie & TONTO (Clicky) --- Hippies gone Funky!!! Now I got to get me one of them!!!
Haha, beat me to it, but +1 to the above.
In one of the bands I was in, back in the 70's, our keyboard player had one of the staple combination set-ups of the time: a Wurlitzer electric piano (later a Fender Rhodes) plus a Hohner D6 Clavinet. (I loved that sound). He then added one of the (then) new Korg synths. Can't remember the model but it was only monophonic. Not bad for solo's anyway. He 'upgraded' to a Moog.
Them were the day hey? Looking at your avatar I guess you like me also love the sound of the Melotron?
I would love to work in a band with someone with one of those, but would hate to help them carry it!!
I've always wondered how this amazing bass sound was achieved. Is it a synth? Surely they weren't using bass synths on record then...or am I wrong?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubd2uUPT5ww
Most of the sounds were generated with one of these Clavinet Probably the bass line is tic/tak of Clav & real bass? (I can't hear it properly at moment I am on laptop speakers).

I know how great this bass will be as I have it's 6 string bigger brother (same colour but black hardware).
They are fantastic -- Have a Bump
Foxton's the reason I first played bass. I love his stuff - always lots going on, but most importantly, the bassline always fitted the song. Scrimped and saved when I was a kid to buy a jetglo Ric like the one he used on the Going Underground video. I can remember being horrified that I actually didn't sound exactly like him when I plugged it in, too
Having been a fan since I was a kid, I think I can play *most* of his basslines.
To add to the list of more obscure tracks with nice bass lines above: -
All Mod Cons
David Watts
Mr Clean
In the Crowd
Butterfly Collector
The Planner's Dream Goes Wrong
To be honest, it's hard to find a Jam album without a couple of corking bass lines on!
Mark.
Yep same here Bruce was my original personal development
The Bass lines on such as:
All Mod Cons
Fly
Butterfly Collector
Funeral Pyre, Etc, Etc
Would be great in any genera -- Listen to the live at the BBC stuff, when he steps back from his vocal mic & it picks up the spiting sounds of his Marshall stack, mixed with the close miked cab -- Sounds phenomenal.
Bring back the late 70's!!! (I feel old now!!!)
Then I went to Rig of Doom version 2:
That was an Ampeg SVT BSP for the clean lows, and a Pod Pro XT for the Highs and FX - used each side of the Yamaha poweramp into Harke Pro 2200 2x12 cabs.
Then I started to blend 4 tones, so I could have frequency specific drive. Dear god it was MASSIVE.
Wow it looks massive & cool. There are two pods aren't there? (one guitar one bass) did you blend them or run separate pick-ups amps?
Have fun building your new one (and can you bring it round for the morons next door to me (I don't have neighbours) to hear?
