  1. I bought a bass from them a few years back and would recommend them, had a play on a few others while there and the shop is full of really nice MIJ gear - it's like Aladdin's cave! The bass was also really nicely setup, it probably had the lowest action I've ever had on a bass.

The PB70's are really nice, the necks are superb and they sound great. I'll keep an eye out for the new bass day thread 😃

  2. Ohhhh, I didn't think about Etsy for guitar bits - cheers for that! That's pretty close, but maybe a touch too light. I'll email the seller to see if the colour is accurate.

It's to go on a Pelham blue jack casady, it might be easier to find top hats that match that chicken head as they seem to be available in limited colours.

  3. Nice! You're now an owner of what is officially the coolest looking bass or guitar on the planet!

You've summed them up pretty perfectly when you say they're fun and easy to play, I go through phases of thinking about selling mine, then pick it up and instantly change my mind. They're just so light and easy to get around.

Add that fuzz in there too, it's almost like they're designed to be played dirty.

  4. I haven't got one yet and I've just had loads on that puts me in 2 minds about learning - I have a new baby on the way in a couple of weeks, so won't have that much time for  and I'm also wondering if it's better to just spend more time playing the bass rather than learning a new instrument.

Then I think learning the piano will make me a better musician, so I start looking again.

The Recital Pro I was looking at was sold by the time I was back from my break and I've been out bid on a couple of Yamaha P45's recently. I think the Yammy is the way to go though so I'm still keeping an eye out.

I said I would prefer local gigs to ones that involved too much travelling. He interpreted this as an insult to him - how I don’t know, cos he never got us a single gig anywhere! Maybe I am just not ambitious enough…

We do have other options but this would be the easy one. The singer likes him cos they are both blues purists, which old strengthen his position. Band politics!

Drummers, eh? I think as long as the whole band have a chat together and agree on a catchment area for gigs then he likely won't bugger off again.

If there are other options though I'd base it on personality and who I'd rather hang out with over actual ability, unless this bloke is noticeably better than everyone.

  6. If he's a good drummer and everyone gets on with him then I'd probably have him back. It kinda depends a bit around his initial decision to quit too. He's admitted he made a mistake, but was there any specific reason he left in the first place? If there was and it's still an issue (eg. Doesn't like the set, too many/not enough gigs, doesn't get on with everyone) then he'll likely end up leaving again unless something changes.

Life's too short to be holding grudges though, so I wouldn't say no just because he left once.

If you don't have him back, what are your other options? That's another one to think about.

I went with a jazz neck, only because I have a couple of P’s with chunky necks and jazz necks with rolled edges feel really comfy for me.

You're not wrong, mine is a J neck too and it's lovely. Enjoy your new toy, it looks great and I'm sure it plays even better!

It seems that a lot of people seems to be of the assumption that technical playing is the opposite negation of serving the song or soulful playing, which is just nonsense.

Of course it can be, but so can just turning out root notes, or any other type/style of playing for that matter, but it all depends on the context.

From what many people are writing here it sounds like some of you are automatically dismissing everything as soon as it gets a bit too technical as bad, without actually listening.

    Context, context people.

Also, do some people have an aversion against solo pieces, or is it just bass solo pieces, if then why is this, and if not, how can a solo piece serve the song, it is the song?

Also I love the sound of bass as an instrument, one of the main reasons why i chose it as my main instrument.

Why chose it as your main instrument of choice, if you don't like the sound of it?

I enjoy solo's and technical playing, I just tend not to enjoy them if that's all there is to a song. A lot of solo songs I just find boring, lacking melody and a bit pretentious - albeit I can listen in awe and appreciate the skill and talent that goes into composing and playing the piece. On the flip side, I completely agree about root notes too, there's a place for it every now and again, but it can be dull to listen to. Adam Clayton is a prime example of this for me. I've heard people say that his bass lines drive U2 songs, but they're just boring to me.

  9. It sounds like I'm the same as a lot of comments here. It's not that I don't get certain players it's more that I don't enjoy soloing virtuosic music, and that can be said for any instrument, not just bass. I'd rather listen to a song I like that has 7 notes played tastefully and contributes to the song, rather than a 4 minute solo piece that I just don't connect with.
